INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE HOW MANY IB MYP SCHOOLS ARE IN THE WORLD? 1

HOW IS IB MYP GROWING? HOW IS IB MYP GROWING? 2

LETS LOOK AT THE IB MISSION STATEMENT WHAT ARE THE KEY PHRASES? WHAT WOULD YOU HIGHLIGHT TO PARAPHRASE THIS INFORMATION? The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. HOW DO YOU DEMONSTRATE THESE KEY TERMS AT COASTAL? WHAT ARE THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE IB PROGRAM? Global Learners- IB programmes increase understanding of languages and cultures, and explore globally significant ideas and issues (IBO.org). Foreign Language- All students have the opportunity to take two languages Community and Service- Each homeroom has just planned activities for their grade level to participate in Interdisciplinary- Lessons are planned to make connections in other classes and connections to the world Student Centered Learning- The IB program is a rigorous curriculum designed to develop lifelong learners and students prepared for their future How could you explain the program to an outsider? 3

IB Curriculum Model What is in the center of this model? What surrounds the student? How many subjects are involved? What is in the outer ring? Why is this set up in rings? AS MYP LEARNERS, YOU ARE AWARE OF HOW YOU LEARN BEST 4

AS MYP LEARNERS, YOU ARE AWARE OF HOW YOU LEARN BEST THE WAYS YOU LEARN ARE CALLED APPROACHES TO LEARNING 5

WHAT ARE THE GLOBAL CONTEXTS? Last year, you may remember the Areas of Interaction. Global Contexts are similar in that they provide a theme or lens through which to learn a lesson. Identities and relationships Orientation in time and space Personal and cultural expression Scientific and technical innovation Globalization and sustainability Fairness and development GLOBAL CONTEXTS FURTHER DEVELOP GLOBAL LEARNING FROM PYP TRANSDISCIPLINARY THEMES 6

IDENTITIES AND RELATIONSHIPS Who am I? Who are we? identity; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures; what it means to be human. ORIENTATION IN SPACE AND TIME What is the meaning of when and where? personal histories; homes and journeys; turning points in humankind; discoveries; explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between, and the interconnectedness of, individuals and civilizations, from personal, local and global perspectives. 7

PERSONAL AND CULTURAL EXPRESSION What is the nature and purpose of creative expression? the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic. SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL INNOVATION How do we understand the worlds in which we live? the natural world and its laws; the interaction between people and the natural world; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on communities and environments; the impact of environments on human activity; how humans adapt environments to their needs. 8

GLOBALIZATION AND SUSTAINABILITY How is everything connected? the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the relationship between local and global processes; how local experiences mediate the global; The opportunities and tensions provided by world interconnectedness; the impact of decision-making on humankind and the environment. FAIRNESS AND DEVELOPMENT What are the consequences of our common humanity? rights and responsibilities; the relationship between communities; sharing finite resources with other people and with other living things; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution. 9

Identities and relationships Orientation in time and space Personal and cultural expression Scientific and technical innovation Globalization and sustainability Fairness and development How do you use the areas of interaction or global contexts in your classes? THE LEARNER PROFILE 10

IB SITE VISIT What is it? Teachers from other schools come to evaluate the job we are doing. They give us commendations (good job!) and recommendations (how to improve). Last year, we did student surveys to help see what you felt, and we have worked to improve some of those items. When is it? The second week in December What will happen? Members of the team will walk around the school and observe in classes, just like Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Jones do now. The team will also meet with students, teachers, principals, and even parents. They may talk to you in class or in the halls about Coastal. What might they ask you? What is the global context in one of your classes? How do you participate in community and service? What arts class are you taking? What is the best part of being at Coastal? Do you plan on going to IB at Johnson? Do your teachers use rubrics to give you feedback? 11
