THE UWI GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS TO THE UWI-12+1 What are the UWI-12+1 Scholarships? T he UWI-12+1 Scholarships are sponsored by The University of the West Indies (UWI) and are available to nationals of the following countries: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines. One Scholarship tenable at the UWI is awarded to a highly capable individual from each UWI-12+1 territory. The Scholarships are administered by the Office of Graduate Studies in the School for Graduate Studies and Research at the Regional Headquarters of the UWI. Applications are hereby invited from UWI-12+1 nationals to pursue PhD programmes at The University of the West Indies. The course of study should be in an area deemed to be a priority research area by your home country. The scholarship is aimed at developing skills and knowledge of eligible citizens who will help to drive change and contribute to national development. Applications for the academic year, which begins at the end of August each year, should normally be submitted by March 31 of that year.
GUIDELINES FOR UWI GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS TO UWI-12+1* Eligibility for & Tenure of Awards i) Applicants should be holders of a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree, or the equivalent, from a recognized/ approved institution. ii) The UWI scholarship covers tuition fees for four (4) years and a stipend of US$10,000.00 per year for two (2) years. This stipend will be disbursed directly to the student on a half-yearly basis, on receipt of favourable progress reports from your research supervisor. How to Apply i) Before you apply, please see information about The UWI at our website. Information on our four (4) campuses is also available from that page. ii) You should apply online to read for your programme of choice at the relevant campus of The University of the West Indies. You will receive a system-generated email message acknowledging receipt of your application. iii) Print the acknowledgement of receipt notice and submit this along with a letter describing your interest in the chosen field of study, your long term career goals, and highlighting any other relevant information you would like the Committee to consider in awarding the scholarship, to: - The Scholarship Committee School for Graduate Studies & Research, The University of the West Indies, Regional Headquarters, Hermitage Road, Kingston 7, Jamaica. GUIDELINES FOR UWI GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS TO UWI-12+1* Terms & Conditions i) The recipient must be registered full time, i.e. should not be employed for more than twelve hours per week, and must not be the holder of any other scholarship/ award during the first two (2) years of the award. ii) Recipients of the UWI scholarship should normally be less than 40 years old. iii) After graduation, the recipient is expected to work in the Caribbean for a period stipulated by the Government of the home country. iv) Recipients who withdraw from the programme without good reason and without the approval of the Academic Director (or who fail to complete the programme) will be expected to repay the award. Change in Course of Study A scholar may not change his course of study or transfer his/her registration unless s/he has received approval from the Board for Graduate Studies & Research. Reports on Scholars Progress reports on all graduate scholars shall be submitted by the research supervisor to the Office of Graduate Studies on the relevant campus at the end of each semester (that is, by January 31, and July 15 of each year). Awards may be suspended or withdrawn, if reports are unsatisfactory.
