ABOUT US What is ROP? The Eden Area Reional Occupational Proram (ROP) is a collee-career-trainin proram offered by Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro and San Lorenzo School Districts. ROP offers hands-on learnin classes and opportunities for hih school students to learn somethin new and prepare for the future. In partnership with local school districts and the business community, ROP prepares students for collee and careers by providin marketable skills and work ethics to build and keep a career. Are Hih School & Collee Credits Available? Yes! All classes offer hih school credits. Some classes may fulfill raduation requirements in math or science too. Additionally, students can earn collee credits towards a certificate or deree proram from the community collees in most ROP. prorams, also referred to as articulations. Why Take ROP? Experience is the reatest teacher. All ROP. courses ive students the hands-on experience in each industry to help start career plans and et the skills that will last for a lifetime. What Is The Cost? ROP is free to hih school students. What About Transportation? Free bus transportation is available for hih school students enrolled in an ROP course at the hayward center. Buses transport students to and from their home hih school to our center. (Refer to the 201-19 bus schedule) Are There Any Other Costs? Some of our courses have additional costs for uniforms, protective equipment, or medical clearances. This information is provided at orientation and on the first day of class. Is Business Involved? Over three hundred local employers participate on ROP advisory committees to keep trainin current with industry standards. Many classes offer non-paid internships or on-the-job trainin at businesses and industry sites throuhout the county. Employers who need hihly skilled, motived employees hire R.O.P. raduates! How Do I Reister for R.O.P. Classes? Students that are interested in reisterin for ROP classes are encouraed to make an appointment with their hih school counselor or visit the career center on their hih school campus. Students may also visit our website www.edenrop.or What Is An Articulation? Articulation (Community Collee Credit) is defined as a planned process linkin two or more education systems to assist students in makin a smooth transition from the secondary level of occupational or academic trainin to the two-year and four-year post secondary level without experiencin a delay of duplication of learnin. Articulation is envisioned as a continuum of skills which may lead to advanced placement and students are able to receive collee credit for articulated hih school classes (See paes 28 and 29). What Is A Community Classroom? A community classroom (work-site learnin also known as an internship) is an instructional methodoloy that supplements classroom instruction. It allows a student to expand on their classroom instruction at a job site in a non-paid position. 4

Students will explore the wonderful world of desin while learnin basin principles and techniques usin Adobe Creative Suite software (Illustrator, InDesin, Photoshop and Dreamweaver). This course is desined to expose students to several fast-rowin industries and helps them take advantae of the opportunities that exist within each one. Students will develop the ability to think critically, work in teams, and produce professional-quality work while buildin the confidence needed to pursue further education. CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY I, II BUILDING TRADES AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY SECTOR Credit Up to 40 a year Prepares students in a career pathway to earn an Associates in Science deree in Industrial Technoloy or a Certificate of Achievement in Industrial Electronic Technoloy at Collee. Associates in Science Deree in Machine Tool Technoloy at Collee. Construction Technoloy is a course in fundamental carpentry skills that includes project plannin, blue-print readin, concrete structures, framin, roofin, interior/exterior finishes, basic plumbin/electrical installations, remodelin and solar/reen technoloy applications available throuhout the construction process. The curriculum is delivered in a real world construction environment where students are exposed to the work ethics and professional behavior expected of all construction industry participants. As crew members, students utilize critical thinkin, leadership, and effective communication as they plan, execute, and evaluate different scale construction projects. Students are routinely exposed to construction apprenticeship/trainin opportunities and become familiar with construction career pathways in both field positions (carpenter, electrician, etc.) and professional positions (architect, enineer, etc.). Students are made aware of the pride and rapid upward mobility within the construction industry continent on their personal motivation and career commitment. 9

CAREERS IN EDUCATION I, II EDUCATION, CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND FAMILY SERVICES INDUSTRY SECTOR (Psycholoy of Careers In Education) Credit up to 40 per year Prepares students in a career pathway to earn an Associates in Arts/Science in Early Childhood Development or an Associates in Arts Deree in Early Childhood Intervention at Collee. Associates in Arts in Psycholoy BA in Early Childhood Education This course meets UC/CSU requirements for collee prep elective () credit. Community collee credit available:, Las Positas, and Mission Collee The Careers in Education proram provides instruction, trainin and community experience for child care professionals in the preschool and elementary levels. This course ives students the opportunity to be exposed to workin in the field of education. Students learn how to support children s development mentally, physically, socially and emotionally. Instruction is reinforced throuh trainin in community field sites such as school-ae prorams, child care centers, preschool prorams and elementary schools where ROP students are responsible for plannin and supervisin educational activities for children from infancy to preadolescence. Careers in Education students also participate in collee tours, field trips and other community events. 10

CYBERSECURITY/PROGRAMMING ENGINEERING AND DESIGN INDUSTRY SECTOR Meets UC requirement Collee and Collee credit available San Lorenzo Hih School- math credit Hayward USD (Seniors Only): math or science credit CISCO Certification- A+, Security, Routin and Switchin As part of the CISCO Networkin Academy, students learn how to protect personal data and privacy online and in social media, and why more and more IT jobs require cybersecurity awareness and understandin. The course introduces students to characteristics of cybercrime, security principles, technoloies, and procedures to defend networks. Throuh interactive, multimedia content, lab activities, and multi-industry case studies, students build technical and professional skills to pursue careers in cybersecurity. Additionally, the course covers IT Essentials with hands on labs that provide practical experience to prepare students for enterprise networkin and troubleshootin. 11

DENTAL ASSISTING, REGISTERED DENTAL ASSISTING HEALTH SCIENCE AND MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY SECTOR Credit up to 40 per year Reconized by the Department of Education as a Model Proram Meets the raduation requirements for the followin districts: San Leandro Unified School District San Lorenzo Unified School District Health and Safety Hayward Unified School District, San Leandro Unified School District, San Lorenzo Unified School District Science Prepares students in a career pathway to earn an Associates in Arts Deree in Dental Hyiene at Collee The Dental Assistin proram prepares student for employment as a dental chair side assistant. Upon raduation students will earn a completion certificate, infection control certification and a license to take dental x-rays in California. Students are also eliible to sit for the National Entry Level Dental Assistant (NELDA) issued by the Dental Assistin National Board (DANB). Students also have the opportunity to intern in a dental office in our community, where they can put into practice those skills learned in the classroom and be mentored by dental professionals. This is a challenin and fast paced class. Students must be able to work independently, as well as collaborate with other students. Some of the instructional areas covered are dental chartin and terminoloy, infection control and sterilization, hazardous waste manaement, chair side procedures, manipulation of dental materials, dental radioraphy, anatomy and physioloy and dental office procedures. Upon completion of this course, students have the option of advancin to the Reistered Dental Assistin course. Graduates of the Reistered Dental Assistin course are immediately eliible to take the State Board examination to become a Reistered Dental Assistant (RDA). For any student interested in the dental profession, this is a wonderful place to start. Students ain knowlede of the dental career ladder and the many career options available in dentistry. 12

This proram covers administrative procedures and clinical procedures frequently performed by an entry level healthcare professional. First semester consists of classroom instruction in Medical Terminoloy, Anatomy and Physioloy, Clinical Skills, Professionalism and Career Preparation. Second semester provides on-site trainin in community medical facilities as well as classroom instruction in administrative procedures, minor surery, pharmacoloy, first aid and CPR as well as introduction to billin and codin. Students participatin in this proram are expected to be professionally and academically prepared to successfully complete an internship at a near by medical facility. Students who successfully complete both years in the Medical Careers proram may be eliible to sit for the administrative and basic portions of the CCBMA examination. 1

CULINARY SCIENCE HOSPITALITY, TOURISM AND RECREATION INDUSTRY SECTOR Credit up to 40 per year This course meets UC/CSU requirements for Collee Prep Elective () credit. Community collee credit available: Mission Collee Culinary Science is desined to ive students the theory and hands-on experience in food preparation, hospitality, and restaurant manaement. The course develops industry competencies eared towards accreditation set by the California Restaurant Association and the American Culinary Federation. Culinary Science provides unique opportunities to work with local chefs and participate in a number of caterin events. Students learn the importance of health, safety and sanitation as they earn their Serv-Safe certification. In our two year course, students learn manaement and communication skills, and cookin techniques such as rillin, sautéin, braisin and bakin. Also, students learn how to prepare soups, appetizers, main courses, side dishes, breads and pastries. Students develop knife skills and knowlede in meat and veetable classification. The ROP has its own workin oranic arden, as students have an opportunity to row their own produce and learn farm to table cookin. Class work develops effective communication and problem solvin, includin learnin skills with technoloy and employment literacy. Culinary also reinforces mathematics, science, and Enlish to help students be better prepared for a wide rane of academic and employment opportunities. Students compete and demonstrate their abilities in SkillsUSA competitions. 14

WELDING TECHNOLOGY & METAL FABRICATION MANUFACTURING AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT INDUSTRY SECTOR Credit up to 40 per year Community Collee Credit Available: Collee Prepares students in a career pathway to earn an Associates in Science Deree in Weldin Technoloy or a Certificate of Proficiency in Weldin at Collee. This certificate proram is desined to provide a student with the basic skills needed to obtain entry level employment in the weldin industry. Students will have entry level skills usin power tools, hand tools, drill press and band saw. Entry level blueprint readin welders need ood eyesiht, hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. Students should be able to concentrate on detailed work for lon periods. This course offers entry level skills in safety and operation, equipment maintenance, and equipment setup in the followin processes: Shielded Metal Arc Weldin (SMAW) stick weldin, Gas Metal Arc Weldin (GMAW), MIG weldin, Gas Tunsten Arc Weldin (GTAW), TIG weldin, Weldin, FLUX core weldin, plasma arc cuttin, metal preparation, shieldin ases, and cylinder safety. FIRST RESPONDER (FIRE SCIENCE/EMT) PUBLIC SERVICES INDUSTRY SECTOR Credit up to 40 per year Community Collee Credit Available: Collee Prepares students in a career pathway to earn an Associates Deree in Fire/Science and/or complete the EMT Certification at a community collee. The purpose of this course is to expose the student to the skills and knowlede required of firefihters, EMTs and paramedics, which are necessary to prepare students for further trainin and employment as a first responder. First Responders help to sustain life, reduce pain, minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness and preserve property. Today s professional fire science practitioner must be able to analyze and ethically solve complex issues involvin fire fihtin, dealin with hazardous materials, manaement, budetin, administration and health and safety. This course is desined to ive students information, theory, skills and practice in the chosen trainin area. The core curriculum consists of, in part: medical terminoloy, anatomy and physioloy, leal & ethical standards, safety, infection control, body mechanics, vital sins, death and dyin, nutrition and basic life support and patient assessment. Instruction and certification of Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for infant, children and adults for healthcare providers is provided. Students will also be trained and certified in CERT (Community Emerency Response Team). Characteristics such as honesty, interity, responsibility and leadership will be emphasized. Students are expected to participate in physical aility exercises, drills and marchin and professional dress days (class uniform). 19

AUTOMOTIVE REFINISHING & PAINTING TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY SECTOR Credit up to 40 per year This proram provides students with entry level skills and hands-on trainin in the auto body and paint industry. The course is desined for students to achieve basic to advanced skills in filler repair, metal finishin, metal fabrication, paint preppin, color matchin, paintin, detailin, structural analyst and estimatin. The Auto Refinishin and Paintin proram course exposes students to what is expected of the technician s appearance, manners, work ethics and ability to work with others in a work related industry. The class focuses on usin the latest products and technoloy that are bein introduced to the automotive industry; helpin students have relevant and current real life experience. Students also have the opportunity to compete in SkillsUSA; which is a competition that is juded by professionals in the industry. Students choose to et industry certifications such as I-CAR, PPG and ASE. 20

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY SECTOR Credit up to 40 per year Reconized by the CA Department of Education as a Model Proram Community Collee Credit Available: and Las Positas Collee Prepares students in a career pathway to earn an Associates in Science Deree in Automotive Technoloy, Automotive Technoloy with emphasis in BMW Manufacture Trainin; or a Certificate of Achievement in Automotive Maintenance, Chassis, Drivetrain, Enine Performance Technoloy, Automotive Enine Machinin, or Automotive Technoloy Entrepreneur at Collee. Interested in learnin how a car works and how to make them perform better on the road? This course is accredited by NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) and covers brakes, suspension and steerin, enine performance and electricity/electronics. The class covers safety, industry standards, related automobile operational theory, dianosis and troubleshootin and repair procedures. Students will be exposed to the automotive business and industry and provided with entrylevel job skills. Other course topics are major enine tune-up and performance, function of fuel systems, enine overhaul and electrical repairs. 21

MERCHANDISING OCCUPATIONS MARKETING, SALES AND SERVICE INDUSTRY SECTOR Credit up to 40 per year Pre-requisite: Special Education or Department of Rehabilitation Client This proram provides trainin to students with disabilities throuh exploration of career clusters and learnin both their career interests and strenths to prepare them for career success. Students, while learnin and receivin educational classroom work-based trainin (paid or unpaid), will be assessed and acquire the knowlede and skills employers want. Students will enroll throuh the process of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) placement meetin with the ROP instructor present. Explorin science in action, students build orans and tissues on a skeletal Maniken ; use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration; and take on the roles of biomedical professionals to solve real-world medical cases. SPORTS MARKETING Castro Valley Hih School Grade 10-12 This course is desined to introduce the student to the world of sports and entertainment marketin. Students will learn how to apply the marketin mix (product, place, price and promotion) to the sports and entertainment industries. Students will learn about sponsorships careers, look at advertisin, the media, licensin merchandisin, copyriht laws and create promotional materials. STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY There are three levels of reconition for students ae 16-25: Gold Medal: 250 hours or more Silver Medal: 175 249 hours or more The President s Volunteer Service Award reconizes students who have provided at least 100 hours of service to their community this school year. Alon with the honor of Presidential reconition, recipients receive a personalized certificate, an official medallion and a conratulatory letter from the President of the United States. Last year, our students enaed in a rane of service projects as part of their classes throuh work-based learnin activities. Givin back to others is simply how many of our instructors teach and our students learn. There are many examples of how our students ive back to the community. Some of which include: Students from our Reistered Dental Assistin proram volunteered at East Bay Stand Down by providin dental care to homeless veterans. Students from our Medical Careers proram completed internships at several medical offices and hospitals. Students from our Construction proram built storae sheds and made improvements to a number of ROP prorams, includin Auto, Dental and the Adult Education Office.
