The Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS) program is a significant initiative to attract more of the best qualified international students to Ontario for PhD studies. It is intended to increases the profile and prestige of Ontario universities internationally, and allows institutions to develop additional capacity in their areas of expertise and excellence. Scholarship Value The scholarship value will be to a maximum of $40 000 annually. The scholarship is renewable for a total of four years. The program will be cost-shared between the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (MTCU) and UOIT, where the MTCU provides 2/3 the funding and the university provides 1/3. Minimum Academic Requirements Academic merit is the defining criterion for the selection of OTS recipients by institutions. OTS recipients must have achieved a first-class average of 3.70/4.30, in each of the two years of full-time study prior to awarding of the OTS. Eligible Students In order to be considered for an OTS, students must be: Must meet minimum GPA requirements outlined above Must be an international doctoral student applying for admission to an eligible program Must not currently be studying at an Ontario postsecondary institution at the undergraduate or graduate level Cannot be enrolling in a qualifying or make-up year Must meet English language proficiency requirements at the time of application. Note: OTS applicants without a complete admissions application will not be considered. Must submit a complete application for the OTS In order to maintain eligibility, recipients: Must be an international doctoral student enrolled in an eligible program at an eligible institution and: o Be geographically available and visit campus regularly o Must be a full-time PhD student o Cannot be employed outside the university except by permission of supervisor o If a student becomes a Permanent Resident during their program they remain eligible for continuing the award Cannot hold an OTS concurrently with a scholarship or fellowship from SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, OGS, OGSST Must maintain satisfactory research progress for the duration of this award The award is renewable for up to a total of 4 years subject to academic performance and availability of funding. Renewal beyond the first year requires a minimum GPA of A- in all completed courses.
