Introduction I sense that this year s report is more eagerly awaited than the two previous editions. This comes from a widespread feeling based on our own data, and some anecdotal evidence, that the pattern of university admissions offers has continued to change following the watershed year of 2012, when 9000 tuition fees were introduced in England and Wales. Certainly universities themselves view 2012 that way. But how would the changes affect pupils in HMC Scotland schools? Would this year s data show that it is becoming harder for our pupils to get into Scottish universities and yet strangely, easier to get into some top English ones? I am grateful to the 19 schools who sent me their applicant status reports this year, which has resulted in data on 9903 applications to 149 institutions. This has given me something really substantial to work with and I am confident that the resulting tables are meaningful, giving a true picture of the 2013 admission round. The headline results are somewhat surprising and, I think, reassuring. There is no evidence that it is becoming harder for our pupils to enter Scottish universities. Offer rates at Edinburgh and St Andrews have increased substantially from last year, suggesting that the low admissions there in 2012 could perhaps be considered as a muddled response to the 2012 changes, and therefore atypical. It is in our interest to continue to monitor these two universities carefully in the years ahead. Aberdeen is a different story; alone amongst the more popular Scottish universities offer rates there are lower this year. See Tables 2 and 5b for more detailed analysis of this. The picture at English universities is that many show substantially increased offer rates, but there is a longish list of the most selective where offer rates are largely unchanged. I was asked this year to look at some different aspects of the data and so there is a new section at the end titled Case Studies. In these I look firstly at offer rates broken down by school type, so that there are separate tables for schools offering Highers in S5 and applications based on those results (largely the day schools) and schools offering either A Levels or the IB in the U6 (largely the boarding schools). The results show that on the whole pupils at the latter schools have higher or similar offer rates at both Scottish and English universities. In Case Study 2 I look specifically at Geography at Aberdeen, where again A Level/IB schools receive higher offer rates. In Case Study 3 I look at the pattern of Conditional offers given to pupils in Highers schools by Scottish universities in 2013 and in 2011. There are clear differences in approach between the universities, as we already knew. Sadly for those of us running day schools who were hoping to see more conditional offers in the future to help us keep S6 pupils working hard, these conditional offer rates have hardly changed in the last three years. One other change in this report is that I have not waited for Peter Mason s whole HMC survey to be published before issuing this one. Consequently there is no comparison with RUK schools on offer rates or popularity of universities or courses. I decided that having this report early in the session was more important; you will be able to compare these results with the whole HMC picture once Peter s report arrives. 4 P a g e
