3rd Grade Entering 4th Grade Summer Work Dear Parents and Students, Wow! I can not believe the end is here. Way to go 3rd grade! We have been preparing for 4th grade all year long and it is extremely important to keep those skills up over the summer. Below is some work that should be done in order to keep our skills fresh for 4th grade. Remember that this work is to help you and make sure you are prepared. Also, keeping in mind summer is a time to have fun with friends and family. While doing so, there are many learning opportunities out there, so take advantage. I hope you all have a fantastic summer. I will miss all of you and look forward to seeing you in the fall all grown up. Please expand, bend, or improvise this summer work as you see appropriate for your child. Reading: Students are expected to read just about everyday over the summer adding up to two hours a week. Students should check every day they read allowing themselves a total of 2 weeks off. If you are having trouble finding some grade level appropriate books here is a link I suggest using. www.lexile.com/fab/ff Besides reading everyday and filling in their reading log (be sure to keep track of pages as well), students are to complete one of the three projects that follow. You are to do a.) Book Jacket Book Report with the attached directions, b.) Critical Thinking Bag Book Report - with directions below, or c.) Night / Trip to the Museum - with direction on the back. Whichever assignment you choose will be counted as a quiz grade worth 50 points and you will be presenting it to the class in the first week of school. Critical Thinking Bag Book Report - You need a brown or white paper lunch bag. On the front side you are going to write the title, and author, your name and a drawing from your favorite scene or favorite character. On the back you write a list of the characters and 3 describing words (characteristics) of each character. Below that write a short summary of the book. In the bag, place three to five objects that will help you retell the story and had significance to the story.

A Night / Trip to the Museum In your travels over the summer or while you are right here in DC there is so much you could learn. A few different ideas for this activity might be; visiting a museum or monument in downtown DC, a historic sight, hiking a mountain, day camp, etc. Students are to write on a 5x8 index card or piece of paper the name of museum, sight, or event, where it was, and draw a picture of one or two interesting things about the place visited. On the back side, write a short paragraph (5-8 sentences) about what you did there. Math: Students are to complete the attached worksheets and work on their math skills on the computer three to four times a week. Each day you practice your math facts or do some kind of math skill whether worksheet, math game, or real life application, it all counts. You should be able to check off everyday leaving 2 weeks for vacation at the time of your choice. The attached worksheets focus on three digit multiplication, long division, and other problem solving skills learned in 3rd grade. These skills must be retained in math especially for 4th grade. I also suggest that you get a set of multiplication and division flash cards if you do not already have them. They are on the supply list for 4th grade with Ms. Butler next year so it is better that they are practicing all summer long. In addition to the worksheets students should be practicing their mathematic skills and playing educational math or other academic skill games online. Please use the websites from my OLV webpage to help practice and retain those math skills we have learned this year. You may also want to find some apps or use some other great games you know. All math application practice is great. Your math calendar and/or a math 3rd grade skill review workbook will be worth a 50 point quiz grade. - a great resource for math skill review if you would prefer and want your child to do paper and pencil practice could be Summer Math Skills Sharpener by Tri-C Publications, Inc. It can easily be ordered online. There is also a Step Up to 4th Grade section at the end of the math workbook that could be used on traveling vacations instead of internet games or other work. All work will be collected the first day of 4th grade.

Directions: At the end of the summer, you should be able to sign this form. Please read over the letter to Ms. Butler now, and practice your math facts often. Dear Ms. Butler, I have tried my best to find time to practice my math facts in multiplication and division this summer. I am faster at my facts then I was in third grade, and am now ready to concentrate on more complex math problems. I also have done some work to maintain my skills in telling time, counting money, geometry, and other 3rd grade concepts. I am ready to start fourth grade math! Sincerely, (Student) (Parent)
