Volume 7, Issue 8 AUGUST 2015 EUREKA REVIEW TINTIC SILVER JUBILEE GRAND MARSHALS FOR 2015 MAX & AFTON BERRY Max and Afton Berry made their first home in a small house in the lower part of Eureka, known as Dutch Town 67 years ago. After five years they moved to their present home, where they have lived for 62 years. They love the mountains and quietness of our small town. They love the people and how willing they are to help each other in times of need. When they moved to Eureka, it was a booming little town. You could purchase anything you needed within the community. Some of the thriving business at that time were: The Star Theater, The Bowling Alley, Lloyd Green s Lumber Yard, Nash Barber Shop, Chatterton Barber Shop, Andrew Drugs, Lee s Variety Store, Laird s Market, Randall s IGA Market, Elks Lodge, Dentist, Doctor, a Hotel, a Boardinghouse, Shae s Hat Shop, Lucille s, and Virgin s Restaurants, Gig s Café, Cherry s Malt Shoppe, Silver Club and Toni s, Randall s Service Station and Garage, and the Conoco Service Station. The population was about 3,000 people at that time. Their three children graduated from Tintic High School. The school district has been a great influence on our community. The band has always been very special. Afton worked for Randall s IGA Grocery Store for 18 years and loved serving the people. Max served in the US Navy from 1944-1947. A recent highlight of Max s life was this past May when he was privileged to go on the Utah Honor Flight with his daughter, Kathy to Washington DC and visit many of the monuments, but especially the World War ll Memorial. In the early years Max had a home based TV Repair Service for about 10 years. He worked for 13 years in the mines around Eureka and then worked at Dugway Proving Ground as an electrician, where he retired after 30 years of service. Max and Afton have seen lots of changes take place in Eureka over the years. But one thing that hasn t changed is the people. They are just as helpful and concerned for each other today as they were many years ago. They enjoy the beautiful scenery that greets the eye as they relax in their yard or gaze out their window. They have loved calling Eureka Home
