USA: Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) F-1, M-1 and J-1 visa applicants are required to pay a SEVIS fee before applying for the visa. What is a SEVIS fee? It is a one off fee charged to F, M and J visa applicants to cover the cost of administering the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Who pays the fee? F-1, M-1 and J-1 visa applicants with I-20 or DS-2019 forms issued on or after September 1, 2004 Who does not pay the fee? Derivative F-2, M-2 or J-2 visas applicants, individuals participating in U.S. government sponsored programs with a prefix G-1, G-2, G-3 or G-7 and those with I-20 or DS-2019 forms issued before September 1, 2004. How much is the fee? F-1 and M-1 visa applicants - $200.00 When and how must the fee be paid? The fee is paid to the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement prior to applying for the visa. It cannot be paid at the Embassy or Consulate General. The applicant, the sponsor or a third party can pay the fee. The fee must be processed at least three business days prior to the date of the visa interview. Proof of payment of the fee should be presented at the time the applicant applies for the visa. The fee is nonrefundable. No refunds will be made because a visa has been refused. Refunds will only be made for payments made in error. Students who have been accepted at more than one school may have more than one SEVIS record. As the SEVIS fee is based on the individual applicant, not program, there may be

cases where the applicant has paid the fee against one SEVIS record but is applying for a visa against another. That is acceptable. Applicants taking part in two or more different programs, such as exchange visitors, are required to pay separate SEVIS fees for each program, even if only one visa is issued. How do I know if the fee has been paid on my behalf? You should check with your school or sponsor. The person paying the fee will receive a receipt, either by return mail or electronically. Will I be required to pay the SEVIS fee each time I apply for a visa? No, it is a one off fee charged at the time of the initial visa application. If you reapply for a visa based on the same program then you will not be required to pay a new fee. If you apply for a new visa based on a different program a new fee will be required. The SEVIS fee receipt is valid for twelve months. If your application is refused, you may reapply using this fee receipt provided it is within twelve months of the initial payment. The fee receipt may be used if you are reapplying for the same visa or applying for a new visa for a different program provided the SEVIS fee payment meets the fee required for the different program. Applying For a Visa in London Applicants aged 14 to 79 are required to apply for a visa in person through a prearranged appointment. If you wish to attend a university or other academic institution in the United States, including primary and secondary school, or a language training program you will require an F-1 visa. Foreign students cannot be issued F-1 visas to attend a public elementary school (grades K through 8, approximately ages 5 to 14) or publicly funded adult education programs such as foreign language classes. Those attending public secondary school (grades 9 through 12, approximately ages 14 to 18) are limited to a maximum of 12 months of high school in F-1 status and must show proof that payment has been made for the full, unsubsidized cost of the education before a visa can be processed. Private elementary or secondary schools are not affected by this ruling and provided the school issues you with the form I-20, you may apply for an F-1 visa. M1 If you wish to pursue a course of study which is not principally academic in nature at an established vocational or other recognized nonacademic institution such as a post secondary vocational or business school, you will require an M-1 visa. I20 Entry: The first step is to contact the school or institution for them to issue you with the Form I-20A-B Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status - For Academic or Language Students or I-20M-N, Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (M-1) Student Status Form. Schools and institutions which have received United States government approval to enroll foreign students have the authority to issue these forms. The visa cannot be issued without this form. The holder of a student F-1 or M-1 visa may enter the United States up to 30 days before the designated registration date on the I-20A-B or I-20M. The 30 day limitation does not apply to students returning to resume studies; they may enter the U.S. at any time. The holder of an F-1 visa may remain in the United States for up to 60 days following the completion of the course or practical training. Note: The duration of status of an F-1 student in a publicly funded secondary school cannot exceed an aggregate of 12 months schooling. The holder of an M-1 visa may remain in the United States for the period of time it will take to complete the course of study as indicated on the I-20M plus 30 days, or for one year, whichever is less. If you wish to remain longer, you will be required to apply for an adjustment of status or extension of stay from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services having jurisdiction over your place of residence in the United States. Website: International Students Admissions In addition to the items listed below, international students must meet the general for all graduate and doctoral programs. F-1 Student Visa Most international students coming to the United States will be required to obtain an F-1 Student Visa. The visa is issued by the US Embassy or Consulate in your country of citizenship. You will need the Form I-20A provided by Barry University in order to apply for the student visa. Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20A) The I-20A form allows you to apply for your student visa. In order to obtain the I-20A, you must be admitted to the university. Furthermore, the United States Federal Government requires that international students prove that they have sufficient funds to live and study in the United States. This is not a requirement for admission to Barry University, but is a requirement in order to receive the I-20A, enter the country, and enroll in the University.

If you are admitted to Barry University and need the F-1 Student Visa, you will be required to submit the following documents before the I-20A can be issued. Documents must be dated no earlier than six months before your first day of class. (For example, if your classes begin on August 27, 2012, your documents must be dated February 27, 2012, or later.) You may submit these documents before an admission decision has been made; this may expedite the visa process, but your I-20A cannot be issued until you are admitted. Requirement 1: Financial Statement You may submit either a bank letter or a government / institution letter for your financial statement. Bank Letter You may submit a bank letter addressed to Barry University stating that you or your sponsor have the funds available to pay the total cost associated with attending Barry University for one year (see sample below). The required amount will be included in your admission letter if you are accepted. This amount will be reduced for applicants who are awarded scholarships. As an international student, you should be familiar with the regulations of your government regarding sending money to the United States and you should make arrangements to have the necessary funds available at the designated times of enrollment. Documentary evidence of a means of financial support must be attached to the Certificate of Eligibility (I-20A) when applying for the student visa at the United States Embassy or Consular Office. Sample Bank Letter (On Bank Letterhead â faxes and photocopies will not be accepted ) (Addressed to:).university Division of Enrollment Services Kelley House..Avenue Miami Shores, FL 33161- Dear Sir/Madam: (Mr. John Smith) has $xx,xxx (exact amount will be provided in your acceptance letter) U.S. Dollars available in his account to pay for the cost associated with (his daughter, Jane Smith's,) attendance at Barry University. The letter must express: The name of the person/account holder that is supporting the expense for attending Barry University. The name of the student. Funds must be liquid (for example, checking or savings), not time deposits or stocks. The letter must be on bank letterhead; faxes and photocopies will not be accepted. Government / Institution Letter Government or institution-sponsored international students must submit a government sponsorship letter or a notarized letter of support guaranteeing payment of tuition and fees, books, room and board, medical insurance, and personal expenses for one academic year (two semesters). A and G applications are excluded from these wait times, as they are processed separately. ****IMPORTANT NOTE: Processing wait time DOES NOT include the time required for administrative processing. These procedures require additional time. Most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days of application. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case. Therefore, before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants or their representatives will need to wait at least 90 days from the date of interview or submission

of supplemental documents, whichever is later. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system. You will require an F-1 or M-1 visa if: you will study for more than 18 hours a week; or you will receive academic credit for the program of study or the program of study is required for your degree; or you are enrolled in an online degree program and you are required to travel to the United States for a short course of study which is than 18 hours a week. For September, they need to set up a payment plan by July 19 th Expenses, Tuition Fee & Living Costs US Universities fall under two major categories: public (state supported), and private (independent) institutions. International students tuition expenses at state schools are based on nonresident costs, which are still usually less expensive than those of private universities. It s important to note that the cost of a program in a US school does not necessarily affect its quality. A brief idea can be got from the following table: University Type Average Tuition Fees (annual in U.S. Dollars) Private Institutions (High Cost) $ 35,000 Private Institutions (Low Cost) $ 18,000 State Institutions (High Cost) $ 25,000 State Institutions (Low Cost) $ 12,000 The tuition fee is different for different universities and varies widely with courses. It can

vary from as low as $ 10000 a year for state universities to as much as $ 35000 per annum for some private universities. For more specific details, please contact the universities. Living Expenses The approximate annual living expenses are about $10,000, which includes accommodation as well as other daily expenses. However, the expenses are different for different people depending on the lifestyles and this is just a rough idea. The main expenses can be split up as: Rent $ 400 per month (you can live alone with that amount in a place like Auburn or share an apartment with 6 people in NY) Groceries Utilities Phone Sundry $ 100 per month $ 100 per month $ 100 per month $ 200 per month So, about $1000 per month is a good estimation. Most people can survive with $700-$1000 a month. The key here is to share apartments/houses so that you save on the utilities, fixed charge portion of phone and to some extent on groceries. Application Procedure - Undergraduate Bachelor Degree Courses in U.S.A. This section explains the process of applying to US universities for Undergraduate (Associate & Bachelor Degree) programs. For details on how to select a university that matches your interests, needs and academic background, go to the Application Forms Send enquiries at least 15 to 18 months before the proposed date of admission. There are two ways to get application forms. 1. Requesting Application Forms via email: You can request application forms from the universities website. Most universities have a form on their website which can be completed online to request application material. 2. Requesting Application Forms via Air Mail: The other way is to send a request by airmail for application material. The request should contain a brief description of your educational background, academic objectives, and source of financial support, English proficiency and standardized test scores. 3. Downloading from the university website: Many universities have a downloadable and ready to print versions of their application forms on the net. These can be used for applying just as regular forms.

Eligibility Admission to a College or University in US requires a completion of twelve years of elementary and secondary education. In the Indian context, this implies qualifying in class 12th examination or junior college as applicable. The acceptable degrees include: Indian School Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, Higher School Certificate, Higher Secondary Certificate, and All India Senior School Certificate. You can either pursue a two-year Associate degree like Associate of Science (A.S.) or a four-year degree like Bachelor of Science (B.S.). Application Requirements Academic Records Students who are applying for a Bachelor program or another undergraduate course would be required to submit a secondary school report and transcripts (report cards) of the final exams. The report form should be filled out by a school official like the principal, counselor or headmaster. This form should introduce you in the context of your whole school experience in relation to the other students in your class. Admission committees will be interested in learning how you have performed in your own educational system. The school report should talk about your accomplishments and provide a prediction of your chances for success in university-level studies. Since there is a variation between the styles of scoring used abroad and the ones used in India, ask your school to include a guide to the grading standards used in your educational system and your school. If your school ranks students by their level of academic achievement, make certain that the ranking is included with the other details. Also send the school / junior college leaving certificate as and when it is available. If the transcripts are in a language other than English, then it must be translated into English only by the issuing authority or university otherwise it may not be acceptable. Standardized Tests English Proficiency Test TOEFL: This test is mandatory for International students applying to a Graduate course or University in US. The minimum score required by most universities for admission is 570 (Paper-based test) and 230 (Computer-based test). Other Require Tests SAT I : This is required for almost all Courses and Universities. SAT II: A few Universities may require you to take two or three subject tests. ACT : A few Universities may also require you to take this test.

Letter of Recommendation Letters of reference or recommendation letters play a very important part in your admission especially in courses that earn you a master s or doctoral degree. A recommendation letter is a signed statement from a person who knows you well professionally or has taught you in a subject that is related to the course you are applying to. It should list your positive and negative qualities, strengths and other such information. The author or teacher must indicate his position, how long he/she has known the applicant and in what capacity. He/she should briefly discuss the need, importance and usefulness of the study the applicant proposes to undertake. Authors are usually asked to rank applicants in their letters of recommendation, which helps admission officers to interpret the academic credentials of foreign students. Students should obtain letters of recommendation (often on the prescribed forms sent by the institutions) from teachers who know them as a person as well as a student. You may like to request your author to give concrete examples that may show your qualities and help your case. Many universities have their own format and questions that have to be answered by the person who is giving the letter of recommendation on your behalf. Letters, which do not give enough information, can jeopardize a candidate s chances of selection. Note: Even if not mentioned, it is advisable to include at least two letters of recommendation in your applications as they increase your chances of getting admissions. Statement of Purpose The personal essays, and/or statement of purpose, play a very important role in the process of evaluating your application for both admission as well as financial aid because it gives the faculty assessing your application their most significant impression of you as an individual. This section is the key to distinguish your application from other suitable candidates and a chance to market yourself. A personal statement should include your reasons for choosing a particular course, the suitability of your education and experience for the chosen course, your personal interests and career goals. Some courses like Business school courses will have their own essay questions and format. Others may ask for a résumé or reasons for applying to that particular course. For more details on various essay topics, tips, sample essays, check out our section. Financial Support

You must submit a financial aid application if you desire financial help for your graduate studies in a US university. Financial assistance for non-us citizens is very limited. The evidence of financial support is required by universities to issue the documents needed for visa application. Although it is a requirement for application, it is usually not taken into consideration into factors that determine admission. Most universities make their admission decisions without regard for the source and amount of financial support. You would be required to submit documentation of your family s financial resources to help schools assess your need. Most of the universities have their own financial aid form, which you would have to complete. A one-year university affiliated program will make up for the fourth year of a U.S. Undergraduate degree. IMPORTANT Professional programs like the CA, ICWA, part time diplomas from a university such as those in management, communication may or may not be accepted. Though many universities, especially Business Schools, have started recognizing the Indian CA. One-year education of a two year degree course (like M.Tech, MA etc) may not be accepted by most schools. The full course has to be completed for qualification, unless there is a recognized university exam at the end of one year. No standardized policy exists regarding the acceptance of such programs. Some universities may accept the three-year Indian Graduation Degree for a few programs. Confirmation can only be obtained by either writing directly or formally applying to the universities concerned.

Application Requirements Academic Records Your past academic record is one of the most important deciding factors in securing admission to a college abroad. Most schools require you to have a reasonably good academic record especially for programs and courses offering a master s or doctoral degree. Each university has its own minimum requirement for its programs, which are flexible depending on the candidate s profile. Universities in USA have their own marking and evaluation systems, which are considerably different from the Indian system. They follow the GPA (Grade Point Average) system which is based on the 5 points scheme A,B,C,D & F. It is advisable not to convert your marks in the Indian system of grading to the American Grade Point Average system or any other system since the conversion may not be accurate. You may attach an explanatory note from your college to indicate your rank in your class and/or university. The letter may also indicate your relative place in the class and the university average, along with the number of students in the class and the number of colleges and students in the university. You may also provide any other information or documents that you feel may help you in the admission process. Students applying for Graduate courses (MBA, MS etc) are required to submit an official transcript (mark-sheets) from each college or university that they have attended after secondary school with complete details of the subjects/credits involved (for each year) and other details like correspondence courses, diplomas etc. Most universities ask for the transcript (mark-sheets) to be sealed in an envelope and signed and attested across the seal by the registrar. This procedure is to be done for each and every college that you have attended. Some universities may ask for more than one copy of the transcript. If the transcripts are in a language other than English, they must be translated into English only by the issuing authority or university. Standardized Tests Many Courses and Universities in US require you to take one of the standardized tests like GRE, GMAT along with English Proficiency tests like TOEFL, TWE and TSE. English Proficiency Tests TOEFL: This test is mandatory for International students applying to a Graduate course or University in US. The minimum score required by most universities for admission is 570 (Paper-based test) and 230 (Computer-based test). TSE : This test is important if you intend to apply for a Teaching Assistantship. Though many universities don t mention it, but it is advisable to take this test if you are looking for a Teaching Assistantship.

Other Tests Different programs require you to take certain standardized tests for admission and there is a certain minimum that you have to score in those tests to get admitted to those universities: The various tests are: GMAT : For Graduate Courses in Management. GRE : For Graduate Courses in fields other than Management. LSAT :For Admissions to Law Schools. USMLE :For Admission to Medical Colleges. IELTS: For other tests, click Work Experience Details A number of professional and vocational courses require relevant work experience. For instance, many MBAs or master s courses in information studies require at least a couple of years work experience. Most Australian universities are pretty strict about this. A detailed Résumé is an important part of your application. It should include all information of professional work experience along with the details like positions held, achievements and range of work. You may like to request your author to give concrete examples that may

show your qualities and help your case. Many universities have their own format and questions that have to be answered by the person who is giving the letter of recommendation on your behalf. Letters, which do not give enough information, can jeopardize a candidate s chances of selection. Note : Even if not mentioned, it is advisable to include at least two letters of recommendation in your applications as they increase your chances of getting admissions. For more details on various essay topics, tips, sample essays, check out our Essays/Statement of Purpose section. Financial Support You must submit a financial aid application if you desire financial help for your graduate studies in a US university. You would also be required to submit a bank statement demonstrating your financial capacity to support your education in US. Some US state institutions offer

tuition waivers to international students in return for some type of educational contribution. Interviews Interviewing prospective candidates is getting common in the US admission structure. A few universities may take your interview to know you better. The interview could be with a college representative or "third party" representatives, staff, faculty or alumni of the college or simply a telephonic interview. U.S. Education System The U.S. educational system is very different from its Indian counterpart. U.S.A. has more than 3,300 accredited colleges and universities, which offer a wide range of graduate and undergraduate programs. Types of Programs Undergraduate programs (Bachelor degree) : This is the first level of post-secondary education that begins after 12 years of primary and secondary schooling. It includes at least 4 years of education and earns a bachelor s degree

(Most Indian graduation courses are of 3 years duration). There are also two-year programs which earn an Associate degree. A student who has an associate degree has to study further for a minimum of 2 years to earn a bachelor s degree. Graduate Programs (Master s & Doctorate degree): This is the same as post-graduate education in India. It usually involves one year or more of education depending on the subject or course, and earns a master s or doctoral degree like MBA, MS or PhD. Admission to a graduate program usually requires a minimum of 16 years of formal education. That is, 12 years of primary and secondary schooling and further 4 years of college education. Types of Institutions There is no central ministry of education in the U.S. and each institution can determine its own programs and admission standards. There are private as well as state funded colleges. Universities are academic institutions that include one or more undergraduate colleges, as well as any number of graduate and professional schools, i.e. schools offering study for a single profession such as law. Four year colleges are undergraduate institutions offering academic programs leading to a bachelor s degree. Community colleges or junior colleges are undergraduate institutions offering up to two years of academic instruction beyond secondary school at a relatively low cost. These offer certificate programs that last for a few months to a year as well as associate degrees. Institutes of technology or polytechnic institutes offer specialized programs in sciences and engineering, in addition to basic sciences, humanities and the social sciences, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Accreditation Accreditation is a process by which universities and their programs are recognized for maintaining a certain level of performance and quality. Accreditation is usually done by non-governmental agencies called accreditation bodies. There are two types of accreditation: regional & professional. Regional bodies ascertain whether colleges and universities as a whole meet certain standards of educational quality. In addition, certain professional accrediting bodies evaluate the quality of education in specific fields like Business, Law etc.

Importance of Accreditation : Ensures that universities meet minimum standards. Only national and international form of evaluation for US universities. Increases the recognition of degree by employers and schools. Helps in case the student wishes a transfer to another university. To check out the list of accredited US universities, go to www.chea.org NOTE: Government of India recognizes only accredited U.S. universities It is advisable to apply to only accredited universities. Semesters US universities offer two main semester intakes: Fall Semester (September/October): This is the main intake and almost all programs are offered at this times. More financial aid is also available for this semester and as funds are allocated for the entire year during this time. Spring Semester (January/February): This is the mid-year intake. There is limited financial assistance available for this semester as most universities allocate funds to projects in the Fall semester. Some universities also have a Summer intake around July. Acccomodation in USA Accomandation Housing One of your first jobs after arriving in the United States will be to find a place to live. This section provides you with a few tips to make your search a happy one. Temporary Accommodations When you first arrive on campus you will need a place to live while you look for permanent accommodations. Many schools will provide temporary housing for international students who arrive before the semester begins. Ask the foreign student advisor or housing office for information about temporary housing. Another option if you know a student at the school is to ask them to let you stay with them for a few days. New graduate students, can often find someone in their department with room for a temporary guest. You may have to sleep on a couch, but at least you will have a roof over your head. You will also be able to ask questions of someone who is familiar with the area. Most major cities have a Council for International Visitors or similar organization to help incoming international visitors. They can often arrange for you to stay with a local family for a few days, but such arrangements must be made in advance. They also are a good source of information for international students and may provide hospitality and social events. Look for them in the telephone book, or ask at the

Traveler s Aid desk when you arrive. Every major airport, bus station, and train station has a Traveler s Aid desk. Many cities also have a youth hostel. Hostels are a good place to stay for a few days while you look for a permanent place to live. They provide dormitory style accommodations, sometimes with bunk beds in large rooms. The cost is $5 to $25 a night. You will be able to stay at the youth hostel at low cost if you are a member of the International Youth Hostel Federation. The US branch is called Hostelling International American Youth Hostels (HI-AYH). A one year membership is $25 ($10 if you are under age 18). For more information, call 1-202-783-6161, fax 1-202-783-6171, or send email to hiayhserv@hiayh.org. Your travel agent should be able to help you become a member. A good source of information about hostels is the Internet Guide to Hosteling. Lastly, you can always stay in a hotel or motel. This is the most expensive option, and you will need to make a reservation with a credit card to guarantee a room. Parking is expensive at hotels, and there is often a large tax on long distance telephone calls placed from your room. Permanent Accommodations The available options include renting an apartment, renting a house, or buying a house. Most international students cannot afford to buy a house, so we will not discuss this option. Most university students in the US live on or near campus. Students who live offcampus generally find a place less than a mile or two away. Not only is this convenient for getting to and from campus, but much of the social life occurs on campus. The US educational experience is not confined to the classroom, and you will find yourself learning as much from your fellow students as from the faculty. If the school offers on-campus accommodations for international students, you should seriously consider living on-campus, at least for the first year. Since this is probably your first trip to the United States and your first time living alone, oncampus housing will help soften the transition to life in the United States. Later, when you are more familiar with the neighborhood, you can consider moving offcampus. Renting a house is usually a viable option only if you will be sharing it with several roommates. You will certainly get more for your money if you rent a house. But most communities have limits on the number of unrelated people who can live together, with most cities having a limit ranging from 3 to 5. These laws are intended to prevent overcrowding for health and safety reasons. In any event, the process for renting a house is similar to renting an apartment. The cost of renting an apartment varies considerably depending on the part of the country and the local supply and demand. A one bedroom apartment in Pittsburgh might cost $400 a month while the same apartment in Boston or San Jose will cost $1,200 or more. The school s housing office or financial aid office can provide you with an estimate of the annual cost of renting an off-campus apartment. Finding an Apartment 1. Ask the housing office and current students which neighborhoods are safe and which should be avoided
