I am proud of the way all senior students conducted themselves at their respective activities today. Thank you to staff and parents who supported both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students. This Sunday is the third Sunday of Advent. This is also known as Gaudete Sunday (from the Latin Gaudete to rejoice). On Sunday the third (pink) candle will be lit on the Advent wreath. The pink candle represents joy. Next Tuesday evening (13 th December) our Grade 6 students will have their official Graduation ceremony. Grade 6 students are asked to be at school at 5:45 p.m. for photos with the formalities commencing at 6:00 p.m. This is an exciting time for our Grade 6 s, and their families, as they celebrate 7 years of primary schooling at St. Joachim s. Thank you to all Grade 6 students, and their families, for the fabulous contributions you have made to St. Joachim s over the years. The annual Parent helpers thank you morning tea will be held in the staffroom next Wednesday (14 th December) from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. This is an opportunity for the school to thank parents for their generous contributions in a variety of ways throughout the year. Please note: our end of year awards ceremony will take place next Wednesday (14 th December) in the hall commencing at 1:30 p.m. Our local Federal MP, Mark Dreyfus, will be in attendance and award the annual Community Spirit and Leadership award, and our local State MP, Sonya Kilkenny, will present the Community Leadership award. The inaugural Jen Hunter Literacy Award and classroom, specialist and other awards will also be announced at this ceremony. Our end of school year Mass will be celebrated by Fr. John next Thursday (15 th December) at 10:00 a.m. in the hall. This is a fitting way to give thanks for the blessings and achievements we have experienced as a school community this year. All parents are warmly invited to attend. St. Joachim s Christmas carols evening is also next Thursday (15 th December) commencing at 6:00 p.m. in the hall. Thank you to all families for assisting with costumes for the evening. The carols promise to be an enthralling performance and a great opportunity to celebrate Christmas and the birth of Jesus as a Catholic school and faith community. A reminder that school will finish for the end of the 2016 school year at 3:15 p.m. next Friday (16 th December). Regards, Paul Dwyer, Principal.

Education in Faith Ms Zeeta Andrew Religious Education Leader zandrew@sjcarrumdowns.catholic.edu.au St Joachim s End of Year Mass Thursday 15th December We will be celebrating our final whole school mass for 2016. This week we lit the Advent Candle of Joy, to remind us that we are called to be people of joy joy in all that has been given to us and to have hope in our daily lives, knowing that God is always with us. This will be a time for the school community to gather and celebrate all of the fantastic things that have happened throughout the 2016 year before we head into the Christmas holidays. Mass will begin at 10am at the school hall. All are warmly invited to join us for this special celebration. Performing Arts News Jody Banks Performing Arts Teacher jbanks@sjcarrumdowns.catholic.edu.au Last Tuesday afternoon we were lucky enough to have the McClelland College Senior Band come and play for our school in a performance that was both entertaining and educational. The secondary students demonstrated the instruments in each instrumental family, played a few pieces of music for our children to listen to, and even invited some of our students to have a turn at conducting the band! MJW had lots of questions about Bronx. They stayed calm and relaxed during his visit and learnt a lot about responsible pet ownership :)

CAFÉ Strategy: Use Punctuation to Enhance Phrasing and Prosody As experienced readers, the use of punctuation comes automatically. We read a story and use the punctuation to make meaning of the text. For beginning readers, learning to read in phrases is important. The meaning of text is embedded in a chunk of words, not just in isolated words themselves. The order and the way words are put together in a text, creates the meaning. Your child has been encouraged to compare the reading of text to spoken language. When reading text aloud does it have the intonation and prosody we hear every day in our conversations with others? Your child is learning the fluency strategy: Use Punctuation to Enhance Phrasing and Prosody. Paying close attention to all punctuation will assist with fluency and overall comprehension of text. How can you help your child with this strategy at home? 1. Read aloud a segment of text to your child. Model how you control your voice to go up and down. Highlight punctuation in the text and discuss what your voice did when you came to the punctuation. It may even help to read it once without intonation or attention to punctuation, see what differences your child is able to notice. 2. Using a pencil, underline a phrase in a sentence and model how the words are said together without a pause. Have your child repeat this phrase for you a few different times until fluency is attained. 3. Give your child a highlighter and ask him/her to highlight all punctuation in a portion of text. Then, go through the text with your child, talking about what their voice should do at each highlighted spot. Finish by having your child read the excerpt aloud one or two times. Thank you for your continued support at home! Written by: Allison Behne 2010 www.thedailycafe.com Ideas and strategies are taken from: The CAFE Book, written by Gail Boushey & Joan Moser
