2 Answer all the questions. 1 Use Resource 1 and Resource 2 in the Resource Booklet. (a) What was the growth rate of the world s population in 2010?... % [1] (b) By how many did the world s population grow from 1950 to 2010?... billions [1] (c) Identify a country from Resource 2 where the percentage of the population living in urban areas is over 81%.... [1] (d) State one way that the percentage of the population living in urban areas in Europe differs from that in Africa.... [1]

(a) (i) What is the expected change in Africa s urban population from 2000-2030?... % [1] (ii) Compare the expected change in Africa s urban population between 2000 and 2030 with the expected change in MEDCs urban population in the same years.......... [1] (b) For each population pyramid choose a different age group that may cause a problem for the economy of LEDCs in the future. 3 Use Resources 5 and 6 in the Resource Booklet and your own knowledge. 4 The world s population is becoming more concentrated in towns and cities and this trend is set to continue. Using Resources 5 and 6 explain the push and pull factors which cause people to move from rural to urban areas... [6]

4 Use Resources 7, 8 and 9 in the Resource Booklet and your own knowledge. 5 Many problems exist for people in areas like Khayelitsha and the favelas in Rio de Janeiro. Using Resources 7, 8 and 9, describe two problems faced by the people who live in these areas and give detailed reasons why these problems occur... [6] Turn over

5 Use Resources 8, 9 and 10 in the Resource Booklet and your own knowledge. 6 You have been asked to advise the Cape Town authorities how best to manage the population of Khayelitsha in the future. Three options are to be discussed. OPTION 1 OPTION 2 OPTION 3 Provide adequate services such as a clean water supply to all the existing informal homes. Aim to improve as many homes as possible in the quickest time. Gradually replace the informal dwellings with homes like those shown in Resource 10. The authority will provide permanent houses for everyone living informally. Encourage and help to fund self-help schemes and projects, to increase the number of permanent houses and neighbourhoods with a full range of services. Task Choose one of the above options. Write your report which should: Explain the advantages of your chosen option and how these advantages are sustainable for the future. Explain disadvantages of your chosen option. Suggest additional developments to help make Khayelitsha a sustainable community in the future. Explain how these developments will make the community more sustainable. [16]
