Welcome Parents! Agenda: House Bill 5 Assessment Requirements Foundation Graduation Plan with Endorsements Opportunities for Advancement Distinguished Level of Performance Registration of Classes
House Bill 5 - Overview Passed in 2013, House Bill 5 changed the requirements for a Texas high school diploma and the assessments mandated for graduation. The new graduation requirements went into effect with the 9 th grade class entering in the 2014-2015 school year.
HB 5 Assessments There are five STAAR End of Course (EOC) exams required for a high school diploma. English I English II Algebra I Biology United States History The EOC exams are attached to specific courses, not a particular grade level. For example, if your student is taking Algebra I as an 8 th grader, he/she will take the Algebra I EOC in May.

Foundation Requirements Discipline Foundation Foundation with Endorsement English - Must consist of English I, II, III (ESOL I 4 4 and ESOL II may be substituted for English I and II for students with limited English proficiency), and an additional/advanced English course Math - Must include Algebra I, Geometry, and an additional/advanced math course beyond Algebra I 3 4 (Must include Algebra II) Science - Must include Biology, one credit selected 3 4 from IPC, Chemistry, or Physics, and one additional/advanced, lab-based science course Social Studies - Must include World Geography or 3 3 World History, US History, one-half credit Government, and one-half credit Economics Physical Education - May include Athletics or PE 1 1 (up to 4 credits), two fall semesters of Marching Band or Color Guard. Foreign Language Spanish I and Spanish II 2 2 Fine Arts - Band, Art, Music Appreciation or 1 1 Principles & Elements of Floral Design Speech Demonstrate Proficiency Electives 5 5 Endorsement Courses 2 BISD Elective ½ ½ Total 22½ 26½
Endorsements Definition an endorsement is a specific set of classes taken in a coherent sequence to create a more specialized area of study for a student Endorsements customize a diploma to support a student s college and career pathway All students must choose an endorsement upon entering high school Students may change their endorsement choice at any time during high school if a graduation plan allows it Schools must keeps a record of which endorsement each student selects along with a parent signature indicating approval of the selection
Endorsement Options Endorsement Requirements beyond the Foundation Core 1 additional credit of Math 1 additional credit of Science 4 courses in a coherent sequence chosen in an endorsement area with a minimum of 2 in the same career cluster Distinguished Level Of Achievement Students must successfully complete Chemistry or Physics and Algebra II to graduate with a Distinguished Level of Achievement Bosqueville High School offers all five state recognized endorsements Multidisciplinary Studies STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Arts and Humanities Business and Industry Public Service
Multidisciplinary Studies 9 th Grade 10 th Grade 11 th Grade 12 th Grade 4 Credits in EACH of the Four Foundation Subject Areas (4x4 Content Area) English I Algebra I/Geometry Biology World Geography English II Geometry/Algebra II IPC/Chemistry World History English III Algebra II/Math Mod/or Advanced Math Chemistry/Physics/ A&P US History English IV Algebra II/Math Mod/or Advanced Math Physics/A&P/or other Science Government Economics A student may earn an endorsement in Multidisciplinary Studies upon completing one of the following options:
Arts & Humanities 9 th Grade 10 th Grade 11 th Grade 12 th Grade Art Art 1 Art 2 Art 3 Art 4 Music Band 1 Band 2 Band 3 Band 4 Language Spanish 1 Spanish 2 Spanish 3 Spanish 4 Social Studies A student may earn an endorsement in Art & Humanities upon completing one of the following options: World Geography World History US History (Reg. or Dual Credit) Government/Econo mics (Reg. or Dual Credit) AND Dual Credit Psychology & Sociology
Public Service 9 th Grade 10 th Grade 11 th Grade 12 th Grade Health Science Principles of Human Services Lifetime Nutrition & Wellness/Dollars & Sense Child Development Counseling & Mental Health A student may earn an endorsement in Public Service upon completing course requirements in the following disciplines:
Business & Industry 9 th Grade 10 th Grade 11 th Grade 12 th Grade Agriculture, Food, & Natural Resources Animal Science Principles of Ag Livestock Production Small Animal Mgmt/Professional Communications Agriculture, Food, & Natural Resources Ag Mechanics Advanced Animal Science Principles of Ag Ag Mech Tech Ag Equip Design Ag Power Sys and/or Practicum in Ag Hospitality & Tourism BIM (Online) Intro to Culinary Arts Culinary Arts Food Science Finance A student may earn an endorsement in Business and Industry upon completing course requirements in the following disciplines: BIM (Online) Money Matters (Online) Accounting 1 (Online) Dual Credit Accounting Arts, Audio/Video Tech & Communications BIM (Online) Graphic Design Graphic Design II Graphic Design III BIM (Online) Animation Advanced Animation Video Game Design Information Technology BIM (Online) Digital Media Web Technologies Programming
STEM 9 th Grade 10 th Grade 11 th Grade 12 th Grade Math Total of 5 credits including Algebra II and two additional math courses Requires a total of 5 credits in math by successfully completing Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra II and two additional courses for which Algebra II is a prerequisite. A student may earn an endorsement in STEM upon completing one of the following options: Science Total of 5 credits including Chemistry & Physics and two additional courses Requires a total of 5 credits in science by successfully completing Biology, Chemistry, Physics and two additional advanced science courses.
Opportunities for Advancement Honors and Advanced Coursework Honors courses PreAP courses Dual Credit courses (beginning 10 th grade) Top 10% Important designation for college acceptance and guaranteed admission* (*exception UT) Class rank is based on weighted GPA (Grade Point Average) on a 100 point scale Must complete the requirements for an endorsement Must obtain the Distinguished Level of Achievement (completion of Algebra II) Performance Acknowledgements
Performance Acknowledgements Students may earn one or more performance acknowledgement(s) for outstanding performance in any of the following areas at Bosqueville High School: Dual Credit Coursework (12 hours with a 3.0 or better) Bilingualism PSAT, SAT, ACT

Sign and return the course selection form once it is sent home.
