10 Emerging Leaders MBA Tailored mix of academic study and real-world skills Today s business leaders want graduates who can hit the ground running and bring real and lasting value to their organization. The Emerging Leaders MBA program is designed specifically for young professionals and provides the knowledge, confidence and experience required to make immediate contributions upon being hired. FIRM GROUNDING IN BUSINESS Students without an undergraduate business background will begin the program by developing a solid foundation in the fundamental areas of business. All students in the program will pursue courses in leadership, strategy and business process management to build an understanding of how the various aspects of an organization work together. And since young business professionals need both breadth and depth of expertise, elective courses allow you to pursue one of eight concentrations to enhance your learning and add value for a future employer. All applicants will be evaluated for foundation waivers if they have completed relevant program course work within the past five years with a suitable grade from an accredited institution. CHOOSE FROM ONE OF EIGHT CONCENTRATIONS: n Accountancy n Business Analytics n Economics of Financial Markets n Finance n Informations Systems and Technology n Law and Taxation n Leadership n Marketing 8 bentley.edu/graduate/elmba David Schwarzkopf n Program Director n n dschwarzkopf@bentley.edu

11 1 2 3 HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE The Emerging Leaders MBA is one of the only programs of its kind in the world to incorporate three distinctive experiential learning opportunities where students can immediately put what they learn in the classroom into practice: Business Process Management and the Value Chain This course focuses on complex problem-solving for the value chain through simulations and projects. Teams of students act as executives, designing new products (goods or services) and the associated supply chains, including new product introduction, forecasting, supplier selection, production, delivery, and returns. Teams must work together and use leadership, managerial, and design thinking skills to deliver tangible results even as unexpected events arise from the market. Corporate Immersion Course This course emphasizes the use of multidisciplinary skills to identify, define and solve complex business issues within an organization. The class is designed to mirror the pressures of a corporate environment and requires students to defend their research, analysis and recommendations. Global Business Experience Students travel overseas for a 10-day immersion experience, where they meet with company and government officials to learn the business practices of another country. This experience is a key component of the program and a strong benefit for students, as it develops their understanding of business in its broadest possible context. CIS Learning and Technology Sandbox MULTIPLY YOUR EXPERTISE: MS+MBA Understanding how organizations can leverage information technology to improve key business processes is a necessity in today s complex business environment. Bentley s MS+MBA program offers a rare, ready path for building expertise that is well balanced between management and technology. The curriculum combines the breadth of the Emerging Leaders MBA with the deep technical skills of the MS in Information Technology. The focus on aligning process and technology change to meet strategic business objectives offers students a competitive edge with employers. The network s news programming and businesses, including Today and Dateline, are under his watch as senior VP and CFO. News is a very dynamic business, he says. You can t know what the news cycle is going to be, which means you don t know how much money you ll have to spend covering it. At the same time, there are budget commitments that we need to hit. So every day brings a different challenge. Pietrycha credits Bentley for honing his skill at assessing the financial tipping point of decisions such as sending NBC news correspondents to cover stories on location. The MBA definitely helped develop my analytical and strategic thinking skills, says Pietrycha, who combined graduate study with his full-time position at the time, at BAE Systems. The degree offered a solid foundation for his career move into the media industry. Day to day, I can be working on anything from budgeting to controllership, he says. 15 RISING TO THE TOP Theresa Bresten MSF Vice President and Treasurer, HP Hood Theresa Bresten developed a taste for challenge early on. My parents stressed the importance of learning new things, she says. I was taught that I shouldn t limit myself. That nourishing lesson in self-confidence has helped take Bresten to the upper reaches of corporate America, most recently, as vice president and treasurer for HP Hood LLC. I have the opportunity to provide leadership in making business decisions on a multitude of issues, says the Missouri native, whose résumé also includes posts at Coca-Cola Bottling of New York and General Cinema Corporation. I ve seen Hood through centralization projects, decentralization projects, acquisitions, divestitures, expansion, contraction, and several different ownership scenarios. Her current role involves overseeing the full range of finance-related matters: tax compliance, risk management, lender relationships, employee retirement savings plans, external reporting and leasing, to name a few. Early in her tenure at Hood, Bresten enrolled in Bentley s Master of Science in Finance (MSF) program to top off her credentials. Since I was progressing in my career at the same time, I was able to apply what I was learning at Bentley on the job, recalls Bresten, who was also raising a son and daughter. It made me even more invested in the program. School, career and family presented a full cup of responsibilities. I needed to learn how to be realistic, flexible and adaptable. Persistence and a watchful eye have also fueled Bresten s rise. For me, career success has meant building a knowledge base and technical expertise over time. I am continually looking for opportunities to challenge myself and further my skills. 13

23 VALUE ADDED Dan Flanagan MSFP Senior Managing Director, Lexington Wealth Management Gazing into the future is the stuff of everyday work for Dan Flanagan and he wouldn t have it any other way. The financial planner and investment manager started out as a CPA. Seven years into it, I found I lacked passion for the work, he explains. It was all review of past events; I wanted to focus forward. The field of financial planning was a powerful draw and Bentley topped his list of choices to prepare for the career switch. As he puts it: I wanted an advanced degree in financial planning, not just a certificate. The decision paid immediate dividends, as Flanagan met MSFP program founder Glenn Frank, an adjunct assistant professor at Bentley. Frank brought Flanagan into his company at the time, Calibre Advisory Services, where they worked together for 10 years. I was able to attend school at night and apply the lessons immediately at work every day, Flanagan recalls. It was fantastic. Bentley courses offered the nuts and bolts of the field a prerequisite for confident communication with clients. When you deeply understand issues such as how financial markets and instruments work, clients know they can rely on you for sound advice. The program attracts many talented executives already working in the field, he adds. I gained a tremendous amount from class discussions about how the field operates. Today, Flanagan finds his work rewarding on many fronts. I add value to people s lives literally and figuratively for the present, while building toward the future. Students take four of the required courses in California, five courses online, and the 10th course at Bentley s User Experience Center. LEADING THE INDUSTRY Ben Huggins MSHFID Interactive Designer YouTube With a background in psychology and media studies, Ben Huggins considered Bentley s MSHFID program ideal preparation for the emerging field of user experience design. Bentley s HFID program was so intriguing to me because it grounds design in the context of real-world business, says Huggins, who now works as an interaction designer at YouTube. Taking classes taught by industry leaders and working closely with companies on their design challenges was a great way to learn. To Huggins, Bentley was less about software tools and more about mastering the methods and process that drive great design. He says 90 percent of UX design is about making difficult decisions lots of them, all day long. At Bentley, students are pushed to challenge those decisions, to constantly be thinking and evaluating. Bentley has an energy about it. From the virtual class options to the rapidly expanding West Coast campus, it s a program that s constantly innovating on its own model not unlike the UX field itself, he says. For me, Bentley was about more than becoming a better designer. It was about becoming an innovator, an influencer and a leader. 27 GIVING PASSION A PLACE AT THE OFFICE Greg Avola MSIT Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer, Untappd Greg Avola designed his first website at age 13. Some people love books; some love going to the movies, he observes. My passion is coding. I could do it 24 hours a day. Today, Avola is a New York City-based web developer whose latest venture aims to bring the world together over a cold beer. He co-founded and serves as chief technical officer for Untappd, a social media platform that is changing how beer drinkers think about their brews and how beer makers relate to their customers. He and his business partner hit on the idea during a brainstorming session. Beer drinkers, they recognized, lacked a strong online community. Drinking is a social activity, but it wasn t being presented in a social media way, explains Avola, who holds an undergraduate degree from Bentley as well the MS in Information Technology. Through Untappd, which launched in October 2010, friends can tell friends which beers they re drinking and what they think of the beverage. Another goal is to strengthen the ties between brewer and consumer. With the current infrastructure, beer makers often have little direct contact with and information about who is buying. We want an environment where brewers and consumers can get valuable information on both sides of the table, he says of the site, which now boasts more than 100,000 users. As Avola works to translate that popularity into profitability for Untappd, he credits Bentley for helping me succeed in a lot of things I m doing. Business and IT need to talk to each other and at Bentley, they do. 31 DECODING THE TAX CODE Bruce McLean MST Revenue Agent, Internal Revenue Service For Bruce McLean, insights in the classroom have translated into confidence in the field. When I saw Bentley s wide variety of tax courses, I knew this was the place for me, he says. I also saw that Bentley s reputation in the field would help me after graduation. The quality of instruction in the Master of Science in Taxation program is excellent, he reports. The professors are very knowledgeable, with many years of experience in the field. Often, I had insights into concepts I thought I d never understand. Today, as a revenue agent for the IRS, McLean conducts examinations of entities that include individual taxpayers, sole proprietorships, corporations, partnerships, and fiduciaries. Revenue agents are constantly researching and applying tax law, he explains. This is where my Bentley education has made a big difference. It has given me a comfort level with tax law and the ability to analyze issues. And what of the ever-changing landscape of tax law? I don t feel intimidated when I run into new questions. 32 DUAL DEGREES Organizations of all kinds have stepped up the search for employees with both a broad understanding of business, leadership and strategy, as well as deep skills in a specific area. Bentley was among the first to give students an avenue for gaining general management skills and focused expertise in a particular business field. In addition to the integrated MS+MBA, the university offers Dual Degree programs through which students can typically earn two graduate credentials in three years of full-time study. FLEXIBILITY AND CHOICE Dual Degree programs offer choices and the flexibility of full-time or part-time study. According to the Graduate Management Admission Council, only 2 percent of the approximately 1,400 MBA programs nationwide have a built-in opportunity for pursuing a second degree. Combine either the Emerging Leaders MBA or Professional MBA with one of the Master of Science (MS) programs listed below. Credits from four courses apply to both degrees, reducing the overall length of the student s program. Choose from these options: MS in Accountancy MS in Business Analytics MS in Finance MS in Financial Planning MS in Human Factors in Information Design MS in Information Technology MS in Marketing Analytics MS in Taxation ADMISSION FOR CURRENT STUDENTS AND ALUMNI Current and former Bentley graduate students may be eligible to apply up to 12 credits toward a second degree, and the application fee is waived for these candidates. Alumni should contact the Graduate Admission Office for an alumni application; current students should contact the Graduate Office of Student and Academic Services. ANOTHER WAY TO BOOST CREDENTIALS Combining the MBA with a graduate certificate can offer an edge in a competitive job market. Bentley offers certificates in business analytics, marketing analytics, business ethics, and other areas corresponding with our Master of Science programs. New students must be admitted to both the MBA and MS programs of their choice. The GMAT or GRE is required for admission, even if the MS degree program accepts the CPA, evidence of having passed the bar exam, or other industry credentials. 30 bentley.edu/graduate/dual-degrees David Schwarzkopf n Program Director n n dschwarzkopf@bentley.edu

33 TWICE THE IMPACT Frances Karandy MBA, MSHFID Principal User Experience Researcher, Product Design Group, Citrix Systems The principles of design have always intrigued Frances Karandy. A former fine arts major, she paid close attention to how the presentation of information could help, or hinder, communication among individuals and groups. When she decided to pursue graduate study, the Dual Degree program at Bentley caught her eye right away. It was important to me to obtain both degrees, says Karandy, who earned the MBA and the MS in Human Factors in Information Design. The professors, peers and first-rate facilities make Bentley the ideal learning environment. Those facilities include the User Experience Center, where she gained valuable practical experience conducting usability testing for outside clients. Not a lot of schools have a lab on site. But if you re going to learn the theory, you need access to facilities where you can put it into practice. The double exposure to design and business has been a powerful asset for Karandy, as she works to bring the customer perspective into designing, developing and marketing technology products. I use what I learned at Bentley every day, she says of her work at Citrix Systems, a leader in building cloud solutions to enable virtualization and mobile work styles. Customer empathy and a user-centered design process are core to developing products that change and improve the way people work and live. 31
