Foreword of the Dean Ladies and Gentlemen, It is my great pleasure today to introduce you to our first parttime M.Sc. in Management Graduates here at HHL. A class that besides many other aspects I am particularly proud of, as it not only consists of outstanding students but also stands for a program that is ranked amongst the top business schools in Europe and in the part-time alternative is exclusively offered by HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management. But what are the skills that our students have acquired during their time at HHL and which make them so outstanding? We here at HHL put our emphasis on a General Management approach with a special focus on entrepreneurship and business ethics. Our academic quality is underscored by a global outlook and a lifelong service and support network. We are driven by our strong desire to conduct economic research with a clear scientific foundation but at the same time with a high relevance for business practice and locational competition. This is what we practice on campus, what we teach our students and what we hope they will carry into the professional world. All of the above mentioned skills you will find in this resume book, with every student telling you more about their personal background and their academic career. I am sure these individuals will exactly match your needs for responsible leaders and decision makers in the corporate world. Therefore, I hope you will enjoy learning about our students featured in this resume book and find it helpful in your search for your future executives. Yours sincerely Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart Dean of HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management 4
Foreword of the Academic Director of M.Sc. Programs Dear readers As the Academic Director of HHL s M.Sc. Programs it is my pleasure to introduce you to the first graduating class of our part-time M.Sc. in Management. HHL s part-time M.Sc. Program is widely considered to be the pioneer of high-quality part-time M.Sc. in Management programs in Germany. The content is based on HHL s full-time M.Sc. Program which has been ranked at number 19 worldwide in the Financial Times Master in Management ranking in Structured to fit the students busy work schedule classes take place every second weekend in Leipzig. By undertaking the part-time program at HHL the students have committed themselves to both their full time job as well as further studies in order to enhance their knowledge and develop their career. The part-time M.Sc. in Management Program combines solid theoretical knowledge with hands-on managerial practice. Cooperation, conflict resolution, decision-making and communication skills are all an integral part of the HHL curriculum. Teamwork and networking are both expected and encouraged by means of small classes that allow direct and informal contact with teaching faculty and visiting business leaders. To broaden their international experience the students also have the opportunity to spend an exchange term abroad as part of their studies at one of our more than 100 partner universities worldwide. Despite the heavy workload within their companies the current class made use of this opportunity considerably. Changes in the environment in which most companies operate nowadays give rise to the greatest challenges and entrepreneurial opportunities. The goal of HHL s M.Sc. Program is to prepare our graduates to meet these challenges and take advantage of the opportunities. I invite you to explore the talents of the first graduating class of our part-time M.Sc. in Management Program. Yours sincerely Prof. Dr. Henning Zülch Academic Director M.Sc.Programs at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management Professor of Accounting and Auditing 5
The part-time M.Sc. Program at HHL Excellent combination of theory and practice In 2011, HHL extended its portfolio of innovative study programs by introducing the part-time Master Program in Management (M.Sc.) for young professionals to gain a state-of-the-art, hands-on management education and improve their career chances with an internationally recognized degree without giving up their job. Weekend-based teaching units in combination with residential weeks that suit the student s working schedule allow them to advance professionally and academically at the same time. The part-time M.Sc. Program is focused on practical aspects of business management and at the same time is based on latest research results. At the end of the degree program students will be able to deal with complex business questions drawing from a solid theoretical and methodological foundation. But technical expertise and outstanding theoretical knowledge are only one side of the equation; it is equally important to be able to apply the expertise and knowledge, to communicate and to put the skills to good use in practice. To enable students to achieve this goal, HHL incorporates not just real-life case studies and management solutions but also places special emphasis on imparting an overriding sense of responsibility and on soft skills. More than ever before, managers nowadays must develop unconventional ideas and open horizons beyond departmental, company or national boundaries. Whilst individual performance is important, teamwork is the decisive factor in success, and so courses in co-operation, conflict resolution, communication and team working are compulsory at HHL. The fusion of theory and practice guarantees HHL graduates the best possible preparation for a career in management. After the completion of a Master s thesis the students graduate with the internationally recognized degree of Master of Science in Management (M.Sc.). Highly diverse student body International guest lecturers Emphasis on social competence, teamwork and communication skills General Management education and research on highest academic standards Leading speakers from different industries Small groups ensure close contact between students and lecturers Strong connection between theory & practice 6
Holistic education of tomorrow s business leaders Based on the feedback that HHL has received from its many partner companies, from its alumni network and from its current full-time M.Sc. participants, the school has created a unique curriculum for the part-time M.Sc. Program. To prepare effective and responsible business leaders for the challenges of the 21st century, the part-time M.Sc. curriculum focuses on a holistic integrated management approach, which provides students with academic input, but most importantly helps them to develop those key qualifications which are essential for a successful management career in a globalized world: working and communicating effectively in international teams, making responsible decisions, and meeting challenges with creativity, sensitivity and initiative. The curriculum is perfectly designed to meet the individual needs and interests of the students and is structured in the following major parts: Pre-Module: The pre-module consists of two sub-modules. These sub-modules can be studied separately depending on the number of additional credit points needed. Students can choose the following modules: Project Management, Introduction to Management and Economics. Core Modules: Three compulsory core modules are the foundation for the M.Sc. at HHL. Within these modules students will deepen their general management knowledge and understanding of business and economics. Furthermore, students will gain state-of the art leadership skills. The compulsory core modules are: Integrated Management, Economics and Leadership Skills. Elective Modules: The elective modules provide students with advanced management knowledge and skills. In order to meet the individual needs and interests, students can choose five out of six elective modules: Finance, Accounting, Marketing Management, Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Innovation & Entrepreneurship and Strategy. Master Thesis: The master thesis is a cornerstone of HHL s academic approach within the part-time M.Sc. Program. Students combine a topic from their personal managerial experience with the lessons learned during the study modules to write an academic paper. Master Thesis Master Thesis Finance Accounting Marketing Management Logistic & Supply Chain Management Innovation & Entrepreneurship Strategy Elective Modules months Integrated Management Economics Core Modules Leadership Skills Pre-Module (Project Management + Introduction to Management & Economics) Pre-Module 7
Membership in the Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter at HHL Recognition of academic quality Some CVs mention Beta Gamma Sigma membership. While it is well-known in the US business world, the concept may need explanation outside beyond it. Beta Gamma Sigma is the academic honor organization of business schools which are accredited by AACSB International the Association to Advance Collegiate Studies of Business. The three letters BGS stand for the Greek words "bebaeos", "gnosis", and "spoude", which translate, respectively, as honor, wisdom, and earnestness. The mission of BGS is to encourage and honor high academic achievement by students of business and management in business programs accredited by AACSB, and to foster personal and professional excellence. Accompanying its accreditation by AACSB in 2004, HHL set up its own chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma. Membership in BGS signals recognition of academic excellence. Every year, HHL s chapter invites the top 20 per cent of its graduates and all doctoral candidates to become members of the honor organization, thus acknowledging their outstanding academic results. 8

Student Initiatives at HHL European Ivy League European Ivy League, founded in 1997, is the largest student initiative at HHL. It has become an outstanding annual HHL sports tournament organized autonomously by students. Every year, national and international students from Europe s top business schools gather for three exciting days of fun, soccer and management. Furthermore, it is a homecoming for many HHL Alumni, welcoming many new friends and an excellent opportunity for networking. Friday s Opening Ceremony and BBQ gives everyone a chance to revive old contacts as well as make new ones. Saturday is Sports Day, when the participating schools and corporate teams kick off the soccer tournament. On Saturday night, the legendary European Ivy League Party takes place and on Sunday, the weekend closes with a Farwell Brunch. The event has six components: Coordination & Logistics, Finance & Accounting, Sponsoring, Communications, Sporting Event and Participation Management. European Ivy League gives HHL students a chance to demonstrate and develop their organizational talents and encourages teamwork in a non-academic project. The Negotiation Challenge Launched in 2007 as part of a joint project by students and doctoral candidates from HHL and Harvard Law School, TNC is about testing communication and mental acuity skills in a "real world" negotiation competition with other international teams. As the first international negotiation competition in Europe and one of few international negotiation competitions in the world the primary idea behind the TNC is to provide a competitive platform to help prepare students for the complex business negotiations that they will face after graduation. Participating teams must prove their skills and compete through four rounds. In the final, the two best teams compete in front of an international jury composed of lawyers, business leaders and professors. The best team wins a trophy and receives the title of "World Champion of Negotiation". Furthermore, TNC offers a great opportunity to experience diverse ways of negotiation and to meet and network with students from various countries with different backgrounds and cultures. HHL Women The Business Network HHL Women The Business Network is an initiative of female students at HHL which aims to increase the proportion of women in management and to establish a network comprising students and female executive managers in the business world. Within the initiative, the students come into contact with representatives from business and politics, and explore intensely the issues women face in positions of leadership and responsibility such as career development, the work-life balance and positive and negative experiences. Guest lectures by national and international leaders, a mentoring program as well as special workshops will open new perspectives for female students at HHL and support them in their professional development. 10
The student initiative was founded in 2000 and aims to promote entrepreneurial thinking at HHL and beyond. Students regularly meet and discuss recent developments in the startup scene and analyze business ideas and business models. In addition, they focus on developing their skills with a view to starting a business, and also organize field trips to start-ups and investors throughout Germany to learn more about the world of entrepreneurship. As countless examples of successful start-ups by HHL alumni show, the combination of information provided in lectures and the entrepreneurial major together with the spirit amongst the student body creates a unique and empowering experience in the area. The initiative is managed entirely by students and is supported by the Program for International Entrepreneurship at HHL. Energy Club HHL Energy Club is a student initiative which was founded and led by students who are interested in the energy sector for their future professional life. The initiative aims to establish cooperation with companies in the energy and related sectors as well as academics doing research in this field in order to bring together the academic and business worlds as well as wider society to conduct a fruitful discussion about the future of energy. The intention is to raise awareness about energy topics through these activities, and to educate students who would like to work in the energy sector and prepare them to meet the challenges of the future. FAUST Circle of Friends of International Students FAUST also known as Freundeskreis Ausländischer Studierender grew out of the initiative of both international and German students at HHL. Its aim is to facilitate the integration of international students into the HHL community, and to familiarize German students with foreign cultures. During the term various events are organized by FAUST, e.g. cooking events, visits of orchestras, operas, museums, festivals, Christmas markets and trips to other German cities like Dresden, Munich or Weimar. All these activities are designed to help international students feel at home in Leipzig and to make their stay as interesting as possible. Evenings devoted to the traditions of certain countries are held regularly - a good opportunity for German students to find out more about other cultures. This all provides an excellent opportunity for the students to experience a true cultural exchange. Business Students Without Borders Business Students Without Borders (BSWB) founded in 2009 aims to establish an organisation which enables business students to conduct philanthropic projects in developing countries. The organization wants to empower its members to identify, design, and implement sustainable, project based solutions to issues faced by people in developing and subsistence economies around the world. By realizing different projects, the students will connect with the local communities to learn from each other by developing business-based projects that solve local economic and social issues. In doing so, the association utilizes the school s knowhow for the target communities. For students, the organization provides a valuable opportunity to work charitable and integrate classroom learning into practice. For the beginning, the club works closely together with existing aid agencies in Leipzig who already have relations to communities in developing countries worldwide. Furthermore, the club could seek to cooperate with ongoing development projects when deemed appropriate. Consulting projects for small enterprises or the creation of feasible plans to bring economic development to a village in a developing country could be possible activities. 11
