2 Chinese Politics in a Globalized World, Spring 2012 For the first me in the history of the Nordic Centre, a full semester-long course programme in Chinese poli cs and interna onal rela ons was held jointly with students both from Fudan University and from Nordic NC member universi es. The programme was jointly organized by faculty members of the Department of Compara ve Poli cs, University of Bergen, Norway; Department of Poli cal Science and NIAS (Nordic Ins tute of Asian Studies), University of Copenhagen, Denmark; and The School of Interna onal Rela ons and Public Affairs, Fudan University, China. The Nordic Centre, Fudan University, is the main unit of ins tu onal coordina on and administra on. The course programme consisted three modules, including lectures in Chinese poli cs, society and culture, as well as Chinese language. For the Nordic students, par cipa ng in all three modules, the course programme provided 30 ECTS credits, the basic requirement for a whole semester. For the Chinese students, who took part in the Module 1, the course provided credits according to the Fudan system. Based on the posi ve experiences and feedback, the course will be arranged again in the spring Nordic and Chinese students together in class This joint course extends and deepens a long standing coopera on between SIRPA and our Nordic partners. Dr Liu Chunrong, School of International Relations and Public Affairs Chinese Politics in a Globalized World, 2013 The course programme Chinese Poli cs in a Globalized World will next be taught during the spring semester 2013, between late February and mid-june. The basic course programme will be similar to the 2012 programme with three separate modules, making it altogether worth 30 ECTS credits. Students from all Nordic Centre member universi es are encouraged to apply. Primary target groups of the programme are advanced undergraduate students as well as students doing their masters. For more informa on and applica on guidelines, visit the Nordic Centre website Strong Basis for Future Cooperation While the Nordic Centre has been taking care of the administra ve aspects related to the course programme, two scholars from the University of Bergen and Fudan University, respec vely, have been in charge of the academic coordina on of the course. Hans Gaasemyr, PhD candidate and research fellow at the at the Department of Compara ve Poli cs, University of Bergen is one of them. According to Gaasemyr, running the course is a great priviledge and a con nuing challenge. Our overarching goals have been making this a most relevant, up to date and highly integrated course programme. Our biggest achievement may therefore be the triggering of interest and excitement from both Chinese and Nordic par cipants, he says. From the Fudan side, Dr Liu Chunrong from the SIRPA, School of Interna onal Rela ons and Public Affairs has been the person responsible for the programme. He sees benefits in the course programme beyond the educa onal aspect, too. While this course offers an unique learning exposure for students to be er understanding China and the world, it also serves as a construc ve base to build up interna onal research collabora on among the facul es, he says. Both Gaasemyr and Liu emphasise what a privilege it is to work with Chinese and Nordic students and scholars on equal foo ng. Building and con nuing a successful course programme will always be a challenge. China and world developments move ahead, and we have to make sure we offer our students the sound and comprehensive understanding that we promise. This challenge is also what makes par cipa ng in this programme truly rewarding, Gaasemyr adds. Both Gaasemyr and Liu are commi ed to making the joint course programme a reality in the coming years, too, and in the eyes of all par cipants the course should become a permanent part of the package of services the Nordic Centre can offer its member universi es. 2

This spring, Lappeenranta University of Technology was admitted to the Nordic Centre. On the second day of the meeting a Nordic Centre Strategy Workshop took place. In the workshop the new Nordic Centre Strategy for the years was accepted, and more detailed plans for the execution of the strategy were discussed. 6 Guest lecture by Mr. Bengt Johansson, Consul General of Sweden, May 13 Mr. Bengt Johansson, Consul-General of Sweden gave a farewell lecture at the Nordic Centre in mid-may. Mr. Johansson has served as the Consul- General of Sweden in Shanghai for four years and returns to Sweden this summer. The Nordic Centre is grateful for Mr. Johansson for the years he has been working together with us and wishes him all the best in his future endeavours. Guest lecture by Mr. Miika Tomi, UNESCO Youth Representative, May 17 Mr. Miika Tomi, speaker at the Third Interna onal Congress on Technical and Voca onal Educa on and Training (TVET) paid a short visit to the Nordic Centre in mid- May. Mr. Tomi gave a guest lecture on a topic highly relevant to all the students of the world, Fudan included. His lecture, How to solve the global youth unemployment, was well received by the large audience. Harry Martinson s Aniara Published in Chinese, May 18 The 1974 Nobel laureate Harry Martinson has been a well-known figure in the Nordic countries already for decades, but until now his works have not been translated into Chinese. Fortunately, this is not the state of affairs anymore. Mr. Chen Maiping, a Fudan alumni living in Sweden has translated Harry Martinson s Aniara, a futuristic poem from 1956 with a strong environmental message as well as allusions to the then ongoing Cold War. The Chinese publisher of the book, Century Publishing House, had the book publication event organized at the Nordic Centre. Participating in the event were guests from Sweden, including the chairman of the Harry Martinson Society in Sweden, Mr. Göran Bäckstrand and Harry Martinson s two daughters. The Consul-General of Sweden, Mr. Bengt Johansson as well as several Chinese authors, including Mr. Mo Yan, also attended the event, in addition to a large contingent of Chinese media. Göran Bäckstrand, chairman of the Harry Mar nson Society, addressing the audience. Nordic Film Festival Held at the NC, June Promoting Nordic culture is an important task of the Nordic Centre, and often that task is performed together with the national representatives of the Nordic countries in Shanghai. Cooperating with the Consulate-Generals of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, as well as with the School of Foreign Languages at Fudan University, four films from four Nordic countries were shown to the students of Fudan University in mid-june. Each film was imported from its home country by the Consulate-Generals, and members of the Consulate-Generals gave short presentations of them before the show. The films shown at the Nordic Film Festival were In A Better World (Denmark), Almost 18 (Finland), The Snow Cave Man (Norway) and Everlasting Moments (Sweden). All the films received a great audience and as the event was widely regarded a success, the main organisers immediately agreed to hold a similar event in the future, with perhaps some Nordic authors or film directors as special guests. Mannerheim Photos at Fudan in May June Baron C.G.E. Mannerheim, later the President of Finland, made an epic horseback journey through Central Asia and China in While his mission was of a military nature, he made extensive research work in the fields of archeology, anthropology, geography and so on. Moreover, he took more than 1300 photographs and had them sent to Finland. Some of the photos have been later digitalized and made into a photo exhibition. The exhibition gives unique insight to China s Western Regions during the last years of the Qing Dynasty. With courtesy of the Finnish Consulate-General in Shanghai, the Nordic Centre had the exhibition of some 60 photos on display at Fudan University for two weeks in late May and early June. The exhibition at the Guanghua Towers of Fudan University attracted lots of attention among the students of Fudan. 6
