2 2 3 BUSINESS & SOCIAL SCIENCES Business and Social Sciences has its roots in the business school tradition and in the field of business economics. This has gradually been extended to include interdisciplinary and more traditional social science disciplines such as economics, journalism, political science, law, and sociology. Hence, a range of activities and mergers have during the past ten years doubled the size of the faculty in terms of student population as well as core faculty members. At a national level the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences is well-known for its high academic standard and academic research, its attractive programmes, internationalisation, and its regional presence via its multi-campus structure. Innovative educational initiatives are developed to bring knowledge in place to create economic growth and jobs in the Region of Southern Denmark where the University is present. It is a key objective to ensure a sustainable development of Danish society by lifting the educational level also outside the large cities and supplying highly educated academic staff for private companies and public institutions. 4 6 7 Five Campuses one university BSS-SDU is a faculty at the University of Southern Denmark, one of the eight universities in Denmark which are all organised as independent and autonomous institutions. The University of Southern Denmark has more than 26,000 students and 3,400 employees. BSS-SDU accounts for almost 40 % of all full time and part-time students at the University. The University of Southern Denmark is today the 3rd largest university in Denmark, and BSS-SDU shares the top 3 of Business Schools in Denmark with Copenhagen Business School and Aarhus University. The University and BSS-SDU is a multi-campus institution. The main campus is located in Odense with its 18,500 full-time students. BSS- SDU is organised with departments at five of the University s six campuses (in Odense, Kolding, Esbjerg, Sønderborg, and Slagelse), which are all in a distance of km from Odense and can be reached easily by public or private transportation. 5 FOCUSED AND EXCELLENT RESEARCH Over the years, BSS-SDU has established a number of strong research areas including research groups with significant international impact including prioritised fields such as strategic organisation design, consumer behaviour, entrepreneurship and business innovation, accounting and finance, health economics, resource management, economic development, commercial law and publicprivate law interface, and welfare state studies. The Faculty s research strategy is linked to SDU s and BSS-SDU s overall objective to ensure a sustainable development in Denmark via a presence on campuses in five cities. The individual departments research profiles thus strive for focused and excellent research in the context of local/regional businesses, institutions, and organisations as well as global and national demands and trends. Direct and indirect bridging of research and practice, including co-creation, are means to push private and public businesses in the Region of Southern Denmark in a more innovative direction Peer-reviewed scholarly articles The initiative Research of International Standing is a BSS- SDU way of fostering research areas of excellence. 7 12 13 ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME PORTFOLIO The more than 10,000 students at BSS-SDU are distributed on bachelor programmes, master s degree programmes, diploma and professional master programmes, and each year approximately 25 PhD students complete a doctoral programme. BSS-SDU offers 13 bachelor programmes, 15 master s degree programmes, a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration and eight professional master s degree programmes, including an MBA, an Executive MBA in Change Management, and two public management programmes. Activating teaching and active learning A variety of learning and teaching methods are applied in all programmes. The major aim is that teaching methods reflect the specific learning objectives of the course, depending on the level of the programme. Whether classes are large or small, there is broad and increasing focus on overall planning of the teaching in individual courses, based on the founding principles for activating teaching and active learning. The ultimate goal is in-depth learning. 9 STUDENTS The University of Southern Denmark will boost learning through the strategic initiative "Students in Focus", the study environment and the level of services to maximise students prospects of developing their potential. Students should feel like team players in the university s life and activities and experience active teaching and learning in an inspiring study environment. 10 BSS-SDU INTERNATIONAL Internationalisation is important for BSS-SDU for several reasons: It is important that students Danish and foreign are stimulated academically by a curriculum characterised by international content and pedagogy, and that they profit personally and socially from studying in an international and culturally-diverse environment. This applies to BSS-SDU s international students who come here to study and to the Danish students who go abroad to study. For BSS- SDU s own students, who typically find jobs in SMEs in Denmark of which a majority are exporters, strong international exposure is a key to their success in the labour market. 12 22 23 CORPORATE CONNECTIONS BSS-SDU collaborates with a broad range of international private and public companies. In particular, BSS-SDU sees its role in facilitating and supporting the SMEs in the region. Close cooperation with cluster organisations and their corporations both in the region and nationally has been developed over the last four years, in collaboration with the Region of Southern Denmark and the Ministry of Business and Growth. Over the last five years BSS-SDU has in all been engaged with 80 corporate projects/sponsorships of which 42 are with private companies, 37 with public institutions (ministries, municipalities, regional business institution etc.) and five with trade associations. The Faculty is one of the most successful business and social science faculties in Denmark in terms of enrolment of industrial PhDs; at present 16 projects are performed for private companies and public institutions. Moreover, many more PhD projects are co-financed by sponsors from the corporate world. Corporate representatives in the above collaborations, e.g.:

13 24 25 FACILITIES BSS-SDU prioritises optimal facilities for students on all campuses, which includes attractive physical premises with study spaces for individual students as well as group work, and with proximity to researchers/teachers and student services. The Faculty s current physical framework is in general very up to date in terms of design and equipment. Classrooms and group rooms have the equipment expected at a modern educational institution, and study zones for individuals and groups are designed with an emphasis on atmosphere, function, and aesthetics within the given framework. Large construction projects are currently being build, and in a few years all five faculties in Odense will be gathered at one campus. In addition, a new University hospital will be completed in 2018 very close to campus. LIBRARY As part of SDU, BSS-SDU s students and staff may take advantage of central administrative services, including the University Library. The University Library s operating principle is academic focus, which means that the physical premises are divided into concentrated academic zones. Users can find the latest literature within their academic field, and work stations close by. All library services web, teaching, and personal service are available in English. In 2015, a new main library will open in new buildings with four sectional libraries within social sciences with the latest literature, a large and varied study environment, and a high degree of 24/7 access. 293,000 m 2 total SDU building area 1,6 million volumes, jurnals, etc. 66,000 electronic jounals 250,000 e-books 1,500 study places with 24/7 access

14 Funding BSS-SDU is primarily funded via government grants (ordinary funds) awarded in competition or according to political bindings.
