1 Dr. Charles Barnum Elementary School Improvement Plan The mission of Dr. Charles Barnum Elementary School, in partnership with our community is to provide a safe, nurturing and challenging learning environment so that all students develop to their fullest potential and become productive and responsible citizens. 1

3 GOALS: 1. The Dr. Charles Barnum professional learning community will increase student achievement in writing. 2. The Dr. Charles Barnum professional learning community will increase communication with the community and families in support of student achievement and behavior. 3. The Dr. Charles Barnum professional learning community will create a positive and proactive school-wide environment for all students. 3
4 Dr. Charles Barnum School Improvement Plan GOAL 1: The Dr. Charles Barnum professional learning community will increase student achievement in writing. Measurement: 80% of students in Grades K through 5 will increase one or more bands on the district writing performance task. Action that will Impact Student Achievement 1. Teachers will provide direct and explicit writing instruction daily. 2. Students will use writing in all content areas as a way to communicate about what they are thinking. 3. Teachers will use data teams to plan and differentiate instruction, review student data, develop assessments and rubrics. 4. Collaborative meetings will focus on writing instruction. 5. All teachers will share effective teaching strategies and best practices within and between grade levels. Results Indicators -daily schedules and lesson plans, walkthroughs, informal observations, instructional rounds -student work, lesson plans -weekly data team agendas and minutes -collaborative meeting agendas -staff, data team, department and collaborative meetings agendas and minutes 6. Teachers will use performance task assessments to guide instruction and progress monitor student mastery of skills taught. 7. Teachers will provide interventions and enrichment during the SRBI block. 8. Special education teachers will develop and implement targeted writing instruction to effectively meet their students IEP goals. 9. Professional development in writing instruction will be provided. -performance assessments -SRBI schedule; classroom, special education and intervention teachers lesson plans, groupings -IEP s, special esducation teacher lessons -GPS Professional Development March
5 Dr. Charles Barnum School Improvement Plan GOAL 2: The Dr. Charles Barnum professional learning community will increase communication with the community and families in support of student achievement and behavior. Measurement: 80% of Parent/Guardian responses will strongly agree/agree in all survey statements regarding communication on the annual spring Dr. Charles Barnum Parent Survey. Action that will Impact Student Achievement 1. The school and all professional staff will communicate with families on a regular basis. 2. Multiple opportunities for parents, community members and military personnel to become involved with the school will be scheduled 3. Increase parent, community and military volunteers Results Indicators -Tuesday newsletters, s, classroom newsletters/notes, school messenger calls, CB and teacher websites, conferences, teacher-home communication logs, parent survey results -Meet and Greet, Family Picnic, Curriculum Nights, Math Night, Cookies and P.J. s, Celebration of Arts and Wellness, Veterans Day Celebration, Field Day, Reading Challenge, Kindergarten Night/Orientation, Band and Chorus Concerts - volunteers in classrooms and assisting at school activities, military partnerships 5
6 Dr. Charles Barnum School Improvement Plan GOAL 3: The Dr. Charles Barnum professional learning community will create a positive and pro-active school environment for all students. Measurement: data. A 5% decrease in behavioral referrals that require administrator involvement from June 2014 to June 2015 as measured by SWIS Action That will Impact Student Achievement 1. Positive behavioral expectations and routines will be explicitly taught, modeled and reinforced by all staff members. 2. Monthly assemblies on the Pillar Character Traits will be held. Teachers will implement lessons specifically designed to teach our students about the particular monthly character trait we are emphasizing. 3. An individual and classroom positive behavior motivational plan will be used. (Individual SAIL Cards and classroom Sails) 4. Positive and specific feedback to all students will be given by all staff members. 5. All staff will report use the Dr. Charles Barnum Office Referral form to report problem behaviors. 6. All referral form data will be entered into SWIS. 7. The PBIS and C.B. Data Team will meet periodically to collect and review data, evaluate the effectiveness of the behavior program, provide feedback to staff and conduct climate surveys. Results Indicators -Monthly assemblies, classroom instruction, ongoing training and awareness at teacher and paraprofessional meetings -Monthly assemblies, lesson plans, classroom observations, bulletin boards -SAIL cards, Student Certificates, Classroom rewards, recognition at monthly assemblies -evidenced during instructional rounds, walkthroughs, observations -referral forms, SWIS data -SWIS data -meeting agenda and minutes, surveys 6
