Park Middle School has a tradition of excellence in academics, athletics and citizenship. Our faculty and administrative team work diligently to prepare students for their future educational goals. This handbook has been prepared as a guide for policies and procedures that will be followed during the school year. The handbook serves as a framework, but cannot cover every situation. In the absence of specific instructions, students should comply with the spirit of good citizenship and talk it over with any teacher. The staff is committed to involving parents in their child s success. Engrade is an invaluable method to communicate with teachers. Parents are encouraged to come to the school to set up a parent Engrade account. The PARENT LOGON will provide access to features that are unavailable to the students. Please note that Engrade applications must be presented in person and cannot be assigned without a valid photo ID. This will allow them time to make it to their lockers and avoid being tardy to class. Please remember that students who are in the building, but fail to get to class on time will be considered tardy. Students begin class promptly at 7:18. Every minute of instruction is important to a child s education, so Park Middle School stresses the importance of reporting to school on time. This develops life-long habits that will make our students successful in the future. The ONLY morning tardies that will be excused are those that are accompanied by a doctor s excuse. 3 STUDENT DROP OFF/PICK UP/TRANSPORTATION ARRANGEMENTS In every instance, a valid photo ID will be required in order to sign out a student. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Students that are being dropped off in the morning should be here no later than 7:10. Please use the designated drop-off areas. DO NOT drop off in the bus lane or the teacher parking areas. Parents should ONLY drop off on the same side of Park Avenue as the school, as a student crossing the street is a safety hazard. Please see that students exit the vehicle quickly and parents observe the 15 MPH speed limit. AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY: *The first dismissal bell is at 2:18 pm, this bell is for the following buses only: Bus #237-1st run students, Bus #14-93, & Bus # 208 *Second dismissal bell is at 2:24 pm for student walkers and car riders. * Remaining buses and student athletes will be dismissed at 2:30 by announcement. *For safety reasons, students will NOT be signed out from school from 2:00pm - 2:30pm. *Parent requests for transportation changes will not be accepted over the phone. All changes must be submitted in writing to the office prior to 1:00 PM. Bus Notes: Bus notes must be submitted to the office first thing in the morning. For bus notes that involve more than one student, a note will be required from the parent of each student. *Bus notes must contain the following information: Date, student name, name of the student that they will be riding home with, the bus number and a valid contact number for the parent. *Students will not be allowed to use the office phone to call home to request a note. *If the secretary is unable to reach a parent at the contact number provided to verify the note prior to 1:00 PM the student will be required to ride their normal bus home. For the safety of your child: Incomplete bus notes, bus notes that are not submitted with sufficient time to confirm, or bus notes that are unverifiable will not be accepted. The student will be sent home on the normal bus. ATTENDANCE OFFICE Attendance at school is fundamental to a successful education. The administration and staff request that students do not sign out during the school day. Every effort should be made to schedule appointments after 2:30 PM when possible. All students must be signed out through the main office. *For safety reasons students will not be signed out between 2:00 and 2:30. If your child has an appointment, please make arrangements to pick them up prior to 2:00 PM. *No deliveries will be accepted for students, including food, flowers, balloons, etc. *Telephones in the attendance office are NOT to be used by students except when calling home due to illness. *Phone messages will NOT be passed to students. *Students will not be called out of class to speak on the phone. 3 P a g e

4 ATTENDANCE POLICY The verification of an absence must meet the Excused Absences criteria outlined in the Raleigh County Schools Attendance Policy. Any absence not meeting those requirements shall be considered an unexcused absence. An excuse written by parents must contain the student s name, current date, the date and reason for the absence, and the parent/guardian's signature. Upon returning to school, absence excuses are to be exchanged for a class admit slip. Admit slips are obtained in the auditorium prior to the beginning of the student s first period class. For more information regarding excused and unexcused absences refer to the Raleigh County Schools Attendance Policy brochure. If your child is absent call , ext If a call has not been received, the school staff will make every effort to contact a parent on the day of the absence. STUDENT HANDBOOKS & AGENDAS The first copy of the student agenda will be provided to students free of charge. Students will be responsible for carrying the agenda every day. If the agenda is lost, the student will need to purchase a new one from the grade level team leader for $10. HOMEWORK REQUESTS Homework requests will only be taken if the parent requests work after 3 or more consecutive physician excused absences. Teachers also post homework on the Engrade website. The responsibility for making up work rests with students. A student is expected to make up all work and must assume the responsibility for requesting the assignments missed. GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT MOVEMENT FROM CLASS TO CLASS WILL BE AS FOLLOWS: 1. Hall movement shall be orderly walking and without horseplay. 2. Yelling and shouting are disruptive, and will not be tolerated. 3. Lingering in the halls is prohibited. STUDENT DRESS AND APPEARANCE The following shall be considered as inappropriate dress and appearance for students: 1. Shorts, dresses, holes in pants and other similar clothing shorter than fingertip length when arm is extended at side. 2. Mini-skirts, halters, tube tops, tops and blouses that expose the midriff or overly expose any other part of the body. Pajamas are not appropriate wear for school. Any type of leggings must be covered by a top that is appropriate in length. 3. Gloves, caps, hats, sunglasses or any type of headdress including bandanas and do-rags. 4. Purses cannot be larger than 18" X 18". 5. Clothing with any obscene, profane, suggestive or sexually explicit, racially or ethnically demeaning, tobacco, alcohol or other drug related clothing. 6. No backpacks of any type are to be carried during the day. 4 P a g e

5 BUS REGULATIONS 1. Students being transported are under the authority of the bus operators. 2. Riding the school bus is a privilege. Improper conduct on the buses will result in suspension from the bus. 3. Only regularly scheduled bus students are to ride the buses. 4. Be on time for the bus both morning and afternoon. 5. Remain seated while the bus is in motion. 6. Have written permission from the principal to leave the bus other than at home or school. 7. Loud or vulgar language is prohibited. 8. Students who ride the bus must get off in front of the school. Bus students are not permitted to go to other areas that are off limits. 9. Pupils who refuse to obey the directions of the bus operator promptly or refuse to obey regulations shall forfeit their right to ride on the bus. GUM/MARKERS Due to the issues related to the disposal/cleanup of gum and permanent markers, Park Middle School does not allow students to be in possession of either of these items. LOCKERS To offer adequate protection to students and their belongings, we provide lockers. This school will hold a master key to all lockers. The following rules apply: 1. Each student is assigned a locker. 2. All students are required to keep their locker locked. 3. No lockers are to be shared. 4. Lockers may be subject to search at any time. MONEY AND VALUABLE ARTICLES Do not bring large amounts of money to school. The school cannot accept responsibility for stolen money or other articles, including cell phones, ipods, etc. MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL If medications to manage a health condition are needed during the school day, the Raleigh County Medication Administration and Storage Policy is followed. All medications both prescription and non- prescription taken must be accompanied by a Medication Administration Form. This form is available in the main office. Parents may come to school to administer medication until the necessary form is on file. **All medications, prescription and over the counter, require a medication form completed by the parent and the physician. This includes asthma inhalers. All prescription medications must be brought in an original container labeled by the pharmacy. Over-the-counter medications must be in an original manufacturer container and may not be carried by the student throughout the school day. For the student's protection, always bring medication to the office for review by administration and/or school nurse. 5 P a g e

6 CAFETERIA AND LUNCH *RESTAURANT FOOD CANNOT BE BROUGHT IN FOR STUDENTS TO EAT AT LUNCH. *GROUPS OF STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO SIGN OUT FOR LUNCH. Students' behavior in the cafeteria is based on courtesy and cleanliness. The cafeteria tables must be clean and clear of trays. Trays should be emptied and placed in the designated area. Garbage cans are placed throughout the cafeteria for convenience and disposal. All students must remain in the cafeteria during the entire lunch period. Students will go through the cafeteria line and pay for their meals with their lunch card. Students are expected to bring their lunch cards every day. Food and drinks are NOT to be taken out of the cafeteria into the hallways. TEXTBOOKS / ipads Textbooks are loaned to students by the Raleigh County Board of Education. These books are issued and collected by classroom teachers. With the distribution of i-pads, i-pads will replace the need for textbooks to be carried home. See the Raleigh County Student i- Pad policy for more information. All students using computers at Park Middle must have a signed Acceptable Use Policy on file with their team leader before accessing school computers. LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER Damages to i-pads will be assessed to parents. The purpose of the library media center at Park Middle School is to provide information, services, and materials for faculty and students. In order to successfully provide these services for a facility of this size, it is necessary to be organized and systematic. This information should be useful to you in making the library a vital tool in your educational objectives. 6 P a g e

7 DISCIPLINE REGULATIONS It is the responsibility of the total school community to create an atmosphere that is conducive to teaching, learning, and living. Everyone in the educational process has the right to expect that the environment shall be safe, pleasant, and well organized. The climate should produce security and consistency through the establishment of reasonable rules and guidelines that require an interaction based on mutual respect and cooperation. The emphasis should be on courtesy, consideration, and respectful behavior at all times. RESPONSIBLE ROADRUNNERS One of the primary goals at Park Middle School is to develop responsible students. Therefore, we use the Responsible Roadrunners program. This program teaches students that there are consequences to actions. We also use this program to reward positive behaviors. Students receive Penalty Cards (PC) when they are displaying irresponsible behaviors. A Penalty Card is a 5-point deduction to a students conduct grade. Students are given 4 OOPS Cards each semester that may use to erase a Penalty Card, causing no deduction in conduct points. 8 WV BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY 4373 CLASSROOM AND SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS TO THE STUDENT: You have a right to know what is expected of you from the beginning of the term. We provide an educational foundation that supports students in their efforts to become healthy, responsible and self-directed citizens. The following are Park Middle School Classroom and School Expectations for each of your classes: 1. You understand that you have choices to make. Therefore, whatever you say or do is your own choice. You are responsible for the consequences of your words or actions. 2. Attend school faithfully, be in class on time, complete your assignments on time, and work to your full potential. 3. Behave in a manner that is not disruptive to classroom learning or the operation of our school. Show RESPECT to yourself and to others. 4. Obey your teachers, principals and others in authority. 5. Refrain from aggressive or threatening behavior towards fellow students, teachers, or other school staff. 6. Refrain from horseplay and/or other loud talking in the cafeteria at breakfast and lunch, and in the hallways during class changes. 7. The possession or use of any weapons, illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products are prohibited and will not be tolerated. Each incident will be handled pursuant to WV code. 8. No knife of any size is allowed at school.
