1 WILSON S SCHOOL Issue 126: September 11, 2009 WEEKLY UPDATE A Record Year It s excellent to be able to start the year by celebrating some really outstanding achievements, not least of which were those of our GCSE and A level students in the summer public examination sessions. We are used to seeing our students do very well, but this year s performance was genuinely exceptional. Both sets of results were our best ever by a significant margin. 94% of the grades obtained at A level were are at A or B (66% at A grade). At GCSE 87% of grades were at A* or A (52% at A*). You can see a break down of the results subject by subject on the school website. Making a Splash We are very proud indeed of the achievements of both sets of pupils and delighted to see some wonderful individual achievements. Nearly all our A level students were successful in gaining places on their chosen courses in some of Britain s best universities and our GCSE students have set themselves up brilliantly for success in two years time. It was also good to see the school placed so highly in the newspaper league tables being listed in the Times, Telegraph and Evening Standard among others as one of the very highest performing state schools in the country. You can find links to the online league tables on the website. Results like these are, of course, as much an achievement of the teachers as of the boys and I would like to thank them for the huge amount of hard work they put in to securing the boys success. Year 7 Parents Social Evening Just a reminder to new parents that the Yr 7 parents social evening is being held at the school from 7.30 p.m. on Friday 18th September. Information on the evening and a reply slip were sent out to new parents as part of the information pack last term and the majority of parents have replied. If you would like to attend and have not replied, please could you send back the reply slip to the school office by Tuesday 15th September. If you have mislaid your reply slip then please contact the school office directly to confirm your attendance. Calling all Houses! Remember that entries for the grow your own vegetables summer competition need to be handed in by the end of next week (September 18th). Take a photo of your organic vegetable that looks like an animal, put your name and form on it, and hand it (or alternatively the picture with details of your name and form) to Mrs Prestney or your Head of House. An excellent achievement. Well done. National Chess Champion Adam Taylor (8S) won the English Chess Federation U12 championships during the summer holiday. He was joint 1st with one other so they are joint national champions. He is our first national chess champion. A brilliant success, Adam. This achievement follows closely on that of Wilson s Chess Team which won the National Plate Competition at the end of last term. The National Plate, the trophy awarded to the winners of a competition for the runners up of all the regional schools competitions. If you want to learn how to play or hone your skills, go along to Chess Club. It s in Room 12 at lunchtime on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. is or

See Mr Englefield for more details. Old Wilsonians 5 A side On a very hot August day a staff team competed in the Old Wilsonians annual five a-side competition. They had a successful day, narrowly losing in the final when Mr Simmons (Head of Football) missed his penalty. Other players included Mr A Parkinson (1 goal), Mr Englefield (1 goal) and Mr J Parkinson. School Car Park Parents please do not park or wait in the school car park when dropping off or collecting your son from school. There are parking bays in Mollison Drive or spaces over the road in Link Lane. Lower 6th Parents Information Evening There will be an Information Evening for parents of L6 boys in the school hall on Monday 14th September at 7p.m. Prayer Group There will be a parents prayer group in the chapel on Monday 14th September at 8.00pm Apprentice Day Last Friday the whole of the Lower Sixth took part in an Apprentice day of induction activities in London. There were 20 teams who had to complete a myriad of tasks and be back in school by a specific time or else they were fired! The winning team consisted of Oliver Bishop, Rowan Brearly, Max Edge, Tim Hoe, Chris Hogg, Mark Mikheel, Ben Newman-Sanders and David Parke who have won a day at Chessington World of Adventures. Congratulations to all and well done! The Wilson s Orchard As part of our horticultural development at the school we are going to start an orchard on site. We would like to launch this exciting venture so that fruit grown on site will have a clear impact on the food available in the school canteen. We also want to make the most of our school grounds to the benefit of students and staff by using all the available space well. The orchard will also enable a more hands on approach to teaching life cycles in plants for science, not to mention many pruning techniques in gardening club. An opportunity to sample the harvest when the trees start producing fruit (2011) Access to a dedicated page on the school website looking at the journey from start to finish and updates each year on the progress of the site. There will also be a record on site of all the people who have sponsored the orchard. What trees are we planning on getting? We will be getting our trees from Chris Bowers & Sons who, whilst very competitively priced, have over the last 25 years built a very good reputation for themselves and when approached have been most helpful in guiding us in our endeavours. We will, with your help, buy a number of different varieties of apple and pear trees. The nursery has offered guidance about which trees are most compatible with each other in terms of pollination and will give us a spectrum of the enormous differences in tastes and textures available so that we can find something for everyone! Whether it is an apple or a pear you would like to sponsor, the trees will all be grown and trained in a cordon style. There is more information about this on the school website. Should you wish to make an extra special commitment to the orchard we would like to purchase some cooking apple Bramley trees to enable our catering team to produce recipes for the school canteen. It is an extra special year for the Bramley as the original tree, still alive in Nottingham, is 200 years old this year. These trees will not be grown as cordons as this is not an appropriate method of cultivation so they will be grown as free standing trees and will make the entrance way into the orchard. As such we would like to buy some more mature trees which obviously end up costing more. Each bramley will have an individual plaque with a short dedication written by the sponsor so if you would like to celebrate your time at the school, commemorate a loved one or just simply give an exceedingly generous gift then you can by sponsoring a Wilson s Bramley for 100. An application form is available to download from the school website. If you would like a paper copy or have any questions then please contact Mr Philiips. We hope to have all our sponsorship in by Monday 5th October. How can you help? We are looking for current students, staff and old boys to sponsor a tree in the orchard. This will cost: Apple tree Pear tree This pays for a bare rooted one year old tree from a specialist fruit tree nursery, compost to use in the planting hole to get the tree off to a great start, mycorrhizal fungi endorsed by the RHS to help plants form a successful root system and wire supports and protection for the trees. What will you get? A certificate to celebrate your sponsorship A photo of the new site after planting Entry to visit the orchard on specific dates for a tour explaining the varieties chosen and the pruning techniques

National Champion and UK No 1 Last Saturday Jacob Paul became National Champion in the U15B Pentathlon at the English Schools Combined Events Finals in Bedford. It was a nail biting day with Jacob achieving personal bests in four out of five of his events and the medal positions all being decided on the last event, the 800m race. Jacob went into the 800m in 3rd position, knowing that he had to beat the boys in 1st and 2nd place by 19 seconds and 1 second respectively in order to improve his own medal position. Jacob ran and won the 800 but it seemed a very long wait before the results were confirmed and he had in fact beaten the 2 leaders by 28 and 1.5 seconds to claim the gold medal with a victory overall by 12 points! His overall score of 3127 points has now given him the current number 1 UK ranking for U15B pentathlon and has placed him as number 10 in the all-time UK rankings. His results for individual events were: 80m Hurdles s New PB Shot m New PB Long Jump m New PB High Jump m 800m - 2:05.38 New PB Jacob s achievement on Saturday has also led to his selection to represent England in the Countries Combined Events Indoor International due to take place on 5th December in Glasgow. Congratulations on this fantastic achievement and good luck in Glasgow. Young Historian of the Year Congratulations to Benjamin Flook, 9C (pictured right), whose winning entry for the History Department s internal essay competition has gone on to come first in the Great War category of the national Young Historian awards run by the Historical Association. This took four and a half hard days on the second hardest route. Two days before them Roman Abramovich had to give up with altitude sickness! Proof if ever it was needed that Wilson s boys always make it to the top. Well done to them. Gardening at Wilson s Gardening at Wilson s Last year Gardening club started up on Thursday lunchtime and through the year we taught the students more about growing plants. We entered an RHS competition receiving a commendation. The support of parents and staff has been excellent and thank you to everyone who collected vouchers from Woodcote Nursery last term. Bhavraj Chana, Billy Thoroughgood and Mr Walters collected a cheque for which the Gardening club will use to buy seeds for next year. This year we have kicked off with our sponsored orchard, which has generated a good response. If you are interested in sponsoring a tree in the orchard please visit the website to download the application form or Mr Phillips at sp@wilsonsschool.sutton.sch.uk. Applications and money need to be in by 5/10/09 in order to get our request in for this year. Thank you to Mr Parker who has provided us with logistical help and some excellent ideas. He will be helping us again this year to initiate a school allotment. We harvested a modest crop of potatoes that Mr Pryse-Hawkins used for roast potatoes last Wednesday in the school canteen! If your son is interested in joining us please encourage him as we welcome all students at any level of experience. 4th Division Wilson s D vs Trinity D Wilson s drew 6-6

They are pictured here with the Mayor. Our two other winners, Adam Vallance and Keli Dusu, who has now left, were unable to attend. Keli, however, has also been shorlisted for the Black Child Achievement Award which will be presented at the House of Commons later today in a ceremony hosted by Diane Abbott. We wish him luck. Open Evenings Many thanks to all students and staff who helped out with the Open Evenings on Monday and Tuesday which went very well indeed. These are very significant events for the school as they are the only opportunity for those who are thinking of applying for Wilson s to have a hands on experience of the school. There were, if anything, even more passing through the doors than usual. The CCF managed the parking with complete professionalism and, once again, all the Year 7 pupils acted as tour guides, conducting themselves with amazing confidence and aplomb after only three weeks in the school. All departments received invaluable assistance from students of various ages. We received numerous comments informally on the evening and later by letter and about how impressed parents and prospective students were with the school and its atmosphere, with huge praise for the boys and their obvious pride and commitment to the school. Founder s Day We were pleased to welcome back Mark Chilcott to the school to speak at Founder s Day service on Tuesday morning. Mark was School Captain in 1979, was one of the new school s early stars in mathematics, which he read at Cambridge. He later became an Anglican priest and now works with the police force in Manchester. He spoke movingly about inclusiveness and tolerance reflecting on his own experiences at school. Many thanks to the school choir for the excellent performances and to all the readers for their contribution. The Medical Society The Medical Society was pleased to welcome back three Wilson s old boys who are just going into their second year reading Medicine at Imperial. They spent time giving advice about the application process, interview practice and gave some idea of what to expect in your first year. Grateful thanks go to Wing-Kin Liu, Hari Babu and James Samarasekara for a stimulating and very useful talk.

He won his age group and will collect his prize, an audio CD with his story recorded by professional actors, and a certificate, at the end of the month. Well done Dion. Young Enterprise 2009 This year s Young Enterprise Company Programme has started. A group of L6 students are now running their own companies to gain practical experience of business. At the launch evening, Claire Young, Raef Bjayou and Howard Ebison from The Apprentice were quizzed for advice on entrepreneurial success. Last year s Croydon Area winning team (including our students; Richard Serunjogi, Richard McMeekin and Bosun Lewis) also gave a presentation and some invaluable advice. This year s companies are now deciding on their products and services and will be finding out the consumer s response at the New Addington Trade Fair on Saturday 21 November. Gardening Club A huge thank you yet again from Gardening club to everyone who sponsored the planned school orchard. There has been a huge response, from students saving their pocket money, parents and staff. The members of the club will now be very busy hole digging for the near future. No more sponsorship can now be accepted, but all being well, there will be another opportunity to expand the planting next year. Once the orchard has been set up photographs and certificates will be sent to all those involved. Hans Woyda Inter-School Maths Team Wilson s convincingly beat Sutton High 54 to 26 in round 1 of the Hans Woyda Inter- School Maths tournament. The team, which has to include pupils from years 9, 11, 12 and 13, comprised Daniel Singarajah (U6), Alex McMillan (L6), Daniel Hunt (11C) and Liam Moloney (9B). The next match will be much tougher for us as our opponents, St. Paul s, have won the tournament for the past 5 years! Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Over 100 boys have successfully enrolled on the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh scheme. The club currently meets on alternative Thursdays after school where students learn how to complete the various sections of their log books, including skills, volunteering and physical activities. Preparations are underway for the first adventure, a circular ring walk on 16th December (not 9 December as previously advertised).

Travelling by Bus, Tram or Train Know where you are going and where you need to get off. Try and have your ticket, pass or change ready in your hand so your wallet is out of sight. If possible, wait for a bus, tram or train in a well-lit place near other people. On a bus, it is safer to stay on the lower deck and sit near the driver or conductor. On trains avoid compartments which have no access to corridors or other parts of the train. Try to sit with other people and avoid empty carriages. If you feel uneasy, it makes sense to move to another seat or carriage or speak to the guard or driver. If you feel threatened on public transport make as much noise as possible to attract attention. Walking to & from the bus stop/train station Think about the best route home and where you could go if you felt threatened. The best idea is to head for a place where you know there will be other people, for example a garage or shop. Try to use well lit, busy streets and avoid quiet or badly lit alleyways, subways or isolated parks or waste grounds Try to keep both hands free and don t walk with your hands in your pockets. If a car drives alongside you and someone inside, who you don t know well, starts talking to you turn and quickly walk away in the opposite direction. Never accept a lift with a stranger or someone you don t know very well even if you are cold, tired or you re late. Keep your mind on your surroundings remember if you are wearing a personal stereo or chatting on your mobile phone, you will not hear trouble approaching. If you think you are being followed, trust your instincts and take action. As confidently as you can, cross the road turning and looking to see who is behind you. If you are still being followed, keep moving. Make for a busy area and tell people what is happening. Consider carrying a personal safety alarm, which can be used to shock and disorientate an attacker giving you vital seconds to get away.

He gave a scintillating talk to a packed Lecture Theatre. His talk covered topics ranging from quarks to the largest magnet in the world, with everything in between. He passionately described the development of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN to an enthralled crowd of young scientists and their parents. He explained what the LHC is designed to discover and gave an account of the Higgs Boson and the Standard Model. Many questions were posed and answered enthusiastically. Dr Newbold followed the lecture with a brief Q&A session on university entry and interview technique for some of Wilson s best physicists. He fielded questions regarding white holes, superstrings, space-time and the conservation of momentum during black hole production in the outer atmosphere. Suffice it to say our guest left full of adrenalin and delighted at the response he received from Wilson s boys. With regard to those students who took the trouble to speak to him last night, he was impressed enough to say that he felt like offering them an undergraduate place at Bristol University on the spot. This lecture provided another opportunity for our great young scientists to shine. Dr Newbold left us in the comforting knowledge that the future of Physics is being built here at Wilson s School. Year 7 Enterprise Skills Day Our Year 7 s proved they are the future Sir Richard Branson and James Dyson. Mr Cross, our invited entrepreneur from Sports Xtra, set the boys a challenge of developing a new sport or game that would motivate children who don t always participate in sports activities. The winners were Green Gods from Greatcoat with their game involving badminton racquets and basketball hoops, an idea that Mr Cross, said could easily be taken forward. After some advice on presentation from Mrs Wood, an expert in sales pitching, the boys had to design a product that could be sold in school. Well done to Odyssey, the winners, with their idea of an intro pack for new students to the school. Over 1,000 house points were earned on the day, with the leaders being Camberwell who received 410 house points, Greencoat came second with 260, Brecon and Southwark came 3rd and finally came Hayes. Many new skills were learnt including team building, budgeting and idea generation which should help the boys throughout their time at Wilson s and beyond. Pictures of the winners and the day s activities are available on the school website. St Peter s College, University of Oxford Congratulations to Michael Kyriacou who came second in The Edgar Jones Philosophy Essay Competition run by St. Peter s College, University of Oxford. This competition aims to provide for students in Year 12 or the Lower 6th an opportunity to write about a philosophical issue and thereby, it is hoped, enable them to develop their abilities for independent research and thought and encourage them to apply for an undergraduate course with Philosophy as an element. Essays had to be a maximum of 2000 words in length and to be submitted in hardcopy. Our congratulations are also extended to Nihal Tharoor-Menon who had a highly commended essay in the same competition. This is the largest one day enterprise competition in the UK with over 65,000 people taking part last year. The secret challenge will be made available on the day and successful teams will need to develop a product idea that best meets the brief. Teams will not attend normal lessons but spend the day working on their product idea and sales presentation. In order to take part you need to form a team with a minimum of four and a maximum of six members, agree a team name and state what enterprising skills you believe your team will bring. Borough Championship Successes Wilson s staged the Borough Championships for the first time and the smooth running was greatly assisted by the A Level Physical Education groups who ran the event and did a first rate job. The Year 7 team were crowned Borough Champions with Ben Barry winning by nearly 100m. The Year 8 and 9 teams also won with Tom Holden in first place, Lakshman Niranjan in third and Tim Leake in fourth. The Year 10 and 11 teams came third, with Jordan Maurice in second place. In the sixth form race, Anthony Childs came second. This meant that Wilson s again won the overall title with John Fisher second. A large number of Wilson s boys will now be selected to run for the Borough in the Inter Borough Championship later in the year. Congratulations to Oscar Williams-Grut of last year s Upper Sixth who has been put on the shortlist of twenty artists whose work will be exhibited in the Saatchi Gallery from 3rd to 13th December 2009! Oscar s work, which was submitted for his A level is pictured above. Almost 1,800 schools have entered this competition so far. The highly respected panel of judges consists of The Sunday Telegraph s art critic, the artistic director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the CEO of Kids Company. To have reached the shortlist is a fantastic achievement for Oscar and we wish him all the best for the exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in December. There is a prize of 10,000 for the winning art department and a further 2,000 to the winning pupil, to be spent on art and computer equipment. Thomas & William Johnson Congratulations to Thomas and William who fought their way through to the semi-finals of the judo nationals. Both boys won bronze medals, fighting simultaneously on separate mats and finishing within nine seconds of each other! Thomas and William have both been invited to join the English Cadet squad. Having medalled at all their previous national point scoring competitions, their bronze medals in this competition earned them their selection to the Under 17 English Cadet squad. Badminton Champions Congratulations to William Gao and George Heineman both of whom became badminton champions recently. William followed his victory in the County singles by winning the County U.15 doubles title last week while George became U.17 County singles champion. An excellent achievement. Table Tennis The U19 team began their season with a cup game against Royal Russell and were comfortable winners by 8-0 with Michael Ho, Harry Frost, Chris Hogg and Yash Shukla winning all their games. Congratulations to Michael Ho who is now placed No 8 in the national U15 rankings.

ENERGY WORKSHOP There will be an energy workshop run on Tuesday lunchtime in S9 both weeks (17 and 24 November) where students can come and see our Eco-driver real-time electricity monitor in action, learn about energy efficiency and why it can help to combat our CO2 emissions and fill in surveys to have their say in what the school tries to do and even join our eco-schools team. We hope that we can inspire the students to practise what they learn at school. We can t resist telling you just one statistic: In the home 14% of your energy bill is from lighting, imagine how much it is in a large building like our school. English Schools Swimming Championships Congratulations to Hiroki Harazawa who swam in the recent ESSA Championships at Crystal Palace. He was a member of Division 11 team (Surrey & Kent) who together achieved a collection of 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals.

20 Issue 134: November Hans Woyda Competition Wilson s 35 - St. Paul s 30 The Hans Woyda Team achieved an impressive victory over St. Paul s school who have been winners of the competition for the past five years. Daniel Singarajah (U6), Alex McMillan (L6), Daniel Hunt (11C) and Liam Moloney (9B) all made fantastic contributions to secure the win. The students worked exceptionally well together in the team round, putting them five points ahead in the middle stages of the competition, St. Paul s clawed back to just one point behind as the match entered the final stage but Wilson s held their nerve in the high pressure race round to achieve a convincing win. Well done to all involved, including Dr Cooper for preparing the team so well. Senior Team Maths Challenge Our congratulations to the Senior Maths Challenge Team, consisting of Daniel Singarajah, Timothy Kasoar, Annoj Inpanathan and Mayghal Vijapura who came second in the Kingston Regional Final, a few points behind Hampton School and ahead of Kingston Grammar. Year 8 Dragon s Den Competition Congratulations to 8B who won the Year 8 Inter-Form Dragon s Den competition which took place just before half term. The winning team of Lateef Hassan, Harry Ingamells, Max Bruggy and Matthew Hill proposed the idea of an additional application for an ipod. The judges were suitably impressed by their product. Other new innovations suggested by Year 8 pupils included a pair of vacuum shoes to climb walls, a hat which dispenses shampoo in the shower, a pen which acts as a personal organiser and an arm-chair which dispenses food! Much fun was had by all and in particular thanks go to the judges who were Jonathan Helps (U62), Jinesh Patel (U66), Miss Keen and Mr Jones. Switch Off Fortnight at Wilson s As an Eco-school we are always looking for ways to improve our environmental impact. One of the key ways to do this is by using energy more efficiently. Starting next Monday 16 November we are running an activity led by eco-schools and EDF Energy s The Pod. We have been monitoring our energy use since early October and we are going to see what happens when we focus all our efforts on being as efficient with electricity as we can. Boys will be encouraged to take notice of where we are wasting electricity and try to do something about it. Now in school that may seem difficult, but we have asked all boys to politely ask staff if they would like the lights switched off in the classroom at the end of lessons, particularly at break, lunch and the end of the day. In just one lunch time the Eco-schools team switched off all the classroom lights and we saw a measurable drop in energy use as is shown in the graph below. kwh A graph to show change in kwh use over a number of days from 13:00-14:30 13:00 13:30 14:00 1/2 hour time slot (13:00-13:30 etc) Column 1 and 4 is a normal school lunch time. Column 2 is our activities day when at least 1/3 of boys were off site. Column 3 is a Sunday. The final column is the lunchtime with the lights switched off, as you can see we brought the energy use down to below that used on our activities day. We will then look at how much energy we have saved over the fortnight and let everyone know. Design a Poster Competition 15/10/ /10/ /10/ /10/ /10/2009 We are running a competition to design a poster to go on the back of the classroom doors encouraging everyone to remember to switch off lights, computers, amplifiers and projectors. There are 3 categories, junior (7-8), senior (9-13) and staff. A winner from each category will be chosen and their poster printed, laminated and put up around the school. They will also gain house points for their respective houses. The entry form is available on the school website to download. Hand drawn or computer generated posters are fine but they must be A5. Jack Petchey Award Congratulations to James Harris (11G) who was unanimously voted the winner of the Jack Petchey award for the month of October. James was voted for because of his charity work with the homeless and for the hours and hours of work that he is putting into the choreography for the school play.

Over 3 million people are expected to take part in events all over the world. The teams were required to create a product that had a local influence which could also demonstrate a significant positive impact on the environment. Ideas the boys developed included texting to plant a tree, a restaurant that only used local produce and a race track that used the famous locally built Caterham cars fuelled with used vegetable oil from local restaurants. Well done to team Spark whose entry of the Caterham car has been put forward as the school entry to the regional finals. The winning team consisted of: William Ries, Sam Giles, Tom Johnson, James Lawton, Scott England and Thinesh Thayabaran. LBS Swimming Championships 2009 Congratulations to Alex Hill (11B) who won a gold medal for the Boys 14/15 3 lengths Breaststroke (B Grade) at the London Borough of Sutton Swimming Championships 2009, held at Cheam Leisure Centre on Thursday 12 November. Restraint shown in Pic n Mix Debate Wilson s School Debating Society notched up a win against St. Philomena s School in the first round of the UN competition last night. U6 veteran debaters Andrew Malcolm-Neale and Michael Kyriacou delivered a flawless performance against two sixth-formers from St. Philomena s with the boys supporting the motion that too much choice was a bad thing. Healthcare, life and death, pensions, choice paralysis and the ridiculous array of 187 types of tea bags was the meat of the boys arguments; this heady mix sprinkled with searing philosophical, sociological and psychological theories that would have made their teachers proud. The competition, well... chose less theoretical arguments, which however, were delivered very persuasively by a young lady who was a finalist last year. One could never have too many Pic n Mix sweets, cocktail prawns being her favourite, a topic eulogised over for at least two minutes. Other must-have choices to be defended were prom dresses or cheeses for her father. Wilson s boys managed to feign interest (well Andrew did) until she expressed a desire to emulate Hannah Montana - and be Superman...?? Michael, under strict orders not to mention drugs or guns and to structure his points, needless to say produced a heart-stopping, on-the-edge, show-stopping extravaganza that the judges loved. She could have as many prom dresses as she liked - but one must always think of the consequences on others, he concluded. An exemplary performance, which inspired the lower sixth supporters. Year 9 Language Trips The German and French departments have sent letters home via the boys about trips which they are organising, The trips take place during Activities Week. In order to benefit from any discounts available the initial deposit needs to be sent to the travel agencies as soon as possible. The Modern Foreign Languages department believes the trips to be of great value whether or not your son has regularly gone to the country concerned because one of the purposes of the visits is to use the appropriate language in context. Please send in the reply slips and the money as soon as possible. Feel free to contact Mr Winstone about the French trip and Mr McDonald about the German trip if you have any questions.

Our congratulations also go to Gregg Pettifor on his twenty first goal of the season, shown here with Wilson s winning 5:0 against Riddlesdown and maintaining the 1st X1 s unbeaten record. Thomas and William Johnson Well done to Thomas and William Johnson who have been selected for the England Talent Programme. This programme is aimed at developing the top U17 and U20 athletes towards Olympic selection by providing them with extra support. Following an assessment day in Sheffield 10 days ago, both boys have now been selected for additional support beyond their England Cadet status. We will be watching their progress with interest and wish them both well. Shoeboxes for Christmas Presents Year 8 and Year 9 students took part in a national charity event organised by Mustard Seed Relief Missions. Each group of students decorated a shoebox and filled it with gifts as a Christmas present for a child less privileged than themselves. The shoeboxes were collected by the charity on 12th November for distribution to orphanages, hospitals and refugee camps in Bosnia, Croatia, Romania and the Ukraine, among other countries. The students made thoughtful and considerate choices and the two year groups provided a total of 58 generously-filled boxes. Senior Maths Challenge Our results in the Senior Maths Challenge, which is aimed at those studying A Level maths, have once again been outstanding. Sixteen pupils reaching the elite Gold Level, 46 Silver and 28 Bronze. Top score in the school was by Daniel Hunt in 11C, closely followed by Daniel Singarajah and Jegadeesh Sithamparathas (both in the Upper Sixth) and Matthew Rogers (11S). All four have qualified for the prestigious, and very tough, British Maths Olympiad and we wish them well.

PRIMARY MASTERCLASSES Wilson s Mathematics Department had the pleasure of hosting the Primary Maths Masterclasses again this year. The classes began in September and ran until the end of November. They were attended by Year 6 children from Foresters Primary School, Amy Johnson Primary School and St Elpheges RC Junior School. The children, who were very able mathematicians, enjoyed studying areas of mathematics outside their normal curriculum and even learnt a new way of multiplying using Napier s bones! Our own lower sixth students assisted in the running of the classes, providing support and encouragement to the younger children, and even learnt a thing or two themselves! In the final session the Year 6 students took part in the 2009 Primary Mathematics Challenge in which they put up a good performance. Many congratulations to all the boys who took part in yesterday s excellent Christmas concert in aid of St Raphael s Hospice. We heard really impressive performances from a whole range of ensembles with highlights too many to number. It was really excellent to see so many talented musicians taking part and coming together to revitalise and renew many of our existing ensembles. We are working, under the formidable leadership of our Music Department, led by Director of Music, Ms Bright and our new Advanced Skills Teacher, Mr Lissimore, to move music to a new level of excellence and last night s performance moved us tangibly forward towards that goal. Thank you to the boys for their participation, to the lighting team for transforming the appearance of the school hall, to the parents for their support and to Mr Lissimore and Ms Bright for their energy and enthusiasm in putting on a very professional concert. A Dazzling Debating Debut from the Lower Sixth Congratulations to David Parke and Jack Di Lizia on a a fantastic debating debut. The L6 boys competed in the ESU debate at Ibstock Place School on Monday evening. Opposing the motion This house believes that school exams are getting easier - a very emotive and topical subject - the boys stood their ground against our cometitors, Heathlands. Not only did the boys deliver a confident and dramatic performance, using poignant POIs to expose the weaknesses in their opposition s speech, they destroyed challenging questions from the audience with quick thinking and wit. In the three debate competition, the boys gained a commendable position as runner up. The feedback from the judges was, that with a few tweaks, in their opinion, Jack and David as a team could be an unstoppable force. Well done! Jack Petchey Award for November Kes Daood of 11G has been nominated for the November Jack Petchey Award. Kes runs three clubs at the school during the lunch hour, thus improving the range of activities available to pupils during the lunch break. The first club, WASA (Wilson s Aeronautical and Space Administration) until now, has run since the end of year 9. He also organises the Lower School Debating Society, which is attended by 30 boys on a weekly basis. He has also managed to find the time to set up a laser quest club. The committee believe that he has tried to improve the school community with high levels of success. Congratulations and well done to Kes.

BEGINNING OF TERM - 5TH JANUARY 2010 The first day of term after the Christmas break is Tuesday 5th January. The school day begins at the normal time with registration at 8.30 a. m. and first lesson at 8.35 a.m. SCIENCE LECTURE - 2ND FEBRUARY 2010 UK Biobank: Improving the Health of Future Generations Chief Scientist Dr Tim Sprosen and Head of Biobank Communications, Andrew Trehearne will be visiting Wilson s on Tuesday 2nd February to give a lecture on their research project Biobank from 3.45 p.m. until 5.00pm. This is a major research initiative to investigate the extent to which health outcomes are determined by lifestyle or genes. This lecture will be of particular interest to biology students and any students thinking of studying medicine or a biology related science at university. If you wish to know more, please take a look at the following link: ukbiobank.ac.uk. STUDENT RESEARCH English Language A Level pupils research Child Language Acquisition in situ. Three A2 English Language boys have spent two days at High View Primary School carrying out research into how young children acquire language as part of their course. The theories of Noam Chomsky, Piaget and Lenneberg were tested through research activities and observation of children at the school. The three students, Will Payne, Harry Gartell and former pupil at the school, Ben Pavesi, thoroughly enjoyed their time there and saw at first hand the differing progress made by young children trying to master English. OXFORD DEBATING WORKSHOP REVEALS KEY STRATEGIES FOR COMPETITION Eleven U6 and L6 members of the Wilson s Debating Society participated in an Oxford University Debating Workshop last week at Wimbledon High School. The first round of the competition, a British Parliamentary style debate in which four teams participate but only one is the winner, will take place in early February. Wilson s School have entered three teams. The workshop included a mock debate on the motion that This House would ban private schools. With hardly any encouraging, David Parke, Jordan Childs and Alex Dodds volunteered and they were paired up with other pupils. While no overall winners were announced, all three Wilson s boys were impressive; in particular, Jordan Childs, a veteran of the Cambridge Debating Competition, sounded as if he had been doing this for years. Similar style debates will be run in the New Year by the school society. Wilson s Carol Service - Monday 14 December All those who attended the Carol Service at Croydon Parish Church this week commented on the festive atmosphere and the wonderful singing of the choir and playing of the brass ensemble. The mince pies and mulled wine served afterwards were an additional bonus. Thanks go to Mr Lissimore for organising the event and to Mr Pryse-Hawkins for organising the refreshments and taking the photographs and to the parents for their support. Young debaters save the world from Torchwood s 456 Aliens Lower school debaters from years 7 to 11 showed their prowess in the first internal Wilson s School Debating Society competition. Organised and led by Year 11 Kes Daood and assisted by Darren Mindham, five teams of up to four boys debated how to respond to a request from Torchwood s 456 aliens that Earth select 10% of their children to send to their deaths or the world will be destroyed. The choices were stark: declare war; try a peaceful approach or select children in a variety of ways. The judges, Mr Charnock, Ms Daly and U6 debating society winner, Andrew Malcolm-Neale, were very impressed by the arguments. Notable performances included those by Harrison Gower, Kieran O Donnell, Will Ries and Beojan Stanislaus to name a few. The winning team was led by Brandon Lundini and Simon Loftus and supported by Jacob Borg and Calum Perera. Wilson s pupils act their way to the Great Shakespeare Debate final Three U6 English students are in the finals of the English Speaking Union Great Shakespeare debate to be held at Stratford-upon-Avon in March Log on to Youtube and search for Great Shakespeare Debate, then Wilson s School to see the video that clinched their place. The brief was to produce a video debating one of the following subjects in Shakespeare s plays: Love; Appearance and Reality; or Ambition and also comment on how Shakespeare is taught at A Level. The U6 team led by Phil Coales included Michael Kyriacou and Theo Botsford. Ben Pavesi filmed and edited the video and Ms Daly helped. Reflecting the new AS English Literature recreative option where pupils imagine a response by one of the characters in the dramas studied, the team set up a police investigation of Emilia, Iago s feisty wife in Othello. Emilia, played by Theo, gave a touching monologue before being grilled mercilessly by the duo of bad cop Michael and good cop Phil about Iago s role and motivation in the murder of Desdemona by Othello. Out-takes, giving a true insight into the filming will follow.
