Kia ora whanau Welcome to our March newsletter. Within you will find results and photographs from our recently held annual Swimming Sports and Athletics Sports. Both whole school events were highly successful, and certainly a sight to behold with the young women of the college entering into the spirit of things, regaled in resplendent house costumes and giving their full voice in support of their peers. The events give us an opportunity to come together in support of our athletes who continue to perform at incredibly high levels of ability, and to benefit from the participation in house events for the good of something that is bigger than one s self prized house points; and for the simple joy of taking part. Attendance was significantly up at both events this year, and I congratulate the students and their families in supporting these marquee events on our school sporting calendar. I received a good deal of positive feedback from visitors to the events regarding the enthusiasm and enjoyment being had, and by the obvious support and encouragement students have of one another. This is Living the Mission through Manaakitanga. Ka pai. This week we held our annual celebration of Excellence Assembly, in which we acknowledge the students who received Excellence Endorsements in their previous year s NCEA qualification. Here at Manawa Tapu we have an established tradition of high levels of academic success was another stellar year, with a set of academic results that reflect the efforts and attitudes of the learners, their teachers, and the supportive families who invest a great deal in ensuring their children have every possible chance of achieving to the Pictured: Guest Speaker at Excellence Assembly, Emma Crowe, 2011 Head Girl, with Paula Wells best of their abilities. Not only did we maintain exceptional levels of achievement across Levels 1, 2 and 3, with our pass marks well above those of Decile 8-10 schools nationally, we experienced a significant increase in excellence endorsements across all three levels also, most notably at NCEA Level 3. It was pleasing also to report that we had five NCEA Scholarship passes, three to last year s Dux, Kate Byrne, one to our Proxime Accessit, Anna Van Hattum, and an Outstanding Scholarship to our then Deputy Head Girl Special Character, Margaret Wells. 2 PAGE 2 Principal s Peace Cont. SSSchoSol News Meeting the needs of our learners, and that of our community, with a modern future-focussed curriculum is something that we need to be continuing to improve on, and a Head of Faculty led inquiry throughout the course of this year will begin to determine its future direction. It s an exciting time as we consider whether we are truly meeting the needs of learners who will leave the college at the end of their secondary schooling to join a rapidly changing world, undertaking employment in jobs and industries that haven t even been invented yet. Saturday the 25th of March is our bi-annual college Gala Day. A very small but highly committed group of PTFA members and helpers have been working hard at gearing up for the day, and I know that they would greatly appreciate any further offers of assistance. Please support this group of volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to raise money for the extras that our students benefit from. This year s Gala Day proceeds have been earmarked to contribute to the astro-turf project, which will see the court areas surrounding the Events Centre turfed and lit for the benefit of a multitude of sports and activities, and to enhance the delivery of the Physical Education curriculum. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to coercing you into buying a quick-fire raffle ticket on the day! Swimming Sports Champions pictured with Mrs Wells, from left; Emma Shotter; Year 8 Champion, Ilana Kerr; Junior Champion, Mrs Wells, Aimee Daniels; Senior Champion, Lania Hancock; Intermediate Champion and Tara Shotter; Year 7 Champion We have entered into the season of Lent, marked by an Ash Wednesday liturgy here at the college. We gave our Lenten promise: we will try to follow Pope Francis call to find Jesus in the face of others, in their faces and in their pleas. We will try to remember that when we encounter our sisters and brothers, wherever they may live, we encounter the face of Christ. I have challenged our students to see the face of Christ in one another, right here. If we are living the Manawa Mission expectation of Manaakitanga we respect and love one another. We do not strip anyone of their respect and dignity, regardless of their appearance, their ethnicity, their accent, their background, their interests, their intellect, their family or who they choose to be friends with we are all human and we are flawed. We all make mistakes and we all get things wrong. However, we are blessed that in this season of Lent, we are encouraged to speak to God, to say sorry, and it is in his forgiveness that we are able to try to be different, kinder to one another. Right here, in the place where we are. Manawa Tapu Paula Wells Principal Hope Excellence Acceptance Respect Together

Be at peace with one another. SchoSol Catholic Chapter News P A G E 3 In his message for Lent 2017, Pope Francis reminds us that we should heed the Scriptures and treat each human person we encounter as a gift. Lent is the favourable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbour. Each life that we encounter is a gift deserving acceptance, respect and love. The word of God helps us to open our eyes to welcome and love life, especially when it is weak and vulnerable. As we start the journey of Lent, with its emphasis on prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we have a chance at a new beginning in our own lives. The theme that Caritas New Zealand has chosen for this Lent is a phrase from Psalm 27: Your face, Lord, do I seek. This phrase reminds us that when we encounter our sisters and brothers, wherever they may live, we encounter the face of Christ. We give up some things that we might want, so that other people can have what they need. In particular, this Lent, we are drawing attention to the needs of our Pacific brothers and sisters suffering the adverse effects of climate change, and in need of food and water security, and a safe place to live and earn a living. Pope Francis is calling on all of us, as members of one human family, to change the way we are living so that together we can care for our common home. The environmental changes we make now, will ensure that vulnerable Pacific communities can survive, and also that future generations will have a reasonable quality of life. On Tuesday March 7th, a group of twenty-one Year 12 students travelled to Palmerston North to participate in the Caritas Leadership Training Day. The focus for the day was environmental justice and climate change. By participating in a very active simulation game, the students were able to experience the impact of climate change on families in Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. They have become much more aware of our responsibility to be protectors of one another and of our common home. Catherine Landrigan Director of Religious Studies Our Lenten Promise Our Lenten Promise at Sacred Heart Girls College, during this season of Lent, we will try to follow Pope Francis call to find Jesus in the face of others, in their voices and in their pleas. We will try to remember that when we encounter our sisters and brothers, wherever they may live, we encounter the face of Christ.

School Board of Trustees News P A G E 4 Every time I drive through the gates of Sacred Heart Girls College New Plymouth (SHGC), I feel a real sense of community and whanau the joy of belonging and being a part of and able to serve our Manawa Tapu school and faith community. We are the baton holders, passed on to us by community past. We are entrusted as kaitiaki of the present and future whanau who do and will also pass through those same gates. The spirit of true selfless generosity and giving was embodied in the seeds sown by Euphrasie Barbier and our Sisters of the Mission many years ago. A vision that has been realised, through the carrying of the baton by generations past in creating the wonderful spiritual and physical place we know as SHGC today. I am often reminded of the parable of the Vineyard workers. SHGC is the vineyard. Each of us are called to work in the vineyard, so that by the end of the summer we may all enjoy the fruits of the harvest. The harvest is why we send our tamariki to SHGC, knowing that by belonging to this community we are giving our children the best possible opportunities to develop and succeed as confident Wahine Toa. Our focus must always be on sustaining the taonga we have received and nurtured for our children, ensuring that the baton is passed onto future generations. I use the vineyard parable as it is only through the sense of continuing community generosity and support, via your many commitments to donations of money and/or time that enable us to continue the works of Euphrasie Barbier. Without this caring sense of community, helping our brother and sister by sharing the load, the values of Maanakitanga which we encourage our daughters to embrace through our Manawa Mission values are empty. In this time of Lent we are also called to be generous of spirit, to reflect on how we can also support our school community. At the end of the day, the many workers involved in the harvest will bear great fruit! Many blessings Stephen Hill BOT Chairperson Mike King Mike King spoke to a senior school assembly On Wednesday 8 March. He said not to compare yourself to others, and be the best you can be. He also told us stories from his life, and told us not to be afraid to ask for help. Alexandra Carr Year 12

PAGE 9 TOPEC Year 10 School News TOPEC EXPERIENCE Overnight: Year 13 perspective by: Sahara Hill, Sophie Jury and Taila Hurley Taila went to Stoney River with Josh and the Wahine Toa group. We drove to Stoney River then tramped for 30 minutes on a track and 10 minutes in the bush. We got to our campsite and each chose spots to erect our tents or fly (whichever Josh had given). Jobs assigned to groups were fire lighting, dinner cooking and clean up. River water was boiled and used for dinner. A bonfire was made and we had a quiz where we guessed the answers. After that we roasted marshmallows over our fire, then we just sat around learning about the stars. Sophie stayed right beside the Waiwhakaiho River up the mountain. We left TOPEC around 2.30pm and got to the start of the walk 20 minutes after. We tramped on track for about 50 minutes and went off track after that. It took the girls forever to set up camp and start cooking but when the ball was rolling everything fell into place. A bonfire was set up and everyone was talking about 127 hours with Seton. It was a very quiet night and everyone was in bed early. We headed out of the campsite at 9am to walk back through the river. Everyone got their shoes wet and they couldn t stop complaining. Then we got into the van and headed back to TOPEC. Sahara stayed across the river at Everett Park with the Manaakitanga group. We departed from TOPEC around 2.40pm. We walked on track for about 10 minutes or less and had to cross the river with a raft to get to where we would be staying for the night. The girls did well at setting up their camp and lighting a fire to cook dinner. After it was dark we went to a cave where we saw glow worms. After everyone got settled around the camp fire we told stories, sung songs and had a great time. We all got into bed late after a fun night around the campfire. In the morning we packed up our gear and cleared the area of rubbish. We started to cross the river around 9.30am ready to head back to base after a fun night out. While crossing the river, Liana fell out of the raft while we were going back across and had to swim the rest of the way. It was a funny experience to watch. 10 SHGC Senior Jazz Band After a gap of 2 or 3 years, we now have a Jazz Band. We are grateful to Mr Robert Greenfield who is the leader of this young, keen group. Jazz is a different way to play music, as improvisation, solos and playing by ear are encouraged. We are working towards playing in Hamilton at the Waikato Festival in Term 3, and at the local Jazz Club in September. New members always welcome. School Music News P A G E 1 0 Taranaki Jazz Club The Jazz Club meets on the first Sunday of each month, 4.30pm, at the Mayfair. Student tickets are only $4 a bargain. See Mrs Hunter if you want to come along, so I can book seats for the SHGC group. Sunday 5 th May was a great concert by Taranaki s own the RITZ BIG BAND. It was great to see at least 5 local music teachers playing in the band, alongside SHGC student Brianna Breeze on alto saxophone. Well done Brianna! Itinerant Music Lessons These are now up and running, involving over 150 students. This is an opportunity offered by the Ministry of Education, allowing students to learn an instrument in a group at school. We are very privileged to have an excellent group of teachers, who are very experienced in their different instruments. Students need to ensure they attend every lesson, or let the teacher know if they can t make it. Ensuring you spend some time practising what you have learned will help you make steady progress, and enjoy your lessons more! Students are also encouraged to be a part of one of the many instrumental or vocal groups available here at school. Don t forget to thank your teachers! A highlight of the musical calendar is the Itinerant Concert held at the end of the year I look forward to seeing your amazing progress!

Trebles This is our awesome Junior Choir here at Sacred Heart. This year we have a new leader Philippa Drinkwater, an ex-sacred Heart girl who has recently returned to New Zealand after living in London. She is also setting up a studio as a Singing/ Vocal teacher. We meet every Tuesday at lunchtime in the Music room and welcome new members. Our first gig for the year will be singing at the Opening Ceremony of the Relay for Life, with more events coming up in Term 2. Well done girls on a great start to a fabulous year! School Music News P A G E 1 1 Congratulations Lisa Rangi has been working at Sacred Heart for around 6 years as our singing teacher. She teaches here at Sacred Heart, as well as Fitzroy School, and is also very busy with private students. She performs quite regularly, being a part of the recent Mamma Mia show in New Plymouth, singing with Bryony Williams at the end of last year, and also performing at Christmas at the Bowl. Lisa has been a member of NEWZATS (NZ Association of Teachers of Singing) for a number of years, but this year has been appointed president, taking up the role in April. This is a huge honour and we are thrilled for Lisa. Congratulations! Concert Opportunities We are very lucky in Taranaki to have a vibrant music scene, covering all styles and tastes. I often have tickets available, so listen to the notices, or come into the Music room and ask. Coming up are small Chamber Music concerts, Orchestras and a couple of Operas. We recently attended an amazing concert, along with students from Opunake High School, featuring the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Modern Māori Quartet an absolute treat.

School Music News P A G E 1 2 Fusion Concert Band This combined band with FDMC is getting underway on Monday March 20 th, from pm in the Performing Arts Centre. We have a new conductor this year, Mr Robert Greenfield, who is also taking our Jazz Band. Any instruments welcome see Mrs Hunter if you are interested. Theory Club This is a new opportunity this year, for Music students to extend their theory knowledge. They are working towards doing Royal Schools of Music Theory exams, which are needed if students wish to sit more advanced practical exams. They meet on Tuesday mornings and Friday lunchtimes in the Music room. Any students who would appreciate help with their theory are most welcome. A Capella Choir This is a new venture here at SHGC, led by Laura Griffiths. A Capella singing seems to have taken off after the making of the Pitch Perfect movies, and involves singing in harmony, with no instruments. We have a keen group of students, learning how to listen and blend together. We look forward to their first performance. Laura Griffiths A huge congratulations to Laura on again (for the 3 rd time!) being selected to attend the A Capella Academy in Los Angeles, run by the Pentatonix. It is great that the skills she is learning in Los Angeles she is now passing on to the singers here at SHGC. She will be travelling to Los Angeles in July.

School Music News P A G E 1 3 Other Musical Happenings A Year 8 Rock Band is now underway, organised by 2 very talented, keen students, working towards the Junior RockQuest competition BandQuest. Our Senior Choir is in the process of reforming into a different group, with the students leading the new direction. We have a good core of students but are open to anyone who wants to join us. Practices are on Thursdays at lunchtime. UN Aotearoa Youth Conference Emily Hutching-Gough Emily Hutching-Gough has been selected to attend a UN Aotearoa Youth Conference in Auckland in the April holidays. It runs for 4 days at Auckland University, and includes a range of speakers. Emily will also be involved in the Hauora focus group, a great opportunity to share ideas. Congratulations on your selection for this exciting conference. 15 Sports News Sports Canoe Polo News P A G E 1 5 The Senior SHGC team travelled to Levin last weekend to compete in the Central West Regional Schools competition. They played three hard fought Pool games against Palmerston North Girls A, Otaki and Feilding High School B teams. They then played the cross over against Otaki, coming out with a win. This made them 6 th overall out of 8 teams (Division 1 and Division 2 combined). While the tough Pool play meant that this year the team did not automatically qualify for the Nationals tournament, their skill and stamina did not go unnoticed and they have been awarded a wildcard entry. Well done to all of the players and a huge thank you to the Conley family for being our cooks as well as Bronnie van Lith and Hannah Staples for coaching our girls. Basketball Congratulations to Caitlin O'Connell for making the New Zealand Girls' U16 Basketball team, and Raquel Sampson for making the New Zealand Select U16 Girls' Basketball team.
