2 Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School Dear Donors, Thank you for the love, support, and prayers you have shown the students and faculty at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School during this academic year. It is by working together that the OLA students receive an outstanding education. Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School is proud to be a part of the Catholic Church s mission to educate students in the faith. We provide an exceptional, challenging pre-kindergarten through eighth grade educational program that is committed to meeting the needs of all students body, soul, mind, and heart. In the academic year, OLA maintained a healthy enrollment of 523 students. It is important to note that 71% of OLA students are also members of the OLA Church community. As a result of the rigorous academics at OLA, students continue to score in the top 10% of the nation on standardized test scores. This year s Annual Fund participation was at an all-time high of 96.5%. It is your continued generous support of the Annual Fund that we are able to maintain the school facilities and upgrade technology each year. The Home and School Association continues to provide a wonderful group of people who work tirelessly to support the school. The HSA sponsored the first community picnic this year Art in the Park(ing) Lot was very successful in bringing the community together for fun and fellowship. The Advisory Council enthusiastically supports me in my efforts to guide Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School. The support of both of these groups provide the labor and organization for the school to meets its goals. The administration and faculty express sincere gratitude to everyone who so generously contributed to support OLA and our students through the Annual Fund. Your generosity is overwhelming. I encourage you to continue to support the students and faculty during the school year with your prayers. In God s Peace, Lisa Cordell Dear OLA Parents, I hope all had a wonderful and restful summer despite the weather. At least we were not in a drought this year! Our faculty is great and eager to begin as we continue to live up to our Blue Ribbon status. We welcome our new faculty and staff: Rachael Bruss (Pre-K); Gayle Delmonte (Pre-K Aide); Anna Flowers (Music); Nielda Shaw (Kindergarten Aide); and Samantha Wiseman (Middle School Spanish). This represents a 99% returning rate; we are blessed the faculty, staff and administration is strong. Our principal Lisa Cordell gives us strong and pastoral leadership, and for that we are most blessed. Para-liturgies for the younger children are held at least once a week, as is the Eucharistic Liturgy for the older students. I believe this sets the tone and standard for our students, faculty, and staff of what it means to be a Catholic school. This spurs us on to be all that we can be, both in academics and outreach. Some highlights from the year include Art in the Park(ing Lot), a school wide community picnic and student art show; the Second Annual Day of Service, a full day devoted to benefitting many organizations; and the student artwork on the classroom doors, designed and painted by students to personalize the classrooms and beautify the school. I look forward to another successful year academically and spiritually in I thank you, the parents of our children you who are sacrificing your time, talent, and treasure to support Christian/Catholic education. For the past four years she has been a PE teacher at OLA, fostering in her students an appreciation for physical education through her many efforts. Her common sense approach and outstanding work ethic combine to make her a role model for the faculty and staff. Service Jennifer states that at OLA she is encouraged to teach the children more Jennifer West than just PE skills. Her time at OLA has given her not only a job but has helped her grow as a person and a teacher. She is grateful that along with teaching PE on a basic level she is able to teach children the importance of strengthening the mind, body, and spirit and how that correlates to being a whole person. Jennifer introduced an Early Morning Activity opportunity to the school where students arrive early to participate; it has been a resounding success and an innovation which was highlighted by the SACS/SAIS committee following its reaccreditation visit to the school. Jennifer's ability to exhibit strength and inspire belief in others are two qualities that will enable her to be an effective leader in the future. OLA is blessed to have Jennifer as part of its community and feels this award is well deserved! 2

4 Community Support Through the commitment and generous support of OLA s Community, including parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni families, parishioners, friends, foundations and corporate matching programs, OLA has surpassed their goals for this year. There are many people to thank for our success. In addition to our steadfast donors, volunteers are also a crucial part of this success. Thank you to the Annual Fund Chairs for cheerleading our goals through wonderful letters and creative ideas. The Grade Level Captains did an outstanding job contacting parents during the -a-thon to communicate the importance of parent participation. The Development Volunteer Coordinator helps to organize and schedule groups to help with mailings and many special events. What a team! I feel very blessed to work with this supportive, resourceful and dedicated team. Faith Grandparent/Special Others Day St. Patrick s Day was the theme for this year s annual Grandparent/Special Others Day event. Guests were treated to Guinness bread and Irish dancers in between visiting the students classrooms. 3 Many thanks go to all the school families and school staff for the support given to make these events huge successes. We have a great community!

5 Financial Report The year brought exciting upgrades to the campus of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School! A successful fundraising year allowed for the installation of new carpet and new paint. Renovations were made to several spaces in order to allow for a third kindergarten classroom and for a second music room. Additional projects included repairs to exterior plumbing, new flooring and lighting in the gym hallway, and the installation of a carpool canopy, which will be completed in the early fall of The total cost of these upgrades exceeded $190,000, and they could not have been accomplished without the support of the OLA community. Donations to the Annual Fund also helped enhance technology in the school. A new Public Address system, linking the school to the parish offices and preschool, was installed, and additional security cameras were added to the existing surveillance system. The ipad program has been expanded to include the 6th grade, and all teachers received new laptops during the summer of The cost to educate each child at OLA during the school year was $8,726 compared to tuition of $7,570 for Catholic students. The $1,156 difference is made up through the Annual Fund and other fundraising. Long-range financial stability remains an important goal for Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School, and that stability depends upon giving through the Annual Fund and other fundraising efforts. 12 Please visit our website olaschool.org for more information Hearst Drive, NE Atlanta, GA Community Accreditations and Affiliations: SAIS/SACS, NCEA, GISA, AAAIS, AMLI, NAESP, NASSP Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School is accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)/AdvancED. In 1970, OLACS was awarded its initial accreditation by SACS, and in 2006, OLACS received dual accreditation from SAIS/SACS. Every five years In order to remain accredited, a school must demonstrate that it is worthy of receiving the mantel of accreditation by meeting quality standards, by being evaluated by an outside committee composed of peer educators, and by completing a self-study focused on strategic improvement and student performance. Due to this intensive process, SAIS/SACS accreditation is recognized both nationally and internationally as a symbol of quality in education. During , the Archdiocese of Atlanta began the process to receive district-wide accreditation by AdvancED, the parent company of SACS.
