1 Abbas and Templecombe Church of England Primary School School Lane, Templecombe, Somerset, BA8 0HP Head Teacher - Mr James Webb abbastemplecombe@educ.somerset.gov.uk Phone Collective Worship Newsletter (9) Friday 9 th November 2018 In our reflection times this week we have been focusing on community. We have explored the meaning of community from within our school and across the globe. We have also considered what Jesus said when answering the question Who is my neighbour?. In today s reflections pupils shared how they could be good Samaritans: Nathan said Give others a helping hand ; Ruby said Play with them if they are bored ; Andrew said You should take care of others like you do your family. Topaz Class were more specific about who they were trying to help. Firstly a sick child: Tilly said donate blood, cheer them up and give them a present ; Max said read them a story, sing them a song and make them feel at home. Secondly a homeless person: Thom said I could help by giving them food and a drink. School Council Fundraising Update - Children in Need Friday 16 th November PJs and Teddies All children and staff are invited to wear their pyjamas to school (next Friday) and bring a teddy to cuddle in class in exchange for a 1 donation per person. 10p Games At lunchtime the councillors will be running a host of 10p games inspired by Children in Need for all the children to take part in lots of prizes to be won. Each game will cost 10p a go. Spotty Cake and Biscuit Sale After school we will be holding a spotty cake and biscuit sale (50p an item). Donations of cakes and biscuits should please be brought to the school office that morning. As you can see they have lots of plans and it promises to be a great day. Dyeing to fundraise! Thank you to everyone for donating this has raised 29. The colour (and winner) will be revealed on Children in Need day but some truly whacky colours were very popular. Donation of netballs Thank you to Mrs Carr for donating netballs for use at school. Also for the fantastic team bibs which she has made using upcycled materials from the Olympic Games in London. Remembrance Well done to everyone who has donated to the Royal British Legion through the annual poppy appeal and to our Year 6 pupils for running this. On Sunday 11 th November there will be a special Remembrance Day Service starting at 10am in St. Mary s Church followed by an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial by the Church; this begins at 10.50am and will last 15 minutes. This year Fred, Evelyn and Heidi will be laying a wreath from the school. Even if you do not attend the Church service you are more than welcome to join with us for the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial. Time capsule Well done to everyone for the vast variety of entries for the time capsule all have been accepted and Templecombe Tokens will be presented next week. The capsule will be buried later this month but more news on this nearer the time.

2 PTFA: Christmas Cards - If you wish to have handmade Christmas cards designed by your child please use the pack sent home recently. Time is running out. Orders need to be placed ONLINE using the instructions provided before Sunday 11th November. The completed form and artwork MUST be returned to school by Tuesday 13th November. Please contact Ang, Lou, Karen or Donna (or the school office) if you have any queries and we will do our best to help. We will hold a non-uniform day on Friday 23 rd November in exchange for chocolate for the PTFA Christmas Fayre. Donuts & cookies will be on sale again this Friday so please remember your 50p s. Bags2School Thank you to everyone who had a clear out over half term and donated a bag (or two!) to the collection this week. A fantastic 148 was raised. Give As You Live Please don t forget to use the Give As You Live website when you purchase online as the school PTFA receive an amount of money every time you purchase. Writing and Photography Competition for pupils next Friday is the last day We will be holding a writing and photography competition to select winners to be submitted for the Brue Valley Rotary Club annual competition. Please all entrees to abbastemplecombe@educ.somerset.gov.uk by Friday 16 th November so that prizes can be awarded at our Praise Assembly on Friday 23 rd November. The Rotary Young Writer Competition task is to produce a piece entitled My Inspiration. Up to 500 words may be submitted. The written entry can be fiction or non-fiction, a story or a poem, as long as the piece relates to the theme. The Rotary Young Photographer Competition entrant is asked to submit 3 photographs, together with a short (50-word maximum) interpretation of the photographs to the given theme. The theme for the competition this year is The Beauty of Nature. World War 1 Centenary- Whole school history day As part of the events that are taking place across the country this year to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War One on the 11th November, the children will be taking part in a history focus day on Monday 12th November. This will involve a whole school introductory assembly followed by a series of workshops to answer the following enquiry questions: KS1: Why do we wear poppies? What was life like for children during World War One? KS2: What was life like at home in Britain during WW1? Why do we wear poppies? Were the German soldiers just like the British soldiers? We hope that this day will help the children to develop their understanding of why remembrance is still important one hundred years on. Emotion Coaching Parent session Please do come and join us for this very important event.

3 Lunchtime Award - A massive congratulations to Evie and Destiny in Topaz Class and Lilly in Diamond Class for winning this week s lunchtime award. Please make sure you come and see me to collect your prize. Cake raffle This week s winner is Mason in Diamond Class. Thank you to everyone who bakes the cakes and buys the tickets - all money raised is put towards school trips and other events that children love. We need two more volunteers please, for the last two weeks of this term! We all hope you have a fantastic weekend. Mr Webb
