Introduction to the study of English pragmatics: using and understanding language 2. Deixis: the relation of reference to the point of origin of the utterance 3. Presupposition: accommodating background knowledge 4. Speech acts: language as action 5. Implicit meaning 6. Relevance Theory 7. Metapragmatic awareness 8. Pragmatic inference and language evolution 9. Politeness phenomena 10. Empirical pragmatics, interactive pragmatics, talk-in-interaction 11. Intercultural pragmatics 12. Doing project work in pragmatics GENERAL ENGLISH B2/C1 LEVEL (Practical Part) Practical classes, or general English (Esercitazioni) General English practical classes taught by language teachers. Their objective is acquiring linguistic competence at a B2/C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The classes will be taught from October to May with no interruption; in January and February, during the exam weeks, they will have a reduced schedule. For the timetable, please visit the faculty website. SYLLABUS: (students will be tested on the following grammatical and lexical structures which, therefore, should be covered during classroom time).

2 2 As a general rule, the grammatical and lexical forms which are included in the programmes for the inferior levels English Language 2 (B2 level) in this case are to be considered as an integral part of the following syllabus. OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI (risultati di apprendimento dell insegnamento): After attending both the theoretical part and the practical part of the English Language 3 course, students will: 1. Have acquired written and oral linguistic and metalinguistic competence at the B2/C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; 2. Be able to provide a theoretical and analytical description of a text featuring an authentic or fictional communicative interaction by means of a pragmatic approach and the specialised language and terminology of the discipline. Students will be able to define the main topics and theories developed by studies on English pragmatics and to utilise them in the examination of the structure of communicative interaction. The competences acquired in this discipline will be particularly useful when applied to the fields of translation, interlanguage contact and linguistic and cultural mediation, and will help students to identify and solve problems arising from linguistic and cultural exchanges at several linguistic levels. PREREQUISITI: English Language 2 (B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) METODI DIDATTICI (lezioni, esercitazioni ): Theoretical lectures (20 hours), or English linguistics, and practical classes, or general English (Esercitazioni). The general English practical classes will be taught both in classrooms and multimedia labs. The lab classes will be an integral part of the entire course and will prepare the students for the final written exam. Attending lectures and classes is not compulsory but is highly recommended.

5 5 MODALITA DI VERIFICA DELL APPRENDIMENTO (esame scritto, orale con descrizione dettagliata delle modalità di svolgimento e dei criteri di verifica dell acquisizione delle competenze): The final exam will consist of a written exam on the general English practical part, followed by an oral exam on the English linguistics theoretical part. PRAGMATICS (Theoretical Part) Theoretical lessons, or English linguistics The competence in the English linguistics theoretical part will be assessed by means of an oral exam. The exam will test the achievement of the teaching objectives and the learning results as described in this official exam programme. During the oral exam, the students will be able to show that: 1. They have acquired theoretical competence in the discipline, along with its specialised language and terminology; 2. They can apply that theoretical competence to the analysis of samples of communicative interactions and discuss their features and strategies. GENERAL ENGLISH B2/C1 LEVEL (Practical Part) Practical classes, or general English (Esercitazioni) The students linguistic competence in the general English practical part will be assessed by means of a B2/C1-level written exam in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The exam will consist of four different tests: two in the lab (listening + multiple choice) and two in a classroom (reading comprehension + writing). The lab tests will be aimed at assessing the students abilities to understand the language used by both Anglophone native speakers (British, American, Australian, etc.) and ELF (English as a Lingua Franca) speakers. The lab tests will also be aimed at assessing the students grammatical and lexical knowledge. The classroom tests will assess the students skills at reading and writing short texts of various types, mainly academic texts.
