MESSAGE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR, UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA Assalamualaikum W.B.T and Salam Sejahtera. A warm welcome to everyone attending this conference. I am delighted to know that presenters and participants are coming from over 36 countries. There are only 10 ASEAN countries but the response from countries outside the ASEAN region shows that the world is indeed interested in ASEAN. Universiti Putra Malaysia believes that there is a place for conferences which are varied and which serve different purposes. UPM s other conferences on English Language Teaching, the MICELT, ICELT, I- MELT, Creative Writing and English Language Teaching Materials Conferences have their own following. This new conference is especially dedicated to ASEAN. It s our hope that this will be the beginning of a new initiative to bring teachers of English within the ASEAN region together every year. While 2018 will be the year it starts in UPM, Malaysia, we hope that next year it will move to another ASEAN country. I understand that this new brand in conferences is adopting the innovative approaches of our other conferences, notably the MICELT and the ICELT. Both these conferences served classroom teachers and as such best practices was given emphasis. Even research findings which were presented at these conferences were connected to classroom issues. ASEANELT 2018 will follow the innovative trend that UPM has established very successfully. As such our conferences will have, apart from researchers, a wide range of people with diverse talent and from different areas of specialization. We have comedians, story tellers, poets, writers, jazz musicians and rappers, all wanting to contribute to teacher professional development! ASEAN is now heading towards ASEAN COMMUNITIES and soon there will be changes that will lead to open borders and mobility. Mobility will include faculty and student mobility and with that all 10 ASEAN nations will, at some stage, get their universities to start teaching their programs in English. This will be a serious challenge to many people in the region. I sincerely hope that the proposed formation of the ASEANELT Secretariat will be a success and that we can help ASEAN achieve the objectives of the group within the context of ASEAN COMMUNITIES. I thank every one of you for coming and supporting the conference. I would especially like to thank our partner, Universitas Islam Negri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and the co-organizers, MARA, UTHM, UPSI, NRRU (Thailand) and The Ministry of Education, Malaysia for the wonderful support. I wish everyone all the best! Thank you. WITH KNOWLEDGE, WE SERVE Prof. Datin Paduka Dato Dr. Aini Ideris, FASc. Vice Chancellor 1

It is the 3 rd International Conference as a result of collaboration works from the two universities, as we have the same commitment to disseminating knowledge for the benefit of our society. The two previous conferences with ELT and Education theme were held at UIN Jakarta, both in The theme of the 2018 Conference Maximizing the Potential in ASEAN Diversities through English will underpin the need for collaboration and cooperation of individuals from a wide range of professional backgrounds. I trust that the conference will not only provide a useful forum to the participants to share their expertise for extending collaborations in the field of English Language Teaching, but will also be professionally beneficial to them. Let me quote what have been said by the former ASEAN Secretary General, H.E. Le Luong Minh, regarding the needs of English in ASEAN: With the diversity in ASEAN reflected in our diverse histories, races, cultures and belief systems, English is an important and indispensable tool to bring our Community closer together. Used as the working language of ASEAN, English enables us to interact with other ASEAN colleagues in our formal meetings as well as day-to-day communications. From these interactions, we are able to get to know better our regional neighbors, their interests, their concerns, as well as their dreams and aspirations. Through English, we are raising our awareness of the ASEAN region and, with the many characteristics we share and hold dear, further strengthening our sense of an ASEAN Community. The 1 st ASEAN ELT Conference s main objective is to provide a mean to achieve these goals for our diverse regional community. The Conference will strive to offer plenty of networking opportunities, providing you with the opportunity to meet and interact with the leading scientists and researchers, friends and colleagues as well as sponsors and exhibitors. We hope you will join us for a symphony of outstanding science, and take a little extra time to enjoy the spectacular and unique beauty of this region. With best wishes, Prof. Dr. Dede Rosyada, MA Rector, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta 2

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR, UNIVERSITI TUN HUSSEIN ONN MALAYSIA Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Taala Wabarakatuh. In The Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful, I am honoured to be given the opportunity to address the first collaboration between the Centre for Language Studies (CLS), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia and the Center for the Advancement of Language Competence (CALC), Universiti Putra Malaysia in organising this conference. First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the two centres on this joint effort to bring together English Language Teaching (ELT) practitioners and researchers on a mutual platform. Indeed, Industrial Revolution 4.0 has and will continue to change the landscape of education today and educators are forced to address this transformation more earnestly. Increase in interconnectedness and accessibility puts English language skills and competencies at the forefront of the changes. Thus, it is heartening to note that this conference has taken the initiative to address this issue in improving ELT classrooms and students learning. The 1 st International ASEAN English Language Teaching Conference 2018 (ASEAN-ELT 2018) chosen theme; Maximising the Potential in ASEAN Diversities through the English Language, is a theme that is of great importance in today s global and educational developments specifically in the field of language teaching and learning. The conference offers a balance of presentations on classroom practices with those that are based on research. The focus is to help participants experience an array of presentations from esteemed featured speakers, world s best ELT classroom specialists, performers and researchers in the fields of English Language Teaching, English Language Studies and Applied Linguistics. Through the participation of ELT practitioners from all over the world, the conference aims to enhance regional collaborations in research and dissemination of research. It is my hope that this conference will be a fruitful experience for every participant and that it will open doors for greater collaborations, both in research and best practices. I would also like to thank the organising committee for their dedication and commitment in ensuring that this conference materialises, which is not an easy feat considering the locations of the two collaborating centres. Thank you again to all of you for your participation and please enjoy the conference as well as your stay in Malacca, one of Malaysia s unique Historic City. Prof. Dr. Wahid Bin Razzaly Vice Chancellor, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) 3

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR, UNIVERSITI PENDIDIKAN SULTAN IDRIS Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh; Salam 1 Malaysia; and Salam Cemerlang Bersama. First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Centre for the Advancement of Language Competence, Universiti Putra Malaysia (CALC) and the Centre for Languages and General Studies, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (CEFLAGS) for this fruitful collaboration. The ASEAN-ELT Conference is a medium where many practitioners in the field come together and share ideas of the contemporary trends in teaching and learning the English language. Aligned with Education 4.0, the learning process should not be constrained within the school compound and within the schooling hours but should reach the learners beyond all that. English language teaching and learning in Malaysia has become vital ever since the emerging of a world without boundaries where information and knowledge are widely available and accessible by all. Learners get to learn the language at their own pace with the assistance from the teachers through the sharing of contents, which are made available on the Internet. In view of this, we hope to confer many new ideas in this conference thus equipping the participants with the methodologies and hopefully to achieve and inculcate the pedagogy, paragogy, heutagogy and cybergogy in the learning of English language. With this regard, we wish to create a better learning environment in the future where the focus is given to the development of humanity on par with the needs of the industry. Finally, I would like to express my special thanks to the working committee and hope this collaboration would make a significant impact in making the learning of the language a wonderful experience not only in Malaysia but also in ASEAN countries and throughout the world. The world today is the world for a better tomorrow. So, let us work hand in hand for the future and let it start today, here at the very first ASEAN English Language Teaching Conference. Thank you. Committed To Making A Difference In Education Professor Dato Dr Mohammad Shatar Bin Sabran Vice Chancellor, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) 4

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR, MARA HIGHER EDUCATION DIVISION First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to Allah because of His blessing, we could be together today to be part of this special event The 1 st International ASEAN English Language Teaching Conference 2018 (ASEAN-ELT 2018) held in Malacca hosted by UPM and also co-hosted by MARA. Matching the theme which is Maximising the Potential in ASEAN Diversities through the English Language and our ambition at MARA Education Sector to produce graduates with globalized capacity we fully support this conference with a view to help out educators to get the best out of our students from this region. With a myriad of English Language proficiency problems affecting our nation and region, educators can also improve and learn from the wisdom, experiences, and working models shared by other respective colleagues in the education world that would significantly improve our nation s future hope in gaining greater ability to communicate and use the universal language more effectively. In addition, this conference offers the chance for participants to be responsive and receptive of the idea of how the future education works as all of us must be prepared and quickly adapt to the changes in this sector. In order to be competitive in this current era, a person has to maintain excellence holistically and to do that, adequate knowledge in the language is crucial. Lastly, I do hope that the sharing of new pedagogical approaches and methods can ignite any useful discussion in an effort to improve the application of the researches done in which the focus is especially on improving the quality of a citizen s life. Abd Hamid Bin Hj Ahmad Director MARA Higher Education Division 6

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR, MARA SECONDARY EDUCATION DIVISION At present, one of the dilemmas facing educators is how to prepare students for jobs that don t yet exist. Today s generation is expected to have 10 to 17 careers by the time they are 35, compared with our four to seven careers. Educators are expected to provide students with not only just in time skills but also a set of fluencies required to succeed in an increasingly global landscape. These include an ability to problem solve, communicate effectively, use creativity, think analytically without supervision and collaborate with both real and virtual worlds. While ipads and mobile phones may be commonplace in 21 st century classrooms, the best app for students is a great teacher. It is based on this premise that Secondary Education Division continues to join in conferences organised by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). I believe partaking in The 1 st International ASEAN-English Language Teaching (ASEAN-ELT) Conference will further enhance our teachers skills and capabilities since their effectiveness in classroom is vital for efficient learning process, ensuring the delivery of the above objectives. This year s theme Maximizing The Potential in ASEAN Diversities Through The English Language is parallel with the 21 st Century Learning tenet that celebrates the ingenuity in education, amongst other things. I am sure that through ASEAN-ELT, participants will acquire the latest pedagogical knowledge and share best practices with their counterparts. It is my sincere hope that the participants will be able to generate enjoyable lessons that are meaningful to their students. Kamaruzaman Bin Jaffar Director, Secondary Education Division, MARA 7

PARALLEL 1 / / ROOM 1 DAY 1 (15 TH MARCH / THURSDAY) PARALLEL 1 (A1) CHRISTINE MANARA (S633) (UNIVERSITAS KATOLIK INDONESIA ATMA JAYA) I DON T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU SAID. YOU SPEAK WITH AN ACCENT : TEACHERS NARRATIVES OF VULNERABILITY This study looks at three English language teachers talking about their vulnerable moments in their teaching lives as part of their professional learning and how these teachers manage their emotions in their professional lives. The study particularly explores 1) critical incidents; 2) the emotions they experienced at these critical moments; 3) how they make meaning of these critical moments. The study situates itself under the narrative inquiry framework. Data was obtained from in-depth interviews and follow-ups communication with the teachers. The interview was audio-recorded and transcribed. The narrative data is analyzed using an inductive (grounded) approach by focusing on re-occurring and emerging themes and issues. The preliminary analysis of the data depicts the participants complex interactions with various Discourses of Professionalism in English Language Teaching and emotional struggles while dialoguing, conforming, positioning, and negotiating oneself. The participants narratives provide insights on the necessity of preparing teachers for the unspoken (unpleasant) realities that has often been overlooked in teacher education program teachers emotion and endurance. PARALLEL 1 / / ROOM 2 (A2) VU TRAN-THANH (S596) (VIEN DONG COLLEGE) INTEGRATING STUDENTS CULTURE INTO THE ENGLISH CLASSROOM: WHY AND HOW? It is inevitable that culture plays a significant role in language teaching and learning. Kilickaya (2004) states that knowing a language requires the knowledge of the culture underlying the language. Additionally, Zohrabi and Shah (2009) claim that as many learners are using English in the international working environment, they need to have a knowledge of their own culture and other cultures as well to avoid possible misunderstandings. A need for understanding and using the knowledge of learners own culture by means of the English language, therefore, exists so as to facilitate effective cross-cultural communication. However, English coursebooks cannot specifically include the cultural features of each country where they are used, which imposes the burden on the English teachers. This paper, accordingly, addresses this issue by first discussing the importance of culture in language teaching. It will then highlight the significance of employing culturally-included teaching materials. Finally, recommendations in integrating students culture into the teaching and learning process will be made. PARALLEL 1 / / ROOM 3 (A3) MOHAMMAD NOR AFANDI BIN IBRAHIM (S549) (UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA CAWANGAN MELAKA KAMPUS ALOR GAJAH) GERALDINE DE MELLO (S550) (UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA CAWANGAN MELAKA KAMPUS ALOR GAJAH) MISYANA SUSANTI BINTI MA MOR (S551) (UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA CAWANGAN MELAKA KAMPUS ALOR GAJAH) PREPARATION FOR WORKPLACE WRITING: A SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL APPROACH The English Exit Test was conceived to assist prospective employers to gauge UiTM graduates English language readiness for the workplace. It has two components namely speaking and writing. The focus of this paper is on Task 2 of the writing component. The students are expected to produce either an article, or part of a proposal or part of a report. Students are often given explicit guidance through scaffolding. However, with scaffolding, there is a concern that students will produce similar-structured pieces of written work. In differentiating good pieces from not so well written ones, Halliday s clause-complex framework has been used to analyse the test scripts because clause is a central source for making meaning. The preliminary results of the study indicate that writers of different ability employed different types of clause-complexes as well as favoured different types of logico-semantic relations in their writings. Thus, it can be argued that explicit instructions on appropriate clause-complex use and logico-semantic relation deployment should be incorporated in writing lessons to help students identify the appropriate logico-semantic relations for workplace writing. PARALLEL 1 / / ROOM 4 (A4) BJ S. SOLANCHO (S210) (UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MINDANAO) POLICE INTERVIEW: A FORENSIC LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS. The study determined the forensic linguistic analysis of police interview, the different types of questions, the types of violations of the Gricean Maxims and structure of police interview. The data were 50 cases of recorded police interviews in the form of Judicial Affidavits. Results revealed that the IPO (Investigative Police Officer) used probing, narrative/explanation seeking questions most of the time with little use of request, closed identificatory, and closed yes/no questions. Ignoring the cooperative principle specifically the maxim of relevance in this type of response does not make the answer useless because it gives the listener or reader a rundown of what happened. Structure begins with asking simple questions to put the witness at ease and help to build a rapport. The introduction of these diverse types of questions may be used in the classroom to maximize learning and sharing of information. While following the Cooperative Principle creates a clear conversation, ignorance of its rules makes a lively and mind-cultivating talk. PARALLEL 1 / / ROOM 5 (A5) MARK JUDE B. ANSING (S202) 23

(UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MINDANAO) ANALYSIS OF PRESIDENT RODRIGO DUTERTE S PRESS CONFERENCES The main objective of this study was to analyze the press conferences of President Rodrigo Duterte. The data used were gathered from online government gazette consisting of transcriptions of the press conferences. Results revealed that Duterte s press conference speeches used seven types of lexicon namely vulgarity, name calling, gutter, legal jargon, interjection, vernacular, and neologism. The common maxims are maxims of quality, quantity, and relevance. The president violated the four maxims because the Cooperative Principle of H.P Grice which says that one should be informative, truthful, relevant, and perspicuous during a conversation. Five issues were embedded in his speeches namely illegal drugs, corruption, criminality, human rights, and Former President Marcos burial. There were errors in the use of language both Filipino and English which could be confusing if not dangerous. During the press conference, it was found out that the speaker cooperated most of the time and answered the questions of the media by following the Cooperative principle. PARALLEL 1 / / ROOM 6 (A6) ALLISON PAULIYA AMIN (S292) (MAKTAB RENDAH SAINS MARA) PROJECT T.A.L.K Speaking in English has always been a great source of anxiety for L2 students. Students lack the tools and language to express themselves clearly. They also run out of ideas about how to continue a conversation which leads them to feel frustrated, and eventually revert to L1 usage. The purpose of this study is to develop a practical approach in improving students communicative ability. The subjects of this study are 27 students in Form 3 (15-year olds) of mixed abilities. Research instruments used are sociometric devices and observation forms. Findings of this study will help improve communicative competence and aid in developing tools to continuously expand on this area. PARALLEL 1 / / ROOM 7 (A7) THI MAI DUYEN PHAM (S246) (CAN THO UNIVERSITY) THE PERCEPTIONS OF ENGLISH TEACHERS AT CANTHO UNIVERSITY IN THE INTEGRATION OF CULTURE INTO ENGLISH CLASSES This study was to explore the perceptions of English teachers at Cantho University in the integration of Culture into English classes. The data for this study were collected through questionnaires of 96 English teachers at Cantho University and through interviewing 10 of them. The overall findings of the study showed that the teacher participants have a strong agreement about the idea that culture plays an important role in English classes, and cultural elements can help learners improve their linguistic and communicative competence. Especially, being successful in multicultural communication is the prior aim of teachers culture integration. Secondly, teachers can use different sources of materials and different learning activities to embed culture in English classes. Thirdly, teachers can play a variety of roles in culture integration, and finally they think that policies, teachers low salary, teachers limited class time and students limited class time and their not interest are the main barriers. From the findings of this study, useful suggestions were proposed for English teachers, teacher educators, educational local leaders, policy makers, and community so that the integration of culture into English classes would be encouraged and become more effective. PARALLEL 1 / / ROOM 8 (A8) FRENCH Y. OSORIO (S225) (UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MINDANAO) A SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF TELENOVELA: ENTAILMENT, TAUTOLOGY AND PRESUPPOSITION IN FOCUS This study was conducted to analyze the entailment, tautology and presupposition in telenovelas and provide the over-all structure of telenovela. This study is a qualitative research employing semantic analysis which analyses the utterances of the characters of a telenovela. Various telenovela clips were subject for analysis, countless utterances of the characters are essential and serves as a focal point of this study. The statements were documented and print out, the utterances were also transcribed and translated into English for a more definite understanding. The utterances were categorized according on how it was uttered or used by the characters, then the utterances that contains entailments, tautology and presuppositions were labeled and classified. In-depth transcription was conducted and experts validated the veracity of the transcription. The study revealed that in entailment the speaker both use direct and indirect statements in order to provide an explicit meaning while in presupposition the speakers assumption was considered to be true and assert other information and tautology were used for emphasis and intensify and highlight the utterances. PARALLEL 1 / / ROOM 9 (A9) EARL JAY G. SAJOR (S223) (UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MINDANAO) EDITORIAL ARTICLES: A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS Editorial articles play a significant role in understanding the issues happening across the society. This study sought to identify, analyze, and interpret the critical components present in the editorial articles, the dominant linguistic devices and the organization of the editorial articles. The results revealed that most editorial articles contain critical components such as political, cultural, economic, welfare, educational, and environmental issues which are the common problems of the past and are continuously rising in the present time. Furthermore, the results divulged that the dominant linguistic devices of the editorial articles utilizing Halliday and Hasan s (1978) cohesion are reference, conjunction, substitution and ellipsis under grammatical cohesion while the lexical cohesive devices are reiteration and collocation. Moreover, in the organization of the editorial articles, the commonly used process is the traditional 24
