! Work and succeed together YEAR 5 HOMEWORK Year 5 Homework Handbook 2017 At IIL we believe strongly in the home-school partnership. It is vital that things learnt at school are reinforced and added to at home by parents and carers. Your child will bring home Homework each week. It is important to explore this learning, and children will also need to enjoy reading every night. Homework must be signed by a parent or guardian to indicate to the teacher that it has been checked. The Aim of Homework it gives extra practise with things your child has learnt. it extends and supports the work your child is doing in school. it encourages students to further their learning. it reinforces skills that build an independent work ethic. it allows you and your child to learn together. Homework will enable you to see the kind of work your child is doing and how they approach it. It will strengthen the home school bond and your child will enjoy sharing their work with you. In this Homework Handbook you will find listed detailed information to many questions parents often have regarding homework. This packet is in addition to the information provided in the half-termly Outline of Work. As part of our continuing effort to improve links between school and home, many parents felt it would be helpful to receive some further guidance regarding the work children are expected to complete out of school time. As a school, we are aware of the importance of out of school activities and we would not wish homework to prevent these activities from taking place. Our policy is therefore, that children will be given one whole week to complete homework tasks.

Where can I find each year group s Outline of Work for each term? Please use the following links throughout the year. Please visit the English Primary website at iil.ch Please follow the path below to reach each year group s Outline of Work for each term. path: IIL.ch>primary>downloads>Outline of Work Our assessment and evaluation calendar can be found on the following path. path: IIL.ch>english>calendars>primary Where will I find set homework task that my child brings home each week? Students will receive a green IIL Book Bag and a plastic folder during the start of the academic school year. All homework assignments, worksheets and reading or library books will be kept in the plastic folder and carried to and from school in the IIL Book Bag. To ensure homework assignments, reading books and library books are kept in good condition, we request that all snacks or lunch boxes, and water bottles are carried in a separate bag. How will I know what assignments my child will need to complete each week? Each week homework will be communicated using the following formatted sheet, which will be found in the homework plastic folder. Example: Year 5 Homework Autumn 1 Week 1 WEEK COMMENCING XX/XX/XX Spelling: Unit 20 Spelling Activity Sheet: Week 20 Bug Club: login to begin reading! Literacy: Adjectives Abacus Online: Excellent Estimating Abacus Worksheet: Week 12 French: (assigned by French teacher on Friday) Half Term Project: Design a Bug Hotel Due: Monday, 23rd October 2017 For more information, please visit Year 5, Autumn s Outline of Work Path: iil.ch> English Teaching > Primary > documents Please remember to sign this sheet, which the children will bring back to school.

What should I see in my child s book bag each day? Day Subject Daily (15 minutes) Reading (15 minutes daily) Please use the reading prompt sheet in your Year 5 Homework Handbook to help enrich the reading process with your child. Bug Club ebooks (one every week) - the children will be allocated one ebook every week on their online Active learn forum. These are allocated to support their reading books in school and enrich their comprehension skills. Each ebook (reading and comprehension exercise) can be completed over a seven-day period. We will be able to see when the children have completed the books on their Active learn forums. Monday Year 5 Homework Assignment Sheet (weekly) Bug Club Online ebook Tuesday Spelling (weekly) - A spelling list of around 15 words will be sent home and the vocabulary will be tested the following Tuesday. A weekly spelling consolidation sheet will also be sent home to support the spelling rules covered in class. Thursday (25 minutes) Literacy (weekly)- the children will complete a grammar worksheet that will allow them to consolidate and review the literacy covered in class. Friday Abacus Online Task (weekly) - the children will have a task allocated to their Abacus account each week. These tasks are allocated to support their numeracy teaching in class. Please ensure they work to complete the set tasks. We are able to see when the children have completed a task and will review the assigned objectives in class. Abacus Homework Sheet (weekly) alongside the allocated online tasks, children will also have a written homework assignment that reviews and gives extra practice to the objectives covered in class during that week. French Homework Sheet (weekly)- French homework will continue to be set by the French teachers who work within the English primary section. The children will be given a week to complete the task set and must seek guidance by Monday if they have questions relating to the task. Each Half Term Project tasks (one every half term)- Projects will be set and tie in with an area of History, Geography or Science.

What books will my child bring home in their plastic homework folder and green book bag? 1. Reading (green book bags) - your child will have a reading book every day in their green book bags. This will have been chosen to support their reading level. They are always very excited about their new books and are involved in the process of choosing these. We suggest you read with your child every evening and use the reading prompt sheet in your Homework Handbook to help and develop their understanding of the story too. Please record the reading experience and any comments in the yellow Reading Record. This could include: a short sentence to say how the children approached the book. highlight any area you felt they found challenging record the wonderful progress they are making. We also encourage the children to be active in their learning by: documenting a very short summary documenting new vocabulary gained from the reading. Remember, reading assignments are more affective when students read for quality, not quantity. 2. Spellings (homework folder)- The children will be given a list of spelling word to learn each week. These will be chosen to support their learning in class. The words are taken from our scheme of work for literacy. You will find the list in their yellow spelling books. 3. Maths worksheet (homework folder)- Material from the Abacus maths programme will be sent home weekly. Homework worksheets will complement the online assignments and be set to reinforce class-work. Homework can either be accomplished during etude time or at home. However, the worksheet will still be sent home for parent review. 4. Literacy worksheet (homework folder)- To support grammar and spelling objectives covered in class, students will be active in practising those skills that further their development within the English language. 5. Half Term Project assignment- These tasks will be set each half term. Each project will be set by your class teacher and tie in with other areas of the curriculum. This will give each child the opportunity to develop enquiry based learning, and allow for flexibility in terms of personal organisation and extending personal boundaries.

How will my child access the online homework? Material from the Active Learn Account will be available online, and weekly homework tasks will be set to reinforce classwork. Your child's teacher will communicate the procedure for logging-on to the program once the working maths and reading groups have been determined. Homework can therefore either be accomplished during etude time on school ipads, or at home on a home computer or ipad. The teacher will be able to monitor that the work has been accomplished on-line. What tasks will my child need to access online? 1. Bug Club ebooks (online) - The children will be allocated, by their classroom teacher, an ebook every week. There are many activities associated with the book allocation and the children will have a wonderful experience exploring this new forum for reading. The ebook is intended to support their reading comprehension skills and reading book level. 2. Maths homework (online)- The children will be allocated an activity to complete on the Active Learn site. The task will be chosen to support their current numeracy work in the classroom. The class teacher will be able to see how the children are working with the activities and when they have completed a task.

How can I help my child with Maths when I don t know the methods used in class? The following are some of the strategies for numeracy we use in class. Addition 1. Using partitioning 2. Using a blank number line 3. Vertical layout 4. Compact written method. 5. Compact written method with decimals

Subtraction 1.As taking away using a number line. 2. Compact written method. 3. Compact written method with decimals.

Multiplication 1.Vertical method. 2. Using 2 digits.

3, Compact method. 4. Multiplying including decimals.

Division 1.Division as repeated addition with a remainder. 2. Division as repeated subtraction. 3. Dividing using a single digit. 4.Using a single digit with a remainder. 5.Division with repeated multiplication

6. Division including decimals.

What resources can I use to support the homework? The following resources can be used to support the homework tasks set. Please also refer to the Year 5 Welcome Pack 2017 where you will find some resources to be used throughout the year. 1. Reading Prompts Example of questions you could ask. Language What are some interesting words, phrases or sentences in the story? What were the strongest words the author used? Illustrations What was your favourite illustration? Why did you choose that one? What did the illustrations add to the story? What word could I help explain to you? Can you tell me the meaning of? Genre What is the genre of this book? How do you know? Is this text a good example of the genre? Why? How was this book like other books you have read in this genre? Questions to support Comprehension Who is the author/illustrator of the story? How do you think the character was feeling? Show me what words/phrases tell us that. What do you think will happen next? What makes you think that? The books your child brings home are at their reading level. They should be able to read them fluently and understand the story or text they have read. Also, rereading books builds on fluency and expression, so reading the same book twice is encouraged!

2. Spellings: SACAWAC Study- Ask your child to look at a new spelling and take a pretend photograph of it in their head and Cover- Ask them to cover up the word they have looked at. Can they recall the pattern that they studied? and Write- Ask your child to say the word and then write it down. and Check- Encourage your child to check what they have written. Praise all efforts made, even if they have only written a couple of correct letters and repeat the process a few times until they know it fluently. They need to practice new spellings daily, to ensure they have truly learned them. Point out any tricky words or similar spelling patterns. Can words be sounded out? Does the word build on any known spelling patterns? Can it be broken down into a root and prefixes and/or suffixes? Can the words be used in different contexts to demonstrate understanding? Children who learn spellings in one period of time, tend not to remember them a few days later. We encourage students to study and review their spellings a little bit every day. The key to learning assigned spelling patterns is to practice and review often. 3. Mental Maths - Practising Mental Maths is very important to developing your child s numeracy (understanding of number). The following are some ideas to support your child s learning. quick games and counting activities e.g. in the car, whilst walking to school, in the bath. learning by heart all pairs of numbers (number bonds) that equal 10, 20 and 100 learning doubles of all numbers to 10 and 100 counting in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s reviewing simple additions and subtractions reviewing the relation of multiplication and division facts. calculating differences. i.e (7+ = 12) adding up to the next 10. i.e 43 + = 50). This relates to knowing number bonds.

4. Times tables- Times tables and division facts are key skills to know. Children can practice their times tables by: writing them out unaided (i.e. 1 x 6 =6, 2 x 6 = 12) asking them random times tables questions and division facts, then giving them time to answer. making it fun: you say the first number (i.e. 1 x 6 = 6), then your children says the next i.e. 2x 6 = 12. Keep taking turns! count by 2a, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s while in the car, going up stairs, skipping, passing a ball, etc looking at the patterns in each table e.g. all the numbers are even in the 2, 4, 6 and 8 times tables! The digits of each number in the 9 times tables add to 9! If you know your 4 times tables, you can learn your 8! Practising is key!!! As is giving your child plenty of time to answer. 5. Apps Here is a list of recommended ipad applications which your child can use at home. Time spent on this will consolidate certain objectives covered in class: Spelling Games 4 Targeting Maths 5 and 6 IED KS2 English IED KS2 Maths 6. Grammar Here are some terms your child might need to review at home. Adjective o A word that describes a noun e.g. the cat is very happy Adverb o A word that describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb e.g. the cat is extremely small / the cat moved stealthily Preposition o A word that gives information, such as time, location or direction e.g on, at, between

Conjunction o A word that joins words, sentences or clauses. e.g. because, which, who Prefix o An element placed at the beginning of a word to adjust or qualify its meaning. (e.g. un, dis, mis) Clause o A sentence that functions independently. e.g. I ll feed the dog. o A part of the sentence that is dependent upon another part e.g. I ll feed the dog [main clause] when he barks [subordinate clause]! Consonant o A speech sound that is not a vowel e.g. b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,q,r,s,t,v,w,x,y,z Vowel o A speech sound made with your mouth open and your tongue in the middle of your mouth not touching your teeth, lips, etc e.g. a, e, i, o, u Inverted commas speech marks o Punctuation marks that are used in writing to show where speech or a quotation begins and ends. e.g. I love school! shouted the student. Please also visit The English Primary Section s pages on the IIL website where you will find our Calendars, Policies and Parent Handbook available to download.

What skills will help my child be more independent and self-engaged to complete homework? Personal responsibility and time management are important elements to support your child s growth to independence. Here is a chart that can be used to support those areas of responsibility and scaffold your child s maturing skills. Personal skills Practice? Nearly! I can do it! I can get up on time. I can wash, dress and tie my shoelaces. I can remember everything I need for school. I make my journey to school safely and with respect to others. I can arrive at school on time! I understand how important it is to have a good night s sleep. I spend some time reading every night. I practice my spelling rules daily. I focus to complete and turn in my homework on time. I can keep track of my belongings. Managing time Practice? Nearly! I can do it! I can tell the time using both an analogue and digital clock. I can plan my journey, allowing enough time to get places. I am ready to start my lesson on time. How I look for school! Practice? Nearly! I can do it! I remember to wear a full school uniform EVERY DAY! I bring my PE/swimming kit to change into each week and remember to take it home for washing! I brush my teeth twice a day for at least two minutes!

Conclusion: We appreciate that many of our children have a very full extra-curricular programme and believe that this more flexible homework outline will allow children to accomplish their homework tasks at a more balanced rhythm. If you are of the opinion that your child needs further work, the Abacus activities which have been set for your child can be revisited to reinforce mathematical concepts. Please contact your class teacher if you need further information and advice about the homework tasks set. We hope you enjoy the work your child has to do at home and being able to share this positive and fun learning experience with your child. Thank you for your wonderful support in all the homework activities throughout the year. The English Primary Section Year 5 Team lbisol@iil.ch klapworth@iil.ch mbeveridge@iil.ch
