3 Professional development schools (PDSs) are innovative institutions formed through partnerships between professional education programs and P 12 schools. PDS partnerships have a four-fold mission: the preparation of new teachers, faculty development, inquiry directed at the improvement of practice, and enhanced student achievement. PDSs improve both the quality of teaching and student learning. PDSs are often compared to teaching hospitals, which are also hybrid institutions created in the early twentieth century. As practicing professions, both teaching and medicine require a sound academic program and intense clinical preparation. The teaching hospital was designed to provide such clinical preparation for medical students and interns; PDSs serve the same function for teacher candidates and in-service faculty. Both settings provide support for professional learning in a realworld setting in which practice takes place. Excerpt from: Monmouth University/Middle Road PDS Mission Statement The Professional Development School established by the Monmouth University School of Education and the Middle Road School (Hazlet Township) is a learning-centered community that endeavors to collaboratively promote and sustain: 1. Effective teaching and learning experiences which focus on the achievement of our students (pre K -16). 2. Mutual responsibility for the preparation of teacher candidates. 3. Professional growth opportunities for pre-service and in-service teachers, university faculty, and administrators 4. Inquiry, research, reflection, and best practices. PDS Belief Statements Our PDS partners share a common vision of effective teaching and learning grounded in research and best practice. Furthermore, we believe that: We are a professional learning community dedicated to the success of all our students and faculty. Student learning is the main focus of our collaborative work. Continuous, high quality professional development positively impacts student learning. We have a shared responsibility to the high quality preparation of future educators. Our mutual focus on inquiry, reflection, innovation, and best practices will result in increased student achievement.

4 Professional Conduct PDS Guidelines for University Students Professional dress is expected when working with students in the classrooms. Examples of professional dress include dress pants, blouses, sweaters, skirts, and dresses, dress shirts and collared shirts (men). Please avoid flip flops, shorts, jeans, and low cut shirts. Please be punctual. If you will be late, please your cooperating teacher or phone the school ( ). If you will be absent due to illness or emergency, please your cooperating teacher or phone the school. Please sign in daily in the office when you arrive at Middle Road School. There is a log for Monmouth University students. Be sure to maintain confidentiality about students, families, or teachers at all times. You may be privy to information and should not be discussed with anyone except appropriate school personnel. Please maintain appropriate relationships with the students. You are an authority figure to them. They will refer to you as Ms. or Miss Smith. Contact your cooperating teacher as soon as you receive your assignment to discuss your requirements. Please be respectful to your cooperating teacher, as you are a guest in their classroom. They are there to teach their students, and give you a wonderful learning experience. Accept constructive criticism, as it will help you on your journey to becoming a teacher. Field Experience Activities Discuss with your cooperating teacher required activities for the semester (required lesson(s) to be taught, read alouds, etc.). When preparing to teach a lesson, be sure to provide your cooperating teacher a copy of your lesson plan at least 3-5 days prior to teaching the lesson for approval. Your cooperating teacher will discuss with you and ask you to actively participate in the classroom. The following list outlines some possible activities: Develop a bulletin board idea and execute Lead a guided reading group Assist struggling students in a small group Challenge advanced students in small group Give a spelling test or lead spelling activities Reinforce previously taught skills/concepts in a small group

5 Assist with Writer s Workshop Develop a learning center as a make and take Assist in the classroom for science experiments/investigations Read aloud to the students with purpose in mind Vocabulary development activities Plan and teach at least one lesson Practice math facts/play math games Circulate throughout the classroom to help keep students on task Read tests aloud to struggling students Administer assessments to students due to absences, or as stipulated in Individualized Education Plans After school Tutoring Some university students will be tutoring Middle Road School students as part of university courses. You will be assigned a student to work with for each tutoring session. The student will be provided with materials by their homeroom teacher. The sessions begin at 3:30 and runs until 4:15. Students are walked up to the front hall of the school to be dismissed to their parent/guardian. School personnel will be available to assist in the dismissal process. Pen Pal Project Literacy and Social Studies classes will be participating in a Pen Pal Project. You will be paired with a third grade student to write to weekly. There is a writing folder that you create with your pen pal to store all of your letters. Each week there is a specific prompt to write about. If possible, pen pals will meet 3-5 times during the semester to engage in some shared writing. It is a wonderful way for you to learn with the Middle Road students and make a special connection with a student. Immigration Day/Colonial Day Social Studies students will have the opportunity to learn about creating and executing authentic learning activities. Each year the third and fourth grade classes participate in Immigration or Colonial Day and you will be interacting with the students by helping to create the event. This is a memorable learning activity for all involved and we look forward to your participation.
