1 AP PSYCHOLOGY VACATION WORK PACKET UNIT 7A: MEMORY You need to complete the following by class on January 3, 2012: Preread the APA Content Standards to anticipate the content of this unit. Read and take notes on Unit 7A, pp Complete the lengthy vocabulary chart where you provide definitions and an example for each term. Complete the Multiple Choice Questions at the back of the Unit, on pages Good practice. Complete the FRQ in bullet point form only. Aim to earn the 10 points that can be awarded. Read and mark up the Smithsonian magazine article, How Our Brains Make Memories. Revisit the APA Standards once you have completed the tasks above and add CCQs to each standard to help you identify what you have learned and where you still need clarification. Find some time to relax and enjoy the vacation!

2 Unit 7A: MEMORY This whole packet is due on Tuesday, January 3, Unit Preview: In this unit we will examine the memory system in our brains. The following list of content and learning standards from the American Psychological Association is your goal sheet for what you will read, learn, memorize, and then be able to explain and analyze. This packet is designed to take you through Unit 7A step by step and help you grasp the content, terms, concepts, and applications. APA Content Standard Area: Memory After concluding this unit, students understand: 1. Encoding of memory 2. Storage of memory 3. Retrieval of memory Content Standard 1: Encoding of memory 1.1 Identify factors that influence encoding. 1.2 Characterize the difference between shallow (surface) and deep (elaborate) processing. 1.3 Discuss strategies for improving the encoding of memory. Content Standard 2: Storage of memory 2.1 Describe the differences between working memory and long-term memory. 2.2 Identify and explain biological processes related to how memory is stored. 2.3 Discuss types of memory and memory disorders (e.g., amnesias, dementias). 2.4 Discuss strategies for improving the storage of memories.
