1 CPMT 1347 Computer System Peripherals COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: CPMT 1347Computer System Peripherals COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION: Theory and practices involved in computer peripherals, operation and maintenance techniques, and specialized test equipment. Moodle/Program/Course Orientation and Laboratory Safety Review B. Peripheral Ports and Interfaces C. Solid State Device and Hard-Disk drives D. Scanners Printers and Printer Plotters E. Sound Adapters F. Communication devices G. Displays H. Storage In each unit you will be given a lecture/demonstration and then be expected to perform the assignments for each unit. Each assignment will be demonstrated and explained so that you can then attempt and complete it. After each unit, there will be a knowledge exam and a performance exam. Each exam is based on the information discussed during the lecture, the reading assignments and the lab assignments given. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Student Learning Outcomes for Critical Thinking At the end of this course the students will have demonstrated the ability to: a) Identify the essential question, issue, and/or problem with computer and computer related equipment.

2 b) Ability to gather data relevant to the essential question, issue, and/or problem. c) Communicate any or all parts of the above process in written or oral form. Student Learning Outcomes for Introduction to Computer Maintenance At the end of this course the student will have demonstrated the ability to: d) Define, and recognize terms, expressions and phrases associated with computers. e) Use advanced computer commands in various computer applications. f) Demonstrate laboratory safety g) Identify the hardware that makes up a computer system and provide their purpose. h) Identify the knowledge and the skills needed to be employed as a Computer Support Specialist. i) Ability to disassemble and assemble a functioning computer. j) Ability to install an computer operating system on a functioning computer. Towards the end of the semester the student will apply the proper procedures for the assembly, OS installation and configuration of a computer system. Towards the end of the semester the student will troubleshoot and determine the cause of the problem (hardware or software) and apply the proper resolution. During the semester, each student will apply new skills of laboratory safety during each computer laboratory.

Computer Service Tool Kit included with anti-static wrist strap 2. Power Supply tester 3. Flash Drive (min. 16 GB). None CSMT majors must obtain the following: 1. One medium Phillips screwdriver 2. One medium flat head screwdriver

GRADING CRITERIA: GRADING SCALE Quizzes 5% =A Unit Exams 10% =B Laboratory Assignments 25% =C Presentation 30% =D Comprehensive Final Exam 30% Less than 60 =F *Note: Unit Exams and Final Exam include theory and performance exams based reading, lecture, laboratory, and outside assignments. CSMT DEPARTMENT PARTICIPATION POLICY: Student participation is defined in the current TSTC Harlingen Campus Catalog and Student Handbook; and is expanded to include: answering and asking questions during class; completing all Assignments, Activities, Technical Summaries, Tests and Quizzes; and attending classes as scheduled. Additionally, students are expected to read all assigned materials, and come to class prepared for dialog. Your average will be provided by your instructor after each unit exam. Any other questions concerning your grade, average or progress in coursework will not be discussed during class; you must make an appointment to discuss your progress with your Instructor. Note: Lecture Presentations have been modified to support the instruction of this Course and cannot be used in place of reading the book. EMERGENCY/SAFTEY STATEMENT In the event of an emergency, students should familiarize themselves with building and classrooms emergency exits/evacuation routes and be able to locate the nearest fire extinguisher. When an emergency alarm is activated, students should immediately leave the classroom, exit the building, and go to a designated safe area until clearance is given to go back into the building. Weekly attendance will be valued as one full assignment. Late attendance will result in a deduction of points. CONDUCT: In addition to the Student Conduct and Discipline section of the Campus Catalog: Cell phones will be turned OFF or set to vibrate. Texting is prohibited in class especially during exams/quizzes. The Instructor must give permission before taking photos and/or videos in class. Eating and drinking is prohibited in classrooms and laboratories. Cheating and/or copying will earn a grade of zero (0) for all parties involved. Cheating and/or copying are determined by the Instructor, usually with the concurrence of another Instructor. You may appeal your grade, by making an appointment with the Program Chair. No downloading of games or software is allowed, and no game playing on lab computers. Printing material must be related to the course. Any other material must be approved by the Instructor. While class is in session, whether lecture or lab, student will refrain from messaging, using any social media or answering cell phone calls (If you have an emergency step into the hallway quietly). CARE AND USE OF EQUIPMENT:

7 Students are expected to exhibit reasonable care and safety in the use of all computer systems and related equipment. This includes production machines, trainers (teardown machines), and all peripherals. This also includes any equipment that is considered nonfunctioning or used as demonstration units. Any wanton destruction of equipment, either willfully or by carelessness, may result in a "0" for an assignment or exam, dismissal from class, or dismissal from the CSMT program of study. DUE DATES: Due dates for assignments will be provided by the Instructor, in class and posted on the Course website. Assignments will not be accepted after the due date, and a grade of zero (0) will result. TESTS/QUIZZES: Tests - Only excused absences will be allowed to take make-up tests. Excused absences must be communicated to the instructor through or voic , and will be at the discretion of the Instructor. You must make an appointment to take a make-up test; failure to make-up a test will result in a grade of zero (0). Quizzes - There are no advanced notices for quizzes and no make-ups. Quizzes are usually timed, and late arrivals must complete the quiz before the designated stop time. ESTABLISHING A SAFE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT: Learning takes place within a safe environment, and a safe environment is one that allows for individual and group differences and encourages engaged honest discussions where everyone feels comfortable to share and explore ideas. In the course of class discussions, it is quite possible that disagreements will arise. Disagreements are welcomed in the spirit of critical academic and technical exchange, however it is important to be respectful of others points of view, whether you agree with them or not. TSTC and the CSMT department will not tolerate derogatory comments based on race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality. CURRICULUM: Any changes to the Course Curriculum will be provided via the CSMT website or in writing to the student. The course Instructor may have additional requirements, in addition to this syllabus, which will be discussed in class or posted on the Course website. These additional requirements, DO NOT cancel any information or regulations within this syllabus; rather, they provide additional detail and/or enhance this syllabus. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TSTC is not liable for the theft or damage of any students personal items such as pen drives, backpacks, purses, cell phones, laptops, and computers. Other personal items are not excluded from this statement. It is our recommendation that you secure your items before, during, and/or after class. Any lost items that is considered to be mass storage devices,(e.g. flash/pin drives, portable hard drives, cell phones, mp3 players, etc.) that has any potential of personal information stored upon them, will be turned over to campus police to

8 be secured if found. These items can be retrieved from campus security in the Auxiliary building (Bldg. A ).
