1 APES Summer Work PURPOSE: Like most science courses, APES involves math, data analysis, and graphing. Simple math concepts, like dealing with scientific notation, unit conversions, and percent increases, cannot also be taught along with the curriculum. It is assumed that students have BASIC math skills when entering an AP level science course. You should become adept at math involving adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers written in scientific notation WITHOUT THE USE OF A CALCULATOR (these are not allowed on the AP exam). The difference between a 4 and 5 could be something as simple as an addition problem. It sounds simple, but in my experience, math often makes or breaks an AP exam score. So Your summer assignment is to practice math skills that will be required for our course. If you are having trouble with these basic math skills, you need to review, practice, and practice some more until you are competent at these BASIC skills. Your grade and AP score will depend on it. THE ASSIGNMENT: 1. Show ALL steps in determining the answers. Circle your answers so that they are easily identifiable when the assignment is graded. No work = no points. 2. Include units, where appropriate, for all answers. 3. Graphs must include labels, units, titles, and be properly formatted. 4. Complete problems without a calculator (there is no way that I will really know if you did this or not however, your AP score and grade in my class will definitely reveal that information very clearly). DUE DATE: The second Friday after school starts, September 8, 2017 at the beginning of the period. Any work turned in late will be reduced to 50% credit and will only be accepted for five days after the due date. Keep in mind that we will be covering other topics during the first two weeks of school so you will be very overwhelmed if you procrastinate and choose to complete the SUMMER work after summer has ended. TEST: There will be a test covering these topics on September 8, Anyone who cannot cope with mathematics is not fully human. 4 Part IV: Averages make sure you can find an average from a data set without the use of a calculator 16. Find the average of 4.56, 7.8, 1345, and 9.8 Part V: Percentages and Percent Change make sure you can calculate percentages of a whole and percent increases and decreases Reminder percent change follows the formula: new number old number X 100 old number ,000 acres of a 40,000 acre forest in burned in a forest fire. What percentage of the forest was burned? 18. In a small oak tree, the biomass of insects makes up 3000kg. This is 4% of the total biomass of the tree. What is the total biomass of the tree? 19. 5 Part VI: Graphing make sure you know how to make a graph, complete with title, accurate labels, appropriate scaling on the X and Y axis, and how to tell what is the independent and dependent variable on a graph Ethylene is a plant hormone that causes fruit to mature.
