3 Why are Common Core State Standards important? Currently, every state has its own set of academic standards, meaning public education students in each state have standards at different levels All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers in other states, but also with students from around the world State led initiative coordinated by NGA (National Governors Association) and CCSSO (Council of Chief State School Officers) Common Core and CASAS Standards 1

4 Common Core State Standards Development Process College and Career Readiness standards developed in Summer 2009 K 12 learning progressions were developed, based on the College and Career Readiness standards Multiple rounds of feedback from states, teachers, researchers, higher education, and the general public Final Common Core State Standards released on June 2, 2010 To date, 46 states and the District of Columbia have adopted them. 7 Why do we care about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)? A golden opportunity for adult education to align with new K- 12 standards that are being used in almost all states An opportunity for adult education to be and be perceived as -- an integral part of the education system Common Core State Standards contain critical skills that adults need to transition to career and/or post-secondary training We can align with the K-12 standards but hold true to our commitment to be relevant and appropriate for adult learners Common Core and CASAS Standards 5

10 Development of CASAS Content Standards CASAS, at the request of the National CASAS Consortium, worked with representatives from 13 states to develop content standards in ABE, ESL, and ASE as part of the formal CASAS system. An extensive review of existing basic skills content standards was conducted, including standards from 9 states and 4 countries. 11 About CASAS Content Standards Content standards support instructional planning that helps students master a specific competency and attain their goals. Content standards help instructors identify the underlying reading, math or listening basic skills associated at specific proficiency levels that should be taught in the context of CASAS Competencies. 11 Common Core and CASAS Standards 9

Teach students to read strategically...to slow down to understand key points and to re-read passages 4. Place a premium on student stamina and persistence 5. In 2010, CASAS commissioned Questar, a respected test and measurement consulting firm, to study the alignment of the CASAS Content Standards to the Common Core State Standards. 36 Common Core and CASAS Standards 34

38 Alignment to CASAS Reading Content Standards There is a high level of alignment between the CASAS Reading Content Standards and the Common Core Reading and Language CCR standards. Of the 167 CASAS Reading Content Standards coded at NRS ABE Level 3 (Int. Basic Skills) or higher/ NRS ESL Level 5 (High Int. ESL) or higher, only 4 (2%) of the CASAS Reading Content Standards do not have a direct match with the CCR Reading and Language Standards. 38 Common Core and CASAS Standards 36

41 Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Go to Standards.pdf for a complete, on-line list of the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core Math Practice Standards are processes and proficiencies that educators at all levels should seek to develop in all students (Common Core, page 6). They are not content standards to be taught, but rather guiding practices of the content. The Common Core Math Content Standards include six conceptual categories, also known as domains or larger groups of skills. 41 Common Core and CASAS Standards 39

42 Alignment to CASAS Math Content Standards CASAS is completing the first draft of a comparison of CASAS Math Content Standards to Common Core Standards. The Math documents are expected to be released in Common Core and CASAS Standards 40
