Making Confident Decisions STOP SECOND GUESSING YOURSELF Kim McDevitt Power Packs Project September 2015 Americans make 70 conscious decisions a day! * *A recent study from Columbia University decision researcher Sheena Lyengar 2012 Lots of Choices!!!!! Too many choices not only makes a decision harder but also makes it more likely that we'll regret our selection. 1
When Was The Last Time You Were Faced To Make a Major Decision? 1. What was the process you went through to come to a decision? 2. Who did you talk to before you made the decision? 3. What feelings were associated with the decision making process? 4. How long did it take you to make the decision; how long before you took action steps toward your decision once it was made? 5. How do you feel today about the decision you made? 4 Types of Decision Making Styles What is Your Default Decision Making Style? Directive Analytic Makes quick decisions, doesn t consult with others, is task focused, structured, impulsive, definitive, introverted Researches, agonizes over decisions, needs to be in control, thorough, involves team Conceptual Open minded, extroverted, big picture, exploratory, strategic Behavioral Allows others to influence decision making process, bases decisions on intuition and emotion 2
Directive This form of decision making relies on a rational and autocratic style that results in using own knowledge, experience and judgment to choose the best alternative Pros Rational and structured Quick decision maker Allow others to make decisions Excellent verbal communicator Cons Become anxious even paralyzed making decisions. Often inflexible Short term results rather than long term results Team may not be on board with the action Don t have all the facts to make decisions Task focused, structured Efficient and expedient Low tolerance Not necessarily effective Analytic An analytic style decision maker is innovative and likes to analyze large amounts of data before making a decision. They are adaptable and can function well even under unique or challenging situations. Pros Thorough in the process, acquiring a lot of data and information Involves team in the process Solutions are detailed and comprehensive Understand every aspect of a problem Results can be innovative Cons May be slow in the process Want to control every aspect of the process Too much information to sift through Paralyzed to make decisions Conceptual They are achievement oriented, explores new strategies and like to think far into the future when making important decisions. Pros Pass intuitive judgements while identifying emerging patterns Creative problem solver, outside the box thinker, exploratory Achievement oriented Exploratory. Gathering and evaluating information from many different perspectives. Visionary, big picture, long term goal oriented Risk taker Cons May become too determined and inflexible with their decision May meet resistance on ideas They seek external praise Can be overwhelmed when faced with conflicting ideas May oversee the details that are necessary to complete tasks If not thought out, may be detrimental 3
Behavioral People who use a behavioral decision making style are very interested in making sure that everyone works well together and avoids conflict. The evaluate decisions intuitively and emotionally Pros Group decision making approach Considers how decisions will affect others Strength in reading others Looks at the effects of the decision on a broader level. Cons May be too considerate when decisions should be made by the leader May have difficulty making decisions that could generate resistance or negatively impact people May feel guilt about decisions Can feel extremely pressured when asked to make controversial or unilateral decisions How Can Understanding Your Decision Making Style Help? By understanding your personal decision making style, it is possible to make adjustments according to the situation and results you are working towards. Do you hide from making decisions? This before that Designing at the whiteboard Overcomplicating and endless polishing Collecting what everyone else has to say about it Omitting your own story Getting more and more information 4
Fear Lack of confidence Inner Critic Lack of knowledge Lack of Distrust We All Have Inner Critics! What does yours look like? What does yours sound like? Who does yours sound like? 5
Inner Critic vs. Realistic Thinking Inner Critic Makes definite pronouncements about the situation Has no interest in actual evidence Thinks and speaks in black and white terms Asks binary yes/no questions. Is it possible? Am I qualified? Is repetitive Focuses on problems/areas of lack Speaks in an anxious tone Realistic Thinking Asks curious questions about the situation Interested in gathering evidence to inform conclusions Is able to deal with complexity and gray areas Asks helpful, open minded questions. How might it be possible? What parts of this looks possible? What do I need to make it possible? Is forward moving Seeks solutions Speaks in a calmer tone Moving away from Inner Critic toward our Inner Mentor Is a guide or compass Has a very different and very helpful perspective on the current challenge and dilemmas you face Reminds of us about our own right paths. Is a voice of wisdom, calm, and guidance that we can find answers time and time again Move Forward Make a decision and take action! Trust! 6
Where do I start? Tips Have lots of information Don t become paralyzed Get Some Support- its ok to be vulnerable Trust your capacity for a new choice Wait- but not too long, you will never have all the information you need. Unsure, don t make a decision Forgive yourself No regrets Believe you made the right decision at the moment, don t look back Start To Think Differently! Every time you start second guessing yourself Remind yourself that you thoroughly thought things through and have made the best decision. Remember how you got here and think about all the signs that pointed you in this direction. Refocus on your goals and all the great things you will accomplish. Think about all you have already accomplished and give yourself credit for every little step you have taken. 7
You are here for a reason. Don t rest on your laurels, keep competitive, keep restless, keep moving, don t be complacent. You have to love what you do don t settle, better CEOs love what they do make decisions easier Where do you want to be? Thank You For Joining Me Today K I M M C D E V I T T E X E C U T I V E D I R E C T O R P O W E R P A C K S P R O J E C T K I O W E R P A C K S P R O J E C T. O R G
