READY TO WORK PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR GUIDE PART I LESSON TITLE: Precision Measurement METHOD: Lecture, Guided Discussion EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE: Given different precision measurement tool names and drawings, determine their uses and interpret their readings. SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES: a. Identify the different types of precision measurement tools. b. Determine the appropriate uses for different precision measurement tools. c. Interpret different readings given pictures of different precision measurement tools. PURPOSE: This lesson to be used for students to become familiar with and read precision measurement equipment. Students will learn to read steel rules and both standard and metric micrometers and calipers. Students will also become familiar with inside and outside calipers, hole gages, telescoping gages, and squares. Students will not perform measurements on actual components. This lesson is based on information that is taught in pre-employment programs throughout Alabama. INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS: PowerPoint Presentation, Precision Measurement HANDOUTS: Precision Measurement, Alabama Industrial Development Training, May 2006 (This is a reading assignment prior to the start of this lesson.) METHOD OF EVALUATION: INSTRUCTIONAL REFERENCES: Precision Measurement with Answers, Alabama Industrial Development Training, May STRATEGY: This lesson advances in the same sequence as the AIDT manual. It is important that the students first understand how to read a steel rule prior to progressing to other topics. After the students complete the rulers, they will discuss different types of helper tools. Helper tools are frequently needed along with other precision measurement tools to get accurate measurements. Then the students will cover micrometers and vernier calipers. SAFETY: None

PART II LESSON PLAN (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-1, Module Title, Operations) ATTENTION: Instructor developed. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-2, Lesson Title, Precision Measurement) MOTIVATION: Much of the information in this lesson is the same information you would learn in most pre-employment programs. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-3, Overview) OVERVIEW: Instructor developed. TRANSITION: We will start this lesson with a discussion of basic steel rules. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-4, MPa) MPa. (K) the proper method of reading and caring for different steel rules. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: USE THE AIDT PRECISION MEASUREMENT MANUAL THROUGHOUT THIS LESSON. THIS LESSON IS INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPED. ALL INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THE MAIN POINT SHOULD BE COVERED. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-5 THROUGH 1-9, Steel Rules) Discuss Steel Rules beginning on page 1 and the top of page 2 of the manual. Provide examples as necessary. Do not leave this lesson until the students understand how to read a Fractional Inch Rule. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: THERE SHOULD BE NO NEED TO REVIEW METHODS OF REDUCING FRACTIONS UNLESS THE STUDENTS HAVE DIFFICULTY READING THE STEEL RULES. IF AFTER EXPLAINING STEEL RULES AND COMPLETING EXERCISE 2 YOU DISCOVER THE STUDENTS HAVE NOT REDUCED THEIR FRACTIONS ON THEIR OWN, REVIEW PAGES 2 AND 3. Complete Exercise 2 on page 4. Review Exercise 2. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: Discuss Decimal Inch Rule on page 4 and the top of page 5. Do not move on until the students understand how to read a Decimal Inch Rule. Complete Exercise 3 on page 5.

Review Exercise 3. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: Discuss Metric Rule on page 5 and the top of page 6. Do not move on until the students understand how to read a Metric Rule. Complete Exercise 4 on page 6. Review Exercise 4. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-10 THROUGH 1-14, Steel Rule Usage) Discuss the proper way to use a steel rule (pages 6 and 7). Discuss the proper care of steel rules (pages 7 and 8) (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-15 THROUGH 1-19, Hooked Rules) Discuss Hooked Rules and some of the common uses (pages 8 and 9). TRANSITION: There are some helper tools that will make your measurements much more accurate. We will begin the discussion with Outside Calipers. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-20, MPb) MPb. (K) the proper method of using helper measuring tools. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-21 THROUGH 1-22, Calipers) Discuss the proper method of using Outside Calipers on page 10. Discuss the proper method of using Inside Calipers on pages 10 and 11. (OVERHEAD 1-23 THROUGH 1-24, Hole Gages) Discuss the proper method of using Hole Gages using pages 11 and 12. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-25 THROUGH 1-26, Telescoping) Discuss the proper method of using Telescoping Gages on pages 13 and top of page 14. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-27 THROUGH 1-29, Square) Discuss the proper method of using Solid Steel Squares on page 17 and 18. TRANSITION: All the helper tools are used in conjunction with other precision measurement tools. The most common helper tools are micrometers.

(COMPUTER SLIDE 1-30, MPc) MPc. (K) the proper method of reading and caring for micrometers. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-31, Micrometer Components) Discuss the components of an outside micrometer. (page 20) (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-32 THROUGH 1-36, Micrometer) Discuss how to read a standard micrometer. (page 20 through 22) Complete Exercise 4 on pages 23 and 24. Review Exercise 5. Discuss how to read metric micrometers on page 25. Complete Exercise 5 on page 26. Review Exercise 5. Discuss the proper care of micrometers on page 28. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-37, Inside Micrometers) Discuss inside micrometers on pages 29 and 30. Explain that these are read similarly to the outside micrometer. TRANSITION: Micrometers are often used by machinists and are just one method used to get precision measurements. Production line workers often use calipers. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-38, MPd) MPd. (K) the proper method of reading calipers. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-39 THROUGH 1-44, Vernier Calipers) Discuss the components of a vernier caliper. (page 31) Discuss how to read a vernier caliper. (pages 31 through 33) Complete Exercise 7 on page 34. Discuss types of vernier calipers on page 35.

INSTRUCTOR NOTE: DO NOT GO INTO THE PROPER METHOD TO READ A METRIC VERNIER CALIPER. THESE ARE VERY UNCOMMON IN THE WORKPLACE. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-45, Summary) SUMMARY: INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPED.
