1 READY TO WORK PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR GUIDE PART I LESSON TITLE: Precision Measurement METHOD: Lecture, Guided Discussion EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE: Given different precision measurement tool names and drawings, determine their uses and interpret their readings. SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES: a. Identify the different types of precision measurement tools. b. Determine the appropriate uses for different precision measurement tools. c. Interpret different readings given pictures of different precision measurement tools. PURPOSE: This lesson to be used for students to become familiar with and read precision measurement equipment. Students will learn to read steel rules and both standard and metric micrometers and calipers. Students will also become familiar with inside and outside calipers, hole gages, telescoping gages, and squares. Students will not perform measurements on actual components. This lesson is based on information that is taught in pre-employment programs throughout Alabama. METHOD OF EVALUATION: INSTRUCTIONAL REFERENCES: Precision Measurement with Answers, Alabama Industrial Development Training, May STRATEGY: This lesson advances in the same sequence as the AIDT manual. It is important that the students first understand how to read a steel rule prior to progressing to other topics. After the students complete the rulers, they will discuss different types of helper tools. Helper tools are frequently needed along with other precision measurement tools to get accurate measurements. Then the students will cover micrometers and vernier calipers. SAFETY: None

(COMPUTER SLIDE 1-3, Overview) OVERVIEW: Instructor developed. TRANSITION: We will start this lesson with a discussion of basic steel rules. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-4, MPa) MPa. (K) the proper method of reading and caring for different steel rules. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: USE THE AIDT PRECISION MEASUREMENT MANUAL THROUGHOUT THIS LESSON. THIS LESSON IS INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPED. ALL INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THE MAIN POINT SHOULD BE COVERED. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-5 THROUGH 1-9, Steel Rules) Discuss Steel Rules beginning on page 1 and the top of page 2 of the manual. Provide examples as necessary. Do not leave this lesson until the students understand how to read a Fractional Inch Rule. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: THERE SHOULD BE NO NEED TO REVIEW METHODS OF REDUCING FRACTIONS UNLESS THE STUDENTS HAVE DIFFICULTY READING THE STEEL RULES. IF AFTER EXPLAINING STEEL RULES AND COMPLETING EXERCISE 2 YOU DISCOVER THE STUDENTS HAVE NOT REDUCED THEIR FRACTIONS ON THEIR OWN, REVIEW PAGES 2 AND 3. Complete Exercise 2 on page 4. Review Exercise 2. INSTRUCTOR NOTE: Discuss Decimal Inch Rule on page 4 and the top of page 5. Do not move on until the students understand how to read a Decimal Inch Rule. Complete Exercise 3 on page 5.

TRANSITION: There are some helper tools that will make your measurements much more accurate. We will begin the discussion with Outside Calipers. (COMPUTER SLIDE 1-20, MPb) MPb. TRANSITION: All the helper tools are used in conjunction with other precision measurement tools. The most common helper tools are micrometers.
