Investing in Professional Learning & Development: What Motivates You? Presenter: Maria Angala, NBCT AFT/WTU Teacher Leader Research Question: What motivates teachers to invest in professional learning and development and pursue accomplished teaching?

K (What do you already KNOW about this topic?) W (What else do you WANT to know?) L (What have you LEARNED from our presentation today?) D (What will you DO about the knowledge you have learned?)

Objectives: By the end of this session, we will: a.) analyze the data that motivates teachers to invest and participate in professional learning. b.) examine what the factors are and how they motivate the teachers. c.) develop recommendations to motivate teachers to pursue professional development.

Motivational concerns, while often alluded to in passing...remain a critical yet understudied component of teacher PD interventions.

If there was support in place, financially and PD-wise, I would feel able to do this. Otherwise it seems daunting. professional opportunity Yes I will take it for advancement and to improvement. Yes, I will take it for advancement and for improvement. This is the highest level as a teacher. Enhance my career I enjoy my craft and find that there are so many needs of students that are not being reached due to limited knowledge.

TURN & TALK: - Based on the data, what motivates the teachers to pursue professional development? - Can you share what will motivate you to invest your time in pursuing National Board Certification?

What motivates the teachers to pursue professional development? development? Usefulness for improving teaching practice Alignment with student learning, and student motivation Variety of PD formats and inclusion of teacher participation Administrative support is highly influential Teachers who were motivated were those who went into teaching for intrinsic and social reasons What recommendations can you give to teachers to invest their time in pursuing National Board Certification?

Are there other research studies related to this?

Teachers views on PD...will significantly influence their motivation to attend PD...[and will also influence] its implementation, sustainability and success in integrating the curriculum and accompanying strategies into teachers regular classroom practices... Teacher Motivation and Professional Development: A Guide to Resources by Laura J. Schieb & Stuart A. Karabenick Recent work on teacher motivation...provides evidence for links between teachers motivation and their engagement, commitment and persistence in teaching and their inclination to become involved in professional development. Teacher Motivation for Professional Development by Anne Marie Conley By figuring out what motivates teachers to pursue National Board Certification, districts may be able to encourage more teachers to apply for NBPTS district leaders and school administrators should also be interested in what motivates teachers both to begin and to complete this process. With this knowledge they would be able to encourage their teachers to pursue a professional development process and possible certification. The National Board for Professional Teaching Certification: Teacher Motivation, Benefits, Burdens by Lisa Renee Krause

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is a motivating PD because: It provides a foundation for all professional development in the school. It advances effective teaching. NBCTs are recognized as effective educators. Teachers who certify are often given monetary incentives from the state as well as from their local districts. NBCTs are often called upon to lead professional development meetings or mentor new candidates. NBCTs become part of a professional culture with a common pedagogical language, striving to use best practices strategies, and studying their content area.

K (What do you already KNOW about this topic?) W (What else do you WANT to know?) L (What have you LEARNED from our presentation today?) D (What will you DO about the knowledge you have learned?)

Did we meet our objectives? a.) Analyzed the data that motivates teachers to invest and participate in professional learning. b.) Examined what the factors are and how they motivate the teachers. c.) Developed recommendations to motivate teachers to pursue professional development.

Thank you for coming! (please send me an now from your celphone if you want a copy of my presentation. Thank you!)
