EXAMINATION FORMAT No open book Duration: 3 hours Format: Three questions of 50 marks each Answer any TWO questions. Each question is divided into sub-questions e.g. 10, 15, 25 Marks: 100 When writing exams, please pay special attention to the following: Your student number must be written correctly. Write down the correct module code. Read instructions carefully before you start writing. Please read questions carefully and only answer the questions asked. Pay attention to the action verbs at each question to give you an indication on how you should answer the question e.g. compare, critically discuss etc. Your answer should be complete. Don't leave out parts of questions. Where possible, give examples. Work which is neat, well-planned and well-structured is much easier to mark and will undoubtedly earn good marks. 2 Study Unit 1: Make use of the prescribed articles in your reader or any other additional articles to prepare the following question: List the main objections against the traditional, behaviouristic views of teaching and learning. Critically discuss whether you agree with the main objections against the traditional, behaviouristic views of teaching and learning. Based on your prescribed articles for this module, critically discuss the reasons for proposing the constructivist paradigm as an alternative to the behaviourist paradigm. Evaluate whether the typical classroom practice at your school is conducive to the practice of constructivist teaching methods. Give reasons for your arguments. E.g. are there enough resources, are teachers well trained, they type of learners, parents etc. Students who registered after June 2014 should use the following articles to answer the question on learning functions: Grösser, M Effective teaching: linking teaching to learning functions. Evaluate the six steps of the Direct Instruction Model with regard to its strong points for effective teaching. Study Unit 2: The basis for the Direct Instructional Model + concepts of training behaviour Discuss when is the Direct Instruction Model still appropriate to apply in a subject. Discuss the strong and weak points of this model with regard to teaching and learning. Evaluate the six steps of the Direct Instruction Model with regard to its strong points for effective teaching Give examples how you will use the following models in a subject. You must be able to list all the steps of the models and give examples of the content from your subject under each step of each model. The models are all in your prescribed book or reader and the Values Development model is in your study guide and reader. The Concept Development Model Values Development Model Jigsaw Evaluate whether the Value Development Model (VDM) is applicable in all subjects, particularly mathematics, science, technology, etc. Substantiate all your answers with relevant examples. 4 Identify, explain and illustrate each of the steps of the Value Development Model (VDM) in your subject. The development of problem-solving skills is a central learning outcome of all learning outcomes or objectives for all subjects. Explain how The Suchman Inquiry Model can be applied in a subject. You must know all the steps in the model and be able to give examples of the teacher and learners will do under each step. Specific examples and explanations from the lesson in the subject should be given. Study Unit 3: Identify and critically discuss how a teacher can use integrated assessment to contribute to the success of a teaching and learning programme. Study Unit 4: Construct a detailed mind map (with key words or phrases) or write an essay to illustrate an integrated approach towards effective strategic teaching. Important aspects of the following bullets below should be illustrated in the mind map or essay:. Intention of teaching The teacher and his/her role The learners and their role(s) The interactions taking place in the teaching situation The learning content and its role The context within which the teaching-learning takes place Assessment Use of instructional models and teaching strategies Explain what a strategic teaching approach is. Explain and motivate how you as an educator can adapt your integrated teaching approach to enable learners with differing learning needs (e.g. slow learners/ good learners) to attain the expected learning outcomes.
