3 National Research Council The overarching goal of our framework for K-12 science education is to ensure that by the end of 12th grade, all students have some appreciation of the beauty and wonder of science; possess sufficient knowledge of science and engineering to engage in public discussions on related issues; are careful consumers of scientific and technological information related to their everyday lives; are able to continue to learn about science outside school; and have the skills to enter careers of their choice, including (but not limited to) careers in science, engineering, and technology.

4 A Framework for Science (2011) The Framework is a broad description of the content and sequence of learning expected by students. It does not include detailed standards for each class level. Provides a vision for education in science that will help students to see how science is instrumental in addressing the major challenges confronting society: GENERATING SUFFICIENT ENERGY, PREVENTING AND TREATING DISEASES, MAINTAINING SUPPLIES OF CLEAN WATER AND FOOD, SOLVING PROBLEMS OF GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

5 Development of the Framework The framework is built on the notion of learning as a developmental progression The framework focuses on a limited number of core ideas in science (and engineering) The framework emphasizes that learning about science involves integration of the knowledge of scientific explanations (content knowledge) and the practices needed to engage in scientific inquiry
