Michael Schuster Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Students will be able evaluate the general culture, including the political and social structures, as well as the visual arts and architecture, the literature, music, religions and philosophies of the era under consideration. 2. Students will be able appraise the various geographical elements which impacts all cultures and societies, no matter the era. 3. Students will be able evaluate the contributions of the major historical figures of the era under study. Course Format: Humanities 6 is an interdisciplinary program in the liberal arts, which covers an historical period such as the Renaissance from the perspectives of philosophy, art, music, literature, architecture, science, etc. This course is primarily lecture-based, with illustrations and video, when appropriate. Materials included in lectures should be referenced in any papers due for this class. Please bring your reader to every class; it is especially needed when literary selections will be discussed. Read the text before coming to class. The reader consists of general background information and literary selections. The literary selections are not optional. They will be discussed in class after you have read them.

Please turn off all ringers, bells, and tones for text messages. If you find you cannot continue attending the class, please withdraw officially through the Pierce College website. The last day to drop with a W on line for Summer 2017 is available on the Pierce College website. Missed Classes: If you know ahead of time that you will be missing class, feel free to me. However, please obtain material you will have missed from a fellow student. Get to know a study buddy! I would also suggest that you actively participate in study groups outside of class. And if special circumstances arise that affect your attendance, feel free to discuss them with me. If you feel that some material may cause you to feel uncomfortable, speak with me for an alternative assignment and I will gladly comply. If applicable, a late assignment will receive a lower grade for each class it is late. Calendar This class will focus the historical period of 1850 through today, from the perspectives of philosophy, art, music, literature, architecture, science, etc. mainly in Western civilization. However, we will also discuss cultures within Asia, Africa, and South America as appropriate.
