When your brain attaches meaning and forms together, you learn it better (and it s usually more interesting). Sample activity. We ll do an activity together (in English) to show you an example of something we might do in French. Imagine this is in a language you don t know. INTRO. The Olympic Games just finished. Are you familiar with the Olympic Games? The Olympic Games are a series of sporting competitions that happen every two years either in the summer or in the winter with people from all around the world. They have a variety of sports, activities like cycling (when you go really fast on a bike), swimming (when you go across a pool), soccer (when you kick a ball with your foot, like Mia Hamm or Pele), and so on. What about you, do you like the Olympics? INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY. What do you think about the Olympics? Take one minute to decide which sentence most closely matches your opinion of the Olympics. Note the number and write the sentence down. 2. I love the Olympics! They re my favorite sporting competition! 1. I like the Olympics so-so, they re okay but not my favorite. 0. I hate the Olympics, I m very glad they re finally over! GROUP ACTIVITY. Now get into a group of 3 people. Each person should say what their opinion is you should say the number and read the sentence. Then add a sentence or two of your own to explain your opinion. Example 2. I love the Olympics! They re my favorite sporting competition! [ ]I think the Olympics are exciting because I love sports in general and there are so many different events to watch. [etc.] I will ask each group their opinions about the Olympics so we can figure out the average score for the class, to see how popular the Olympics are in your group and for the whole class. WHOLE CLASS ACTIVITY. Now please tell me what your group thinks of the Olympics What is the score that you gave for the Olympics? (For example, I gave the Olympics a two.) What was one reason you or a classmate gave to explain why you do / don t like the Olympics? (For example, I think the Olympic games are great because I can find out who are the best athletes in the world.)

6 If we had done this activity in French, you would have practiced a lot of different things new words (the word Olympics, the names of sports, etc.) how to talk about preferences (I love, I like, I hate, etc.) Intro to numbers and counting (two, one and a half, etc.) expressing opinions/explaining (I think, because, etc.) culture (what the Olympics are, some sports in the Olympics) It s possible to practice structures and words while still using language to communicate in the language (for example, French). For next time 1. Please buy access to the Supersite Plus and create your account. If you need a grace period until funds come in, please let me know.
