The course spans one academic year (August-May) over two semesters for a total of 15 credit hours. This course focuses on the integration of public health disciplines in understanding and addressing public health issues and challenges. The course is designed to introduce students to the core disciplines of public health; to build knowledge and skills in these core areas, and to integrate the core disciplines through the examination and analysis of specific public health issues. The course will be structured around a series of topical modules, each focusing on a specific issue in public health while providing clear illustrations of the roles, responsibilities, concepts and methods specific to each discipline and the integration of these in achieving a full understanding of the issue in its public health context. The course will be taught by an inter-disciplinary faculty from across the school supplemented by guest lectures from professionals in the surrounding public health community. Lecture sessions will be complemented by weekly lab sessions that employ various exercises to enhance critical thinking and to demonstrate acquisition of knowledge and application of skills learned through lectures, readings, assignments and discussions to the analysis of public health and health-related issues and challenges. Performance on homework and lab assignments, quizzes and final exams will be used to assess student progress toward achievement of learning objectives. Weekly help sessions will provide opportunities for assistance. Students will evaluate each module of the course and the course as a whole each semester.
