Born the son of a Brazilian taxi driver, Juan Enricos has become one of the best-known ballet dancers in the world and the only Latin-American principal dancer The National Ballet in Moscow has ever had. One of 10 children, Juan grew up in a poor part of Brasilia. By the time he was nine he was in trouble at school. His father decided to get him away from his group of friends. A distant relative was sending his children to ballet school and his father thought it would also be good for Juan. Juan wanted to be a footballer. He thought ballet was boring and just for girls. But he changed his mind after he went to see the National Ballet of Brazil. He loved the way male dancers jumped and flew through the air. He started to work hard at ballet and when he was 17, his career began after he had entered a competition in Austria and where he came first out of 137 dancers. Juan says that even poor boys like him can learn from the best ballet teachers in Brazil, which is excellent. This is because the lessons are free.
