Photo by Marie Flickinger County approves Beamer extension Dobie s Boudra retires, again By Jay Do The end of the academic year saw the retirement of J. Frank Dobie High School s Trish Boudra one of the school s most distinguished teachers. Boudra s career as an educator began shortly after graduating from Harding University in Searcy, Ark., Trish Boudra in After relocating to Texas, she saw her first year as a teacher in the school year when she was employed at Dobie High School as a communications applications teacher. Boudra s career was put on hold as she took the opportunity to start a family and raise her children. On Tuesday, June 24, the Harris County Commissioners Court voted to approve funding to design and construct an extension of Beamer Road from west of Tall Ships Lane to West Bay Area Boulevard in Precinct 1. The work would extend the area thoroughfare by roughly one mile. Originally proposed in 2010, the project will be done in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation. The endeavor will be done in addition to a joint project that will widen Beamer north of Tall Ships. The project will widen roughly 2.6 miles of Beamer from two lanes to four lanes from Dixie Farm Road to Tall Ships. At press time, it was unclear when construction would begin. Police arrest 3 burglary suspects Three men were arrested Monday, June 23, after allegedly attempting to break into an auto dealership in the block of the Gulf Freeway at Fuqua. According to police, officers were dispatched to the dealership around 2:30 a.m. when an alarm company spotted three or four suspects inside the business via security cameras. Police said the men were using pry tools to attempt to break into a safe room. When police arrived, one of the suspects, Emanuel Beal, 28, was immediately taken into custody, as two other suspects fled on foot and ran across the freeway. The second suspect, Jesse Smith, 25, was found hiding in a business park across the freeway and taken into custody. The third suspect, George Edward Turner, 27, was later found by a K-9 unit, as he was hiding in some nearby bushes. All three suspects were charged with burglary of a business and evading arrest. It would be nearly 20 years before Boudra reentered the workforce. Her career resumed during the school year and would continue up until the school year. During this 22-year streak, Boudra would rise to become one of the most prominent teachers in the history of the Pasadena Independent School District. While Boudra was employed at Dobie, she was involved in many of the school s other activities, including coaching the academic decathlon and debate teams. Trish Boudra is one of Dobie s longtime teachers and legends that will be sorely missed in the halls of J. Frank Dobie High School, said Principal Franklin Moses. Trish was one of those teachers whose passion for content was only surpassed by her passion of the students. While being given the honor of Teacher of the Year is no small feat in itself, Boudra was given this honor for the third time in her career dur- Continued on Page 2A Nguyen, 14, dies while out of town Kerrington Nguyen died unexpectedly the evening of Wednesday, June 25, while staying with her grandparents in Dallas. Nguyen, 14, had just completed the eighth grade at Beverly Hills Intermediate and was planning to attend the Pasadena Independent School District s new Nguyen career and technical center. Nguyen was a very ambitious student, participating in multiple extracurricular activities, including the dance team. Beverly Hills Principal Stacey Barber remembers Nguyen fondly. Kerrington was our morning announcer for the school year and was a breath of fresh air every time she walked into my office, Barber said. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers as they are going through this very difficult time. While initial plans called for a local visitation and funeral, Nguyen s family has now made arrangements in Dallas. Savala appointed to PISD board Animal control causes confusion By Jay Do Numerous accounts of attacks by stray animals on local residents have brought attention to the issue of animal control. While attention has been paid to the issue and changes to the animal control agency have been made, stray animals continue to be a difficult issue to resolve entirely due to their numbers and movability. An increasing number of stray and aggressive animals on the road has led many citizens to agree on one thing. The stray animal population is growing out of control, and decisive action must be taken by local animal control agencies. The issue is mainly centered on loose pit bulls that continue to plague the South Belt community. While several residents have made calls to local authorities for help, their efforts have proved fruitless. Residents were told by local police and animal control representatives that little can be done if the animals do not physically attack anybody. Three main animal control agencies are responsible for the stray animal population in and around Houston: Harris County Animal Control, Sometimes tragedies bring out the best in people. Everado Larry Savala, Pasadena Independent School District s newly appointed board member, is one shining example of that. Savala s son, Larry, was tragically killed about six years ago. In honor of his son, Savala affectionately spearheaded several efforts to bring about change to the Pasadena community. My family and I decided to use this as an opportunity to help as many people as we possibly can, he said. A Pasadena resident for 25 years, Savala was sworn in as the newest board member for the district, filling a spot vacated by Jerry Ross Speer, who resigned after serving for 14 years. One of my main goals is to listen to parents, he said. As a Spanish speaker, I have a unique opportunity to hear the visions parents have for their children and help make decisions that meet the needs of students. A husband, father of four and grandfather of five, Savala understands the importance of raising awareness about issues affecting families in crisis and their surrounding communities. In 2004, Savala developed the Hispanic Family Conference to educate professionals on how to effectively communicate and serve the Hispanic community. Through this annual conference he has trained more than 1,000 counselors, social workers, probation officers and members of community, government and faith based organizations who attend the conference from cities across the U.S. Savala believes that a strong community is the foundation for success in a school system and has developed groups for agencies seeking a better understanding of Hispanic communities. He partnered with the U.S Department of Education and the U.S Department of Health and Human Services to bring key Hispanic leaders together for insight on serving Hispanic families across the nation. Savala was honored by Congress, and the City of Houston and received the President s Award for Volunteerism. In 2006, he was selected by the U.S. Department of Education to have a part in the Helping America s Youth Conference. He also founded the Latina Expo, a conference that takes place in Pasadena and inspires middle school girls to achieve educational success. More than 3,000 middle school girls attended this conference during the spring. He often shares on the important role fathers have in the development of their children. In 2009, Savala gathered leaders in the fatherhood and healthy marriage movements to connect them with government leaders in Texas for a summit on families in their communities. Strategic partnerships were developed at the summit, and those partnerships are having a great impact in Texas communities. Continued on Page 2A Houston Bureau of Animal Regulation and Control and Pasadena Animal Control. These three agencies divide coverage of the Houston area among sections with rough boundaries. This is where the issue begins. The three animal control agencies operate based on vague boundaries and divisions of the area. For example, the intersection of Beamer and Scarsdale is covered by all three agencies, while the intersection of Beamer and Beltway 8 is covered only by Houston BARC. The vague boundaries and divisions cause mass confusion when citizens try to report a stray animal. The situation worsens in an event involving a dangerous animal in which citizens are threatened. The boundaries and divisions of the city are confusing, said Harris County Director of Veterinary Public Health Dr. Michael White. I have to get a map out to double check it each time. As confusing as they may be, we currently do not have an agreement with any other animal control agencies. Pasadena has their own animal control, and the City of Houston has their own animal Continued on Page 2A Burkart blesses Pampas A farewell reception for the Rev. 2 Page 2 Section A, South Belt-Ellington Leader, Thursday, July 3, 2014 In My Opinion Weeke explains fireworks situation As has been my experience in dealing with the personnel at Mt. Olive Lutheran church, Pastor Ledbetter distracts and deceives your readers to make his case for hosting a fireworks stand on church property in direct conflict with a contract signed by church president Craig Allen, last summer. This has nothing to do with neither the barbeque cook-off nor the fireworks display hosted by the Southeast Volunteer Fire department. This has nothing to do either with Mr. Don Tran operating a business, however legal and above board it may be. This is about breaking the legal agreement they signed with Ayrshire management that was written expressly to keep them from selling fireworks. I have included a copy of this contract in this message to the Leader. Like Pastor Ledbetter I was raised with fireworks as a part of our 4th of July celebrations. But children get to play by childish rules. As an adult, and as the president of the Sageglen Community Association, I have a responsibility to follow the laws, play by the rules of adult behavior and be responsible to my community. Many members of the Sageglen Community have asked us to do something about this fireworks stand. This is precisely why the legal agreement was written by Ayrshire and signed by the church. This precisely why Ayrshire Corporation placed the church property under Sageglen s Association control. Pastor Ledbetter lied again when he states we are not located within a neighborhood association. I have included the legal document showing this statement is not true. In the same sentence the pastor writes we serve in all the neighborhood associations. In my many years of involvement with Sageglen I have never heard of any representative of Mt. Olive Church contact anyone in our association to offer any type of help or service. Finally, Pastor Ledbetter complains about the cost of legal advice. Here is my advice don t break the law and you won t have legal expenses. Thanks again to the Leader to give our community the venue to air our concerns and discuss our disagreements. Sam Weeke President, Sageglen Community Association Higginbotham answers on fireworks Regarding Pastor Ledbetter s position on selling fireworks: There is a reason why no other fireworks stands are permitted to sell their wares in our neighborhoods. That reason is that such stands are considered a public nuisance. The care for standards of safety in the SELL- ING of the fireworks is only one aspect of a larger issue. The second aspect is safety and public welfare AFTER the sale. If a fire is ignited by a wayward rocket, or a child is blinded by adult carelessness, or tired neighbors are kept awake a 1:00 a.m. by incessant booming what good are your onsite safety precautions then? In contrast, public fireworks displays are conducted by professionals, usually with firefighters in attendance, and during reasonable hours. The city of Houston banned the sale of fireworks within its boundaries for cause. Many other communities have done the same including South Belt. There was resistance, but finally full compliance except for Mount Olive. You write of legalisms and technicalities, but to my mind it comes to this: you are seeking to take advantage. Bruce Higginbotham Frenches seek return of stolen property I am a local South Belt resident off of Blackhawk and the beltway, in the neighborhood by Bracewell library. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 18, thieves stole our pick up truck with our attached landscape trailer full of all of our landscaping equipment. Usually we park the trailer in the garage but this night my husband had been so tired he failed to get it into the garage. We spoke with neighbors, one believes they heard the truck start up around 3 am. I walked outside Wednesday morning to leave for work, finding our business equipment gone. We immediately notified the police. We started our landscape business a few years ago after we were struggling to pay our bills and put food on our table. We quickly became close to all of our clients, acquired our equipment piece by piece, paying with our hard earned cash. Unfortunately we did not have the equipment on a scheduled insurance policy, so our homeowners insurance will only cover about a 1/8 of what was lost. I wanted to bring awareness to the neighborhood and the people who are longtime residents that we need to all the look out for each other, maybe someone has seen this truck that morning or knows of someone trying to sell landscaping equipment fast. Shown with Savala are new PISD board President Meriselle Quijano-Lerma (center) and the school district s attorney, Dexter Joyner. Shortly after Savala s son died, he created the Larry s Gift Foundation in his honor, in which Pasadena families in crisis receive pre-wrapped gifts and celebrate with food and games. But most importantly, the event gives Savala and his wife, Molly, an opportunity to reach out to families and show their support in their time of need. The event takes place annually in December. Larry and Molly Savala have been married for 35 years. Molly Savala is a public school teacher and also holds a certification in school counseling. Savala believes there is hope for the nation, cities, and families. As a new face on the board, Savala plans to bring about hope right here at home. I am ready to listen, Savala said. Parents have the unique position as the first teachers of their children and have a great responsibility to help them create their dreams for a wonderful future. More about Savala Animal control confusion... Continued from Page 1A control. In addition to the difficulties which a citizen must go through when reporting a stray animal, there appears to be a very unlikely chance that the animal will be captured and detained. These animals go around looking for food, said Rita Obey of the Harris County Media Relations Office. They won t stay in one place for long, unless it s their home. We could be there in 10 minutes after the call, but by then they ll be gone. The dispatched animal officer will look for the animal as best as he can, but he does have to move on to his next call if it seems like he will be unable to find it. Recent reports from residents in the block of Sagedowne regarding a stray and aggressive pit bull in close proximity of Thompson Intermediate School resulted in the Houston Police Department advising residents to remain inside their homes if they are afraid of dogs. No comment was given by BARC or HPD regarding their approach toward loose and aggressive pit bulls in a suburban neighborhood, so the Leader reached out to Pasadena Animal Control. I can t speak for BARC or Houston law enforcement, said Pasadena Animal Control Dispatcher Mary Lopez. For Pasadena Animal Control, when someone calls in to report a loose and aggressive animal, we ask for a description. These can be hard to go by, since many people don t know the type of dog that they are describing. Most of the time, the best we get is a color and a rough size. If someone were to report that the dog had bitten someone, then a trained animal officer will go out, set traps around the area, and look for the dog for 10 days, added Lopez. Furthermore, local animal control agencies are also severely understaffed. We don t have enough officers to respond to every dog call, said White when asked if Harris County Animal Control was understaffed. On a good day, we have about eight to 10 officers in the field. Right now we re down about three officers. We have 14 officers divided between the day and evening staff, explained White. When you take into account who has to work weekends and all that, we have about five to seven officers in the field during the day, and three to five during the evening shift. Animal control officer is just a job that not very many people want to do. Even with the low and depleted staff, White advises all loose dogs that are deemed to be aggressive or dangerous be reported to the respective animal control agency. Don t think that loose dogs are just a danger due to bites, added White. People are afraid to go out of their homes in fear of dogs. Obesity rates may increase for example due to people being too afraid to go outside. To report a loose dog in the city of Houston, call 311. To report a loose dog in unincorporated parts of Harris county, call To report a dog in the city of Pasadena, call Dangerous dogs According to Harris County Animal Control, dogs that meet the following criteria may be declared dangerous: A dog that makes an unprovoked attack on a person that occurred in a place other than an enclosure in which the dog was being kept, or a dog that commits an unprovoked attack in a place other than an enclosure in which the dog was being kept and that act would cause a person to reasonably believe that the dog will attack and cause bodily injury. Any person may report an incident which indicates a dog is dangerous as defined above. A hearing is held, and a judge determines if the dog is dangerous according to the definition. Requests for a dangerous dog declaration are filed at the local justice of the peace court by that individual. Process of declaring a dog dangerous Declaring a dog dangerous in Harris County is done by a duly elected justice of the peace. A person goes to their justice of the peace and fills out the paperwork to begin the process. The paperwork will ask for the person s information, description of the dog, the dog s owner (name and address) and a description of the incident that led the person to believe the dog is dangerous. Justice of the peace court then gives the owner a notice of the complaint. The owner has five days following the receipt of this notice to deliver the animal to Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services Veterinary Public Health where it will be held until the legal process is completed. The justice of the peace sets a hearing no later than 10 days following the delivery of the dog to HCPHES Veterinary Public Health. The owner and complainant are both notified. A hearing is held, in which a judge determines if the dog is dangerous in accordance to the definition. If the dog is declared to be dangerous, the owner then has 30 days to comply with the requirements for keeping a dangerous dog, which includes liability insurance and a secure enclosure inspected by Veterinary Public Health. If the dog is not declared to be dangerous, it is returned to its owner. Dobie s Trish Boudra ends PISD career as top teacher Continued from Page 1A ing the school year. Frank Dobie High School s Shining Stars, is shown with his teacher Jennifer Haynes. Ly and Haynes were honored at the annual Pasadena Independent School District Shining Stars Gala which recognizes the top students from each high school and their favorite teachers. Ly is the son of Thomasle Ly. He has volunteered at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital for a semester and a summer, and there were other volunteer opportunities offered by Dobie NHS and HOSA that he participated in. Extracurricular activities included Latin Club, HOSA, NHS, Math Club, and varsity tennis, and he has shown leadership skills as Math Club vice president, Latin Club captain and HOSA treasurer. Ly stated, Ms. Haynes has been a counselor, a friend and a partner to me throughout my high school career. I first met her while she was my older brother s counselor nearly three years ago, and, like my brother, I have had the pleasure of playing tennis with her in a student-teacher tournament. Whether on the job or on the courts, Ms. Haynes has always been caring, supportive and, most importantly, humorous. She will forever be a cool cat, Ly stated. Ly said, I hope to become a chemical engineer and/or become involved in scientific research. At this time, I am unsure of which college I will attend. The South Belt Shining Stars will be presented in a series of 10 students being honored along with their favorite mentor. This is the third in the series of 10. The 10 Shining Stars represent the Top 10 Dobie High School students. The information and photos were supplied by the Pasadena Independent School District. The Leader is also running the Top 10 Shining Stars from South Houston High School. (See Page 5A.) Six weeks later, the infant was released from the hospital and was placed with a family that was licensed to foster and adopt children. The 100 Club announced changes to its policies that would allow the families of the four Houston firefighters killed in the deadly May 31 motel blaze, including that of longtime South Belt resident Robert Bebee, to receive donations collected following the incident. The announcement came a week after media reports stated the organization s internal rules had initially prohibited it from giving raised funds to the affected families, as none of the first responders lost in the fire had either a spouse or children. The organization s new policy will give $20,000 checks to the executor of the estate of a law officer or a firefighter killed in the line of duty. For those with no dependents meaning no spouse or children the group will make an assessment of needs and pay off any outstanding debts. Many who donated in the wake of the motel fire felt deceived, as city officials and multiple media outlets, including the South Belt-Ellington Leader, encouraged people to donate specifically to the 100 Club. The organization even had a billboard campaign that used the images of the fallen firefighters to solicit funds. In all, an unprecedented $650,000 was donated after the fire. Dewey and Terry Clark will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary on July 6, The couple married July 6, They met after Terry moved to Houston and began attending Main Street Church of Christ in South Houston. For Dewey it was love at first sight, but Terry took a little more convincing. Several women at church tried their hands at matchmaking. Dewey used their activities in the singles ministry to get them together. After their first date, Terry was hooked. Terry graduated from Angelo State University with an Associate of Science degree in nursing. In May 1983, she moved to Houston to work in the CVICU at Methodist Hospital. In 2006, she received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Phoenix. She is now the nursing manager in that same unit. Dewey has lived in Houston all of his life. After being laid off from the oil industry, a career change was in order and he graduated from San Jacinto College as a respiratory therapist in He worked at Spring Branch Medical Center for 12 years then part time while raising their children. He finally decided to pursue his love of history by receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2009 and becoming a teacher. He currently works for Pasadena and Pearland ISDs as a substitute teacher. The Wolverines will head to La Porte Aug. 29 for the 2014 season opener, set to take on a La Porte team intent on getting back on track. Texas District 15 Sagemont-Beverly Hills all-stars done; Pearland teams, OFA on to sectionals Texas District 15 allstar baseball competition is complete, and once again the Pearland Little League has stolen most of the headlines. Pearland, with its ability to field to separate teams in most age group categories, won all but one of the age group crowns in TD 15 action. The lone holdout was in the junior (14-year-old) division, where Pearland did not field a team. Instead, OFA swept Sagemont-Beverly Hills 15-3, 15-1 in a two-team tournament, earning the chance to compete at sectionals after the July 4 holiday. Sagemont-Beverly Hills luck was not much better in the other divisions, although the 10-yearold SBHLL squad won two straight games in the bracket en route to a topthree finish. In the 10s bracket, Sagemont-Beverly Hills opened play with a nifty 6-2 victory over host East End to stay in the winner s bracket. Next came a 13-3 victory over OFA as SBHLL built momentum. However, Pearland West beat the locals 23-0 in the double-elimination event, and then came a 15-1 loss to Pearland East. In two other age group divisions, Sagemont-Beverly Hills played just two games before being eliminated. The SBHLL s 11-yearold team fell 16-0 to Pearland West in its first game and then lost 8-4 to South Houston. In the major division featuring 12-year-old age group play, SBHLL was on the short end of a 32-0 loss to Pearland East. Following that outcome, SBHLL was beaten, 6-0, by OFA. Sagemont-Beverly Hills senior division team (age 15) lost to Pearland Black, 21-5, in a firstround game. The locals came back to down Pearland Red by a 9-3 count but was then downed by East End. Sectional all-star play is now set to begin. For complete results of the Texas District 15 tournaments and other all-star play information, visit www. eteamz.com/td15. 8 Page 2, Section B, South Belt-Ellington Leader, Thursday, July 3, 2014 San Jac VB s Harrison nabs academic honor San Jacinto College sophomore volleyball student-athlete Keili Harrison earned the Superior Academic Achievement award from the National Junior College Athletic Association. Harrison, a 5-foot-9- inch setter from Columbus High School, maintained a 3.81 grade-point average in 2013 to earn the national recognition. Superior Academic Achievement is awarded to NJCAA student-athletes who maintain a 3.80 to 3.99 GPA on a 4.00 scale. I am very proud of Keili, said head coach Sharon Nelson, who will enter her 13th year at the helm of the San Jacinto College volleyball program this fall. It is not always easy to balance a competitive schedule and academic rigor, but Keili has done that. She exemplifies all of the positive attributes of a successful student-athlete and is deserving of this recognition. Harrison is headed to national powerhouse Baylor University next season. She averaged 6.74 assists per set in 2013 and was fourth on the squad in digs with 186 overall. She was a second-team All-conference selection. As a freshman, Harrison averaged 4.81 assists and 1.28 digs per set. During the academic year, the NJCAA saw 58,446 student-athletes compete on 3,705 teams in 28 different sports. Of those competitors, 3.08 percent or 1,799 student-athletes were recognized with academic awards for their achievements in the classroom. Receiving the highest honors with a 4.0 gradepoint average, 171 student-athletes received the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence. With minimal changes to its award program s inception in 1983, the NJ CAA has been annually recognizing the academic success of its student-athletes for 31 years. San Jacinto College finished the 2013 regular season ranked 13th in the country with a overall record. For more information about San Jacinto College volleyball, visit jac sports.com. 9 Thursday, July 3, 2014, South Belt-Ellington Leader, Section B, Page 3 McMurry U. football just may have steal in Dobie s Jackson By John Bechtle Sports Editor He burst onto the scene quickly during the 2011 season, using his speed and quickness to create havoc in opposing teams offensive backfields and making plays well down the field of play. It was easy to see why the Dobie sophomore defensive end, Marlon Jackson, was chosen unanimously as a first team alldistrict 22-5A performer during his first season at the varsity level. Jackson was simply that good. Yet a quick lesson in life shows that fortunes can change in a hurry. Perhaps no other player or coach associated with the Dobie football program knows this more than Jackson. A torn anterior cruciate ligament in a loss to Clear Falls ended Jackson s season in 2012, and blood pressure concerns stalled the start of Jackson s senior season. Still, Jackson persisted. Despite missing the start of the season, Jackson again excelled, earning a second appearance on the 22-5A first team unit, this time as an inside linebacker. Needless to say, when Jackson is on the field, he s one to watch. Opposing offenses had best know where No. 7 is. If not, a price will be paid. His Dobie career might be done, but Jackson is one of several Longhorn class of 2014 players who will get to show their wares at the collegiate level. Jackson told the Leader he has signed with McMurry University in Abilene, where he will play for the War Hawks under first-year head coach Lance Hinson and what is largely a brand new assistant coaching staff. Hinson and his staff will most certainly be looking to retool and upgrade a War Hawks defensive unit that surrendered more At left, Dobie linebacker Marlon Jackson (7) frequently used his speed and play-making ability to chase down opposing ball-carriers such as South Houston s Hector Flores (23). At the conclusion of the 2013 season, Jackson was a 22-5A first-team selection for the second time in his three-year career at Dobie. than 50 points per game en route to a 3-8 overall record. With McMurry moving to the NCAA Division III Lone Star Conference, Jackson sure seems to be the type of player the War Hawks are looking for as they head into unchartered territory beginning this fall the 2014 season. Forget about size, previous injury history or whatever, Jackson is simply a tackling machine. Always has been and always will be. Earlier this month, Jackson was part of the East squad in competition against the West at the North American All-Star Lone Star Bowl, held at Thorne Stadium in the Aldine ISD. Playing at linebacker, Jackson was one of his team s leading tacklers. The East roster also included Joseph Mobley and Nigel Sprauve of Clear Brook High School, and Dobie s Darobie Stenline played for the West team. Dobie varsity football Storm baseball excels, ready for national appearance head coach Jim Phillips admitted that he advised Jackson not to play in the all-star game for fear of injury setback. Still, he s not surprised Jackson excelled. Marlon is an outstanding football player, Phillips said. If he can just stay healthy, he is a very good football player. McMurry is getting themselves a good one. Jackson, too, is looking to stay healthy as he moves to the next level. He remembers his father, Marc Jackson, talking little more than football in his early years while growing up. That s all we talked about was football since I was little, Jackson said. Technique, the knowledge of the game, we talked about it all. Not even the best of the best, including South Houston receiver and University of Houston football signee Elton Dyer (12) could avoid the hard-charging A standout player at Beverly Hills Intermediate, Jackson advanced to Dobie High School and made enough of an impression to be elevated to the varsity team as a sophomore. Jackson, for his part, rewarded the Longhorn coaching staff for their decision to throw him into the fire that first season. It was a very exciting time to be on the varsity team, and I would have played anywhere on the field for the team. It was just a great experience to be out there playing with the varsity guys. When the torn ACL occurred in 2012, Jackson said he felt down on his luck. He briefly allowed his Continued on Page 6B Marlon Jackson (7) of Dobie. 12 Page 6, Section B, South Belt-Ellington Leader, Thursday, July 3, 2014 Player/coaching role fits McDonald right Continued from Page 1B Spikes Award. Before sitting out as a professional player in 2013, McDonald was a career.280 hitter with 96 career runs scored. As for her current stint with the USSSA Pride, McDonald got a call all the way from the top. At the owner s request, McDonald joined the squad to provide speed and experience at the top of the lineup. At this stage in her playing career, McDonald is smelling the roses, almost literally. The Pride roster is stacked with nationally renowned talent, from starting pitchers Cat Osterman and Keilani Ricketts to shortstop Natasha Whatley and outfielder Caitlin Lowe. It s been an amazing experience, McDonald said of playing with the Pride, a team with a 16-6 early season mark. Sharonda McDonald There s so much talent on this team. Sometimes I get caught watching and forget that I m supposed to be backing up a base from my (outfield) spot. Physically, McDonald has always been able to keep herself in playing shape. Yet as the years pass and travel constraints weigh in, she knows the end always comes. Hitting is like riding a bike, and thankfully I ve always been able to hit a little bit, she said. It wasn t that hard to get back into playing shape. I ve always tried to maintain my body. It s been fun. This (Pride) team is ridiculously good. On the coaching front, Krystal and Sharonda have both previously at the Division I level collegiately, and Iver these Continued from Page 3B grades to slip and wondered why it had to happen to him. Up stepped his mother, Pamela Hayes, his biggest supporter. Marlon Jackson She got me back to realizing that you have to believe in God and turn your trust over to him, Jackson said. My mother helped me realize I can do whatever I want to in life. Things turned around for me. I started believing in myself, valuing my relationships with teammates, other students, friends and my teachers. I knew I could get things going in a positive direction again. Even when his blood pressure concerns cropped up prior to the 2013 season, Jackson hung in there. He helped Dobie eventually reach the playoffs for a fourth straight season and earned that second time 22-5A first team honor. Jackson is due to report at McMurry University Aug. 13 for the start of preseason workouts. An outside linebacker, Jackson will be asked to days hosts local softball clinics and camps through her nonprofit organization. She s also a physical education instructor within the Pasadena Independent School District. Following the academic year at Texas A&M as a strength and conditioning staffer, McDonald spent 2009 at Texas Southern University. Next came three seasons at Ohio University, where she helped greatly improve the program s offensive production. McDonald s last two seasons have been spent at Louisiana State University as a graduate assistant. How did McDonald land at Texas Tech? She played the 2004 and 2005 seasons with Adrian Gregory, who this summer was named the women s softball head coach. Gregory, who is taking over a Tech program that went a season ago, hired McDonald to coach first base while working offensively with the team s slap hitters and defensively with the outfielders. I believe in the things Adrian is trying to do at Tech, and I am blessed that she has given me this opportunity, McDonald said. This is a great opportunity for me, and I m so ready to get started fulltime. Competing as both a player and a coach in a sport she has loved her life long, McDonald feels both grateful and blessed. McDonald is also thankful to her mother, Rhonda McDonald. This journey has been amazing, just so great and beyond anything I could have ever imagined, said McDonald, who added that 2014 is almost assured to be her final as a player. I owe a lot of it to our mother. She is just an amazing person who taught us that all is possible and to follow our dreams through to the end. She s been a terrific, loving mother to all of us for all of these years. In other words, Mc- Donald is livin the dream. Dobie FB s Jackson headed to McMurry use his speed to pressure opposing quarterbacks but will also be asked to drop into coverage. He s simply going to give it his all. In the classroom, Jackson is currently deciding between kinesiology and what would likely become a coaching career. Then again, law enforcement will be an option. Whether on the field or off, Jackson knows his mother will be no more than a phone call away. She has always kept my head looking forward and helped me through the injuries and the tough times. She s always been my No. 1 fan in football. Now I ve graduated high school, and I intend to graduate from college. I m just grateful to have this chance to play football at the college level. With the speed and quickness plus an innate ability to collect tackles in bunches, perhaps greater Division I opportunities would have come if not for the setbacks Jackson endured. But he s made it past those and is intent on showing the rest of the football world exactly what kind of player the War Hawks certainly need and will soon get. I just want to go to McMurry, work hard every day, show what I can do and take advantage of any chances that I get, Jackson said. I ve been playing football my whole life, and I want to see how my skills transfer to the next level. I m looking forward to it Beamer Serving the South Belt Area since 1979 Member South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce Open M-F 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., Sat. 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sun. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
