3 Jerry Johnson Testamentary Announcement! On behalf of the Trustees of the Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust, our most sincere congratulations go out to Tonda Campbell, the newest member of the RC of Killeen Heights, for becoming the 1,000 th recipient of a Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust match. This match, along with her contribution, also results in her becoming the newest Paul Harris Fellow in District Now in its 8 th year, the Jerry Testamentary Trust Match Program has distributed in excess of $203,000 to match the contributions made by 1,000 Rotarians in Districts 5730 and 5870, and to help them earn a total of 528 first time Paul Harris Fellowships. So far this Rotary year, the Johnson Trust has distributed $28,093 to help 76 Rotarians become Paul Harris Fellows. The trustees owe a great debt to PRIP Ron Burton without whose steadfast help in working through some Rotary Foundation red tape none of this would have been possible, and to our late friend Jerry Johnson whose vision to see what could be possible has left such a huge legacy.

Since 1960, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has advanced effective and ethical philanthropy for the world s largest network of professional fundraisers. AFP s more than 30,000 members raise more than $100 billion annually. From its first contribution of $26.50 almost a century ago, The Rotary Foundation s assets have grown to approximately $1 billion, and more than $3 billion have been spent on projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, support education, save mothers and children, and grow local economies. To mark the Foundation s centennial year, Rotary aims to raise $300 million by July We are honored to receive this recognition from the AFP, which give us even more reason to celebrate during our Foundation s centennial year, said Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Kalyan Banerjee. The continued strong support of Rotary members will help us keep our promise of a polio-free world for all children, and enable the Foundation to carry out its mission of advancing world understanding, goodwill and peace. We look forward to another 100 years of Rotary members taking action to make communities better around the world. The Rotary Foundation will receive its award at AFP s 2017 International Fundraising Conference in San Francisco, April 30 May 2, 2017.

10 Interview with Tamara Strait President of the Bee Cave-Spicewood Rotary Club Please tell us what factors helped you decide to join Rotary: I was not familiar with Rotary, maybe because women were not allowed membership when I entered the workforce. When I joined in 2014, I did so because I wanted to be more involved in the community, beyond my neighborhood. Of your Club s activities, what do you consider the one thing that best identifies what your Club is all about? I love our annual food drive! We help stock two local food pantries Spicewood Helping Hands and Lake Travis Crisis Ministries. I helped deliver the food items last year and loved seeing the impact our donations had on each pantry! What is your Club doing this year to attract new members? We are reaching out including people in our activities, talking about what we are doing and what fun we are having! Do you have any advice to offer others in the District about how best to achieve a successful fund-raiser? We are working on this aspect for the club; we are reaching out to other clubs for guidance. Do you have any innovative plans for Rotary-related publicity during your Presidency? Maintaining the momentum the Past President, Mike Bates, put in place. He did a great job moving the club forward. As President, what s your biggest concern for the coming year? Bringing on Unicorns, as the young Rotarians were referred to at PETS, and then seeking their help! What s the best book you ve read in the past 3 years? Where the River Runs, by Charles Martin What s your favorite quotation? Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead What s your favorite restaurant in your community? There are many! I do enjoy what Chisos Grill did with their new site! What one thing would you most recommend as a must see, a hidden treasure, for visitors to your community?. I love our Library all that they offer, the staff, and what they give to the community. To me, they represent the center of the community!

The district was represented by members of Rotary Club of Killeen Heights, Harker Heights Rotary, Belton Rotary Club, Temple-South and Rotary Club of Georgetown, Texas. 23 What is Rotary Has Heart? Rotary Has Heart is the over-arching theme each Rotary club can use to promote the work being done in your community. By using a common theme, and common social media, clubs are able to share their good work with others. Together, we can all help our friends and neighbors see the great work being done each day by thousands of Rotarians! When/How To Use Rotary Has Heart? You can use an existing program, or develop a new service project to highlight how your club is showing heart in your community. This is your chance to help build better publicity across the entire Rotary world by working together to promote the good work we all do each and every day. We need to talk about what Rotary does, and make sure we use a unified voice in telling our story. Please use the downloadable jpg images, Rotary- Heart news release (adapt it for use in your club and use the hash tag #RotaryHasHeart on social media. Then, send your news stories, photos, and reports of media placement to the PR Chair so we can tally the results.

26 RI to Recognize Austin Rotary Global Grant for Centennial The Rotary Foundation has just announced they have selected one of our Global Grants (GG between the Rotary Clubs of Austin and San Nicolás de los Garza in D-4130 to help a mobile medical unit for rural medical care) for recognition as part of the Foundation s centennial celebration. During the coming months, The Rotary Foundation will be sharing this exciting news throughout the Rotary world and highlighting this project along with the others that were selected. Congratulations to John Braun, Ellen Hunt and Mavi Chapa for championing this grant, and to Ken Adams and Brenda Osbon for creating the conditions that made it successful.

27 Rotary Named World's Outstanding Foundation 2016 The Rotary Foundation, the charitable arm of Rotary a global network of volunteers committed to improving lives and communities around the world has been named the 2016 Outstanding Foundation by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). From its first contribution of $26.50 almost a century ago, The Rotary Foundation s assets have grown to approximately $1 billion, and more than $3 billion have been spent on projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, support education, save mothers and children, and grow local economies. The Rotary Foundation s top priority is the global eradication of polio. Rotary launched its Polio- Plus program in 1985, and in 1988 became a leading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Since then, Rotary has contributed more than $1.6 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than two billion children in 122 countries from this paralysing disease. The Foundation s advocacy efforts also have resulted in another $9 billion from world governments and foundations, increasing its impact. Today, polio is on the verge of becoming only the second human disease ever to be eliminated after smallpox, with a 99.9 percent decrease in cases since the initiative began. To mark the Foundation s centennial year, Rotary members aim to raise $300 million by July We are honoured to receive this recognition from the AFP, which give us even more reason to celebrate during our Foundation s centennial year, said Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Kalyan Banerjee. The continued strong support of Rotary members will help us keep our promise of a polio-free world for all children, and enable the Foundation to carry out its mission of advancing world understanding, goodwill and peace. We look forward to another 100 years of Rotary members taking action to make communities better around the world. Rotary clubs have long embraced the call for peace at the grassroots level by addressing the underlying causes of conflict and violence, such as hunger, poverty, disease and illiteracy. In 2002, the Rotary Foundation took a direct approach by providing future leaders the tools to become catalysts for peace in their communities. Each year, up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellows are chosen to participate in a master s degree or certificate program at one of Rotary s Peace Centers in partnership with universities around the world. Today, more than 1,000 peace fellow alumni serve as leaders in national governments, nongovernmental organizations, the military, law enforcement, and international institutions such as the United Nations and World Bank. While almost everyone is familiar with Rotary, not everyone may realize just how much an impact Rotary and the Rotary Foundation have had on countless people and communities across the globe, said AFP President and CEO Jason Lee. On behalf of the entire charitable sector and people around the world, all of us at AFP are honored to be able to recognize The Rotary Foundation as our 2016 Outstanding Foundation.
