Study abroad
I went to Spain
To Galicia
But first I went to Barcelona
Funding for language course Lånekassen (Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund) covers the costs of a language course if you have received a place in a non-english university
Then I went to To Universidade de Santiago de Compostela Campus of Lugo
How I ended up there?
Subjects Subjects in the study programme Geomatics and Topography Engineering Cadastre First term Agrarian Economics and Policy Land Tenure and Land Management Second term Rural planning CAD and Parametric Design Law and Land Spanish for foreigners They also have more technical subjects in surveying etc.
Challenges Lectures in Galician and/or Spanish Culture shock Paper mill, although much easier because of the Erasmus programme Exams in Spanish
Positives I learned a new language! I made friends from all over the world I made contacts I understood the Norwegian land administration system much better after seeing how a different system worked I got tougher Scholarship from the Erasmus programme

Thesis
I went to Ecuador
To the province of Loja
The province of Loja Loja is the name of a province, but also a municipality, a parish and a city
How I ended up there? I had made contacts with two PhD students while I was in Spain One originally from Guayaquil and one originally from Loja My friend Lupe García from Guayaquil met me at the airport, took care of me for the five first days and put me on the correct bus up to Loja (2200 meters above sea level) My friend Fabián Reyes met me at the bus station in Loja city and helped me with accommodation and a desk at the National University of Loja
Before you go - research questions

Before you go plan well Then plan some more Have the research questions ready Have the interview questions ready Maybe I should say prepare well instead, because nothing will go as you planned Prepare mentally go through scenarios with your supervisor Plan to take decisions when you get there Plans are nothing, planning is everything Make sure you have contacts to help you when you arrive
Field Work I had 7 weeks in Loja. In quite a few of them I was ill It was necessary to have a base station I decided on Loja city duo to Mr. Fabián Reyes Most public authorities had offices there It was the best starting point for getting around
Interviews How to do this in the right way? I was a young, blond, white woman with a strange Spanish accent who didn t know the acceptable local behavior I would have got nowhere without the help of an insider I quickly realized had to change my interview questions after the terms on the scene The plan was to start with the university, then public authorities at national, regional and local level, then farmers Because of language problems, the number of informants reduced itself. I knew Spanish, but not the dialects and terms
Interviews After conversation with different informants and with Fabián, three areas came out clear. Municipality of Chaguarpamba, Municipality of Loja, and Municipalities Espíndola I planned to talk to local authorities as well as farmers in two or three villages within each area. This did not go as planned duo to land slides in Espindola and Chaguarpamba.
Interviews Interviews in public offices Rule number one: Don t just pop up in somebody's office and ask for an interview. There s a hierarchy out there that we Norwegians know little about 1. Fabián calls and make an appointment 2. Fabián goes with me to the first meeting 3. I give the interview object an oficio a letter (written by Fabián) explaining who I was and why I was there, and expressed the desire of knowledge, and if it would be possible to ask him or her some questions.
Interviews 4. Fabián introduces me how he knew me and what information I was looking for, expressing the believe that this office would help me getting that information. 5. If this resulted in a positive answer, as it normally did, a new appointment would be agreed to. 6. To the next meeting I could go on my own without the need of assistance of Mr. Reyes. After first being introduced to the head of section, it often happened that afterwards the whole office would do what they could to help me. It also happened that I got kicked out of offices
Research areas Rural Poor Elderly people Migration/ vacated houses Roads, but the state varies Electricity coming and going Primary schools, and some villages also had secondary schools
Interviews Interviews with farmers I had prepared a list of questions before going out in the field. They meant to provide a good starting point The farmers were not prepared for the questions as they had not been notified that I was coming. This was impossible as some villages did not have stable electricity or telephone connection. I wanted to talk to farmers owning land, or wives, sons or daughters of farmers owning land.
Challenges while interviewing farmers Language problems, not just the Spanish, but the local words
Challenges while interviewing farmers Skepticism Are you a spy? Rent a horse!
Challenges while interviewing farmers Be curios What are those channels criscrossing the landscape? Outside the box
Riego a public water channel of concrete
Acequia a private water channel
Summer jobs
In Norway International services of Kartverket? Centre for Human Rights, University of Oslo?
Internship
What is an internship? An "internship" is an opportunity offered by an employer to potential employees, called "interns", to work at a firm for a fixed, limited period of time.
Internships in UN The purpose of the United Nations internship programme is twofold: (a) to provide a framework by which students from diverse academic backgrounds gain exposure to the United Nations through assignment to offices within the Secretariat in order to enhance their educational experience and gain experience in the work of the United Nations; and (b) to provide United Nations offices with the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields. Period of stay varies from office to office. At UNON (United Nations office at Nairobi) it is from 2-6 months.
I went to Kenya
To UNON UNON = United Nations Office at Nairobi I worked at the global office of UN-Habitat In the Shelter Branch In the Land, Tenure and Property Administration Section
How did I end up there? UNON gets applications each year.. How do you get singled out? Contacts
Tasks I supported the work of the GLTN (Global Land Tool Network) GLTN is an international network administered by LTPAS, which aims to establish a continuum of land rights and the development of innovative, pro poor, scalable and gendered land management and land tenure tools I documented, evaluated and created an inventory of bestpractices on pro poor land tool development in Latin America and in Asia I also helped with the administration of an international workshop Gendering Land tools
Challenges English Culture shock though I had experience in how to handle that Safety Hierarchy UN norms
Positives I took Spanish lessons (for free) I could also take Swahili lessons I volunteered in YEP! Nairobi (Youth Empowerment Programme). An NGO made by the interns and supporting a school in Mathare slum I made more friends And more contacts I got a really nice resume and a better CV I got two days of a month = possibilities of travelling. I went to Uganda, Zanzibar, Mombasa (city on the coast of Kenya), Kisumo (city by Lake Victoria), Lamu (Kenyan island) and on a safari to Masai Mara
