16 Paper2: (Section A) The French Revolution Example Answers Part (a), 3 marks What can you learn from Source A about Prohibition? Candidate A We can see from some men in the painting. One of them has a bottled tied behind his back. Another is carrying a still which contains alcohol. Candidate B Source A suggests that Prohibition did not work. It suggests that people used many ingenious methods to get alcohol and some people would go to any lengths to get alcohol. Candidate C Source A suggests that Prohibition did not work because there are a great number of people making alcohol. And there were many ingenious methods to get alcohol with some people concealing it behind their backs. It also suggests that some people would go to lengths to get alcohol. 16

20 Paper2: (Section A) The French Revolution Example answer Part (b), 7 marks Source C supports the evidence of Source B about the attitude of the police to speakeasies. Source C suggests that the police were bribed when it says he was handed an envelope which was a payoff. He opened the envelope and there was $75 in it. Source B supports this when it says the owners of the speakeasies would bribe the captain of the police with a $50 bill every so often. Both suggest that the police were given money to turn a blind eye to speakeasies. 20

24 Paper2: (Section A) The French Revolution Example P.E.E.L paragraph Part (c), 15 marks The bad harvests of 1788 was quite an important cause of the French Revolution. This was because of the inequalities of the Ancien Regime. The Ancien Regime meant that France was divided up into 3 estates. The 1st estate was the clergy and they had privileges such as no taxes, no military service and had the right to be tried in a church court. The 2nd estate was the nobility and they had privileges such as no taxes, could wear a sword in public and had legal rights (could be beheaded rather than hanged). The 3rd estate was everyone else and they had no privileges. Source A shows us just this during the bad harvest. The 1st and 2nd estates are bearing down on an exhausted looking 3rd estate that is lying down. The source shows us that the 1st and 2nd estates thought they were more superior to the 3rd estate, so when the bad harvest struck, they continued to eat in the same way, which made it harder for the 3rd estate. This made the 3rd estate angry and could have led to the revolution. Therefore the bad harvests of 1788 was an important cause of the French Revolution. 24

Deng saw that China needed to increase production and modernise industry to support its huge population which was close to one billion (1000 million). In 1979 a new and ambitious Ten Year Plan was introduced. Many new factories were built and workers were paid bonuses for extra output. People were free to own their own businesses. To satisfy demand, record numbers of consumer goods, such as bicycles, watches and sewing machines, were produced. Foreigners were encouraged to visit China and invest their money, even from the old enemy, the USA. In the countryside the size of peasant plots was increased. A Responsibility System for commune land was started in 1978, by which families were given responsibility for cultivating areas of land within their commune. They signed contracts promising to produce fixed amount of food for sale to the state, and were allowed to sell any surplus at market for a profit. 37
