2 County Council Meetings The 4 H Youth County Council meetings are open to 4 H members age 9 and older. Meetings provide opportunities for youth to meet, share ideas, plan, and implement activities with other youth throughout the county. Each club is encouraged to send 2 3 representatives to each meeting. Club representatives typically include the President and 1 2 Council Delegates. The next County Council Meeting is on February 22, at 7:00 p.m. at the Extension office at 200 Taylor Street, Ste. 500, Fort Worth, TX Co. Council Scheduled Meetings August October Feb April May Adult Leader Meetings The next Adult Leader meeting will be on January 25, 2010 at 7:00 pm at the Extension office at 200 Taylor Street, Ste. 500, Fort Worth, TX Each club is invited to send representatives to participate in these meetings. Anyone who is planning to pick up supplies or copies at an ALA meet ing, should their request to Nanci & Cindy at least 2 days prior to the meeting Adult Ldr. Scheduled Meetings September November January March May Fort Worth Stock Show Parade The Fort Worth Stock Show Parade is the traditional kick off to the Fort Worth Stock Show. This year s event will be Saturday, January 16, in downtown Fort Worth. All 4 H Youth and adults are invited to join in the parade. We will meet in the Plaza Building (Extension office) lobby at 9:45 a.m. If you are interested, please complete and return the Release form (located on the 4 H website) to the Tarrant County 4 H office. Fax form to or scan and e mail to the 4 H office. Western Heritage Event Following the parade on January 16, be sure to walk over to the Western Heritage event which will be located on the 1st floor of the parking garage at the corner of Belknap, Weatherford, and Taylor. There will be numerous educational booths with fun activities to experience, focusing on Fort Worth s heritage. Stop by the 4 H booth to say Howdy to our Tarrant County 4 H Ambassadors and learn about cotton, spinning, needle works, and more. Page 2

3 Clothing & Textiles Project The Clothing & Textiles project is one which encompasses a wide variety of interests and skills. As a basic necessity of life, it is important that youth learn how to select and care for their clothes properly. While some youth focus on wise consumerism, others choose to develop skills in clothing construction and/or design. Youth may work in project groups or individually, depending on their preferences and schedules. Each spring, several opportunities are provided for youth to demonstrate their skills and interests. To learn more, plan to attend the County Fashion Show Clothing Project & Fashion Show Training on January 26, at 6:30 p.m., at the Extension office. There is no fee to attend the event, but pre registration is required. Please RSVP to Nanci at by January 12. The 4 H Fashion Show is a competition in which youth may participate to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have gained in their Clothing & Textile project. Youth may participate in one Fashion Show category and one Design category. Fashion Show Categories Construction: (Casual, Dressy, Specialty, Formal) Buying: (Casual, Dressy, Specialty, Formal) Design Categories Fashion Design Apparel Design Fabric/Textile Design The County Fashion Show will be conducted at the Extension Office on March 9, at 6:30 p.m. Entry forms will be available on the 4 H website, under Current Events. Entry forms are due in the Extension office by February H Has Talent pate in this activity. Teams may be one age category or a combination of both intermediates & seniors. An individual and/or team (max 4 members) may only submit one video. Ten finalists will be selected from their peers using an online voting system as well as an expert panel of judges. Those ten finalists will then have the opportunity to Do you have what it takes to be a star? If so, the 2010 Texas 4 H Roundup has a Talent Competition for you. How to get involved: Submit a video file no longer than 5 min. of your best talent. Submissions must be 4 H age appropriate. Intermediate & Senior aged 4 H members are allowed to participerform on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Roundup. After all finalists finish performing, the audience will vote via text messaging to select the winner. 6 The 2010County Photography Show is February 8, Please have your photos and eligibility forms turned in to the 4 H office by that date. The Rules and Guidelines are as follows: 1.Eligibility of Photos: All photographs must have been taken by 4 H members between the dates of January 1, 2009 and the time of entry. Photos may be submitted only one time and in only one division and class. 2.Number of Entries: You may have only one entry per class 3.Entry deadline: Entries must be submitted by February 8, 2010 to the Tarrant County 4 H office. 4. Size of Photograph: Each photograph must be a true 8 inch by 10 inch photograph. 5. Mounting of Photographs: All prints must be securely and permanently mounted on solid PHOTO GRAPHIC MOUNT BOARD (Mat Board Material) or a THIN FOAM BOARD no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches suitable for hanging without an additional frame. Masonite, photo folders, corrugated cardboard or thin poster board is not acceptable. Double faced tape, glue or rubber cement is not allowed for mounting purposes. (Use dry mounting if possible.) Matting (of any kind) is not allowed and will result in disqualification. Some resources for mounting supplies include: Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Blick Studio ( local framing shops, and art supply stores. 6.Negatives: Entrants must be able to provide original transparencies, negative, disk or print if requested. County Photography Contest 7.Refusal Rights: The Tarrant County 4 H office reserves the right to refuse inappropriate or unsuitable entries. 8. Judges: Judges will determine the placings. Their decision on all entries is final. 9.JudgingCriteria: In general, contest judges establish a viewing distance when evaluating photo quality, 8 x 10 photos are generally viewed from 14 to 16 inches. Participants should use viewing distance and the following criteria as guidelines: Focus Exposure Lighting Print Quality Subject Composition Impact Uniqueness Awards Blue, Red, and White quality awards will be given to entries based on the score sheet criteria. Proper Labeling of Photos: Each entry must include the completed label affixed to the back of the photo in the center. The information MUST be legibly printed or typed on the photo release. This form can be found online in a PDF format on the Tarrant County 4 H website under Current Events. Divisions are: People Animals Still Life Landscape Plant/Flora Architectural Elements Special Effects/Creative Effects Theme The Four Seasons of Texas Classes are: Color Black & White All Media Please go to the 4 H website for more in depth information. 7 4-H Opportunity Scholarship The H Opportunity Scholarship program is offered to graduating senior 4 H members and alumni who are current college students. Types of scholarships include: Baccalaureate Scholarships for students who plan to pursue a BS or BA degree Technical Certification Scholarships for those who plan to pursue technical certification Collegiate Scholarships former 4 H members who have completed one year of college with 30 hours Courageous Heart Scholarships for those who have overcome extreme obstacles related to medical, family, and/or education while remaining active in 4 H & School The value of scholarships range from $500 to $16,000. Finalists are required to attend a face toface interview and scholarship assembly. For your convenience, the application, guidelines, & a sample can be accessed on the Tarrant County 4 H website, under 4 H Scholarships as well as the State 4 H website. The application is due in the County Extension office by January 21. Please contact Cindy Bryant at for questions or to schedule an appointment. Tarrant County Junior Livestock Show Scholarship Each year the Tarrant Junior Livestock Association awards scholarships to deserving youth. Each applicant must be an active 4 H or FFA member and be a graduating senior in Applicants must have participated in the Tarrant County Junior Livestock Show and/or the Tarrant County FFA & 4 H Youth Fair in at least one division during the past 2 years and be entered in at least one division of the 2010 Tarrant County Jr. Livestock Show or Tarrant County FFA & 4 H Youth Fair. 4 H members must have turned in a 4 H record book the previous year. CEA must attest. For all questions regarding the scholarship or for an application contact Paul Burrough at Applications must be postmarked no later than January 11, All applications are to be mailed to Tarrant Ag Scholarship Corporation, P. O. Box Fort Worth, Tx A minimum GPA of 2.5 and a copy of applicant s high school transcript are required. Applicant must have taken the SAT or ACT before January 1, 2010 and attach a copy of scores to scholarship application. Applicant must submit two letters of recommendation with scholarship application. One academic reference and one personal reference. Scholarship awards will range from $1000 to $2000 per award, with no more than $15,000 total for all awards in Scholarship interviews will take place on Wednesday February 10, 2010 at location to be announced. Scholarship recipients must be present at the awards ceremony held prior to the 2010 TCJLS Premium Sale. They must also attend the Tarrant Ag Scholarship Corporation Gala event scheduled on April 29, God s promises are like the stars; the darker the night the brighter they shine. David Nicholas Page 7

8 4-H Dog Day Come learn what 4 H offers for you and your dog on March 20, 2010 from 10:00 am 4:00 pm. Paws a Plenty 4 H Dog Club will host a 4 H Dog Day Event. The highlights of this event will be: Demonstrations on: Obedience Rally Agility Fly ball Conformation Showmanship Drill Team Plus: Dog Safety Responsible Dog Ownership Basic Care Canine Good Citizen Exam Demonstrations will be provided by students of Gold Medal Dog Training Center. Dog Project Certification Current 4 H members must preregister. Submit 4 Her s name, club name & county by February 1, 2010 to Gail Petell at gapetell@sbcglobal.net Only Dogs entered in the Demo and those signed up for the CGC exam will be permitted. Loretta Girzartis Dog Quiz Bowl All 4 H Dog Project members need to complete a Dog Certification form and return it to the county office no later than January 10, There is no fee for the certification form so it is highly recommended that members certify all dogs with which they work and may possibly show. Please complete a separate form for each dog. For your convenience, the form is located on the Tarrant County 4 H website as well as the State 4 H website. The State 4 H Dog Show will be July 9 11, 2010 in Belton County Expo Center. It provides opportunities for youth to compete in a wide variety of areas, such as: Conformation, Obedience, Showmanship, Rally, Agility, Drill & Costume. The Rules and Guidelines can be located online, along with the certification form.
