Dr. Frank Pinkerton has retired and Dr. Paul Martino takes over the reins of Organic Chemistry. Dr. Martino received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Virginia (dissertation = Structural Studies of Protein, Applications of Tandem Mass Spectrometry). As a member of the Chemistry Department at Flathead Valley Community College in Montana, Paul not only taught a number of chemistry courses, he was also very active in research especially in the area of mass spectrometry based processes to examine molecular interactions. Paul s impressive credentials include teaching experience at Flathead Valley CC and the University of Wisconsin, and research at the Beckman Research Institute. Paul has also received numerous grants and has an impressive list of publications and presentations. His recent NSF grant focused on NMR spectroscopy as a tool for infusing experimental investigation into college chemistry classes. CN has a rich history of outstanding organic chemistry professors with Drs. Carl Tabb Bahner and Frank Pinkerton leading the way for the last three quarters of a century. We are blessed to have someone of Paul Martino s caliber to continue this tradition. Please try to join us at homecoming this fall (Saturday, October 22 nd ), to meet Paul. Please contact Dr. Christine Dalton (cdalton@cn.edu) for more information about homecoming. Wright Receives Continued Funding Dr. Steve Wright continues to lead the way in research at CN. Dr. Wright, working in collaboration with faculty at two other institutions, has received notification of continued NSF support for a research project studying cell signaling in yeast. This award, totaling $146,222 brings the overall award to $290,121. This research is designed to fill a large gap in the understanding of the relationship between nutrient sensing and mating in yeast while significantly impacting undergraduate students, faculty and science departments at three primarily undergraduate institutions. Undergraduate students will be exposed to current biochemical research during an intensive ten week summer project with the opportunity to continue the research during the 1

2 academic year. Undergraduate students will be involved in the design, implementation, interpretation, and dissemination of the results of their own experiments in a community of peers. This project represents an opportunity to improve the skills of the faculty involved who regularly translate research into their teaching labs. A number of health pre-professions students are taking advantage of this opportunity. Mission Trip to Haiti Earlier this summer HPAC committee members Patsy Boyce and Sue McBee helped lead a week-long medical mission trip to Haiti/Dominican Republic. The team included current pre-med student, Justin Humphrey. Their trip included seeing numerous patients in five villages. This represents the third consecutive year Patsy Boyce and Sue McBee have been on a medical mission trip to Haiti. We applaud their efforts in reaching out to some of the world s most underprivileged people in Christ like fashion. Wilkerson Receives Advising Award Biology prof Matt Wilkerson received the advising award at CN s faculty and staff honors banquet this spring. Based primarily on the evaluations of advisees, the honor recognizes those who go beyond expectations to serve their students. Matt is a C-N alumnus (1999) who also holds a degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, and has been teaching at CN for the past 5 years. Provost Dr. Kina Mallard congratulated Matt for his efforts in seeking out additional growth opportunities for students. He recently nominated Lauren Hodge, a rising sophomore who won a $6000 NSF Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Scholarship, which is administered by the Appalachian College Association. Though not a member of the HPAC at CN, Matt spends a great deal of time writing committee letters of recommendation for our health pre-professions students. 2

3 Van Lunen Cadaver Lab Dedicated to Dr. Pinkerton During the Fall 2010 homecoming events, Dr. Frank Pinkerton was recognized for his outstanding leadership of the Health Professions Advisory Committee of Carson-Newman. During the grand opening of the newly renovated cadaver lab, Dr. Pinkerton was presented a plaque by Dr. Patsy Boyce. The plaque is on display outside the cadaver lab. During his time at CN, Frank made many significant contributions to the Health Professions program, including helping to draft to proposal to the Van Lunen Foundation for the funds to renovate the lab Dr. James Chapman Scholarship Recipient Jack Malone, a senior premedical student from Bristol, TN, is the recipient of the Dr. James Chapman Scholarship for Jack is a biochemistry major with an interest in orthopedic surgery. Jack is a member of Tri-Beta, the KEM Club, and Mortar Board. Jack has shadowed Dr. Curt Barnes at Appalachian Orthopedics Mathews Dental Scholarship Recipient Chad Adams, a senior predental student from Knoxville, TN, has been selected to receive the Dr. and Mrs. Chris Mathews Dental Scholarship for the next year. As a biology major Chad is an excellent academic student. Chad is a member of Tri-Beta, the KEM Club, and Mortar Board. Chad s main shadowing experience was with Dr. Mullins. 3

4 Dr. and Mrs. James H. Harris Scholarship Recipient Joshua Earl, a senior premedical student from Hendersonville, TN, has been selected to receive the Dr. and Mrs. James H. Harris Scholarship for next year. Joshua is a biology major with a minor in philosophy. He is very active sports, having played soccer at CN. He has already had considerable experience with Drs. Greg Myers, John McGraw, and Jeffery Greene Stuart Paul Hinchey Scholarship Recipient Kylie Elliott, a senior premedical student from Maryville, TN, has been selected to receive the Stuart Paul Hinchey Scholarship for next year. Kylie is a biology major with a psychology minor, and a member of CN s tennis team. Kylie has shadowed with Drs. Mark Colquitt, Mark Kent, and Robert Belt, and hopes to specialize in pediatrics. IN THE NEWS Van Lunen Cadaver Lab: In December of 2009, the Van Lunen Foundation donated $250,000 to our School of Natural Science and Mathematics for renovation of the cadaver facility. During the fall 2010 homecoming celebrations, the lab was dedicated to Dr. Frank Pinkerton. If you weren t able to attend homecoming last year, please try to stop by this year (October 22 nd ). Pinkerton and Herring Retire: Drs. Frank Pinkerton and Carey Herring retired this year after many years of outstanding service to Carson-Newman. We are grateful for all they did. (Rumor has it that while Carey plans to make a statistically significant increase in his fishing, Frank plans on doing what Big Momma says to do.) New Physics Prof Hired: Joining HPAC member Dr. Mike Seale in Physics this fall is Dr. Paul Hosmer. Paul received his Ph.D. in physics from Michigan State University in 2005, and spent a number of years teaching nuclear physics to naval personnel. Welcome Paul! Joani Barnes Jack: Joani received the TNAAP Pediatrician of the Year award. HP-P Students Participate in Summer Programs: Justin Humphrey and Jennifer Bowan participated in Jackson-Madison County General Hospital summer externship program. Health Professions Night: Thanks to HP alums for the HP night panel in April for our undergraduate HP students. Panelists included MD, Donnie Parker; Dentist, Dave Parker; PT, Matt Barnes; Pharmacists, Megan McBee Schrock and Michael Trent. 4
