1 RECENT ALUMNI ACTIVITY Wayne State magazine was mailed to approximately 18,000 alumni and Anthony Wayne Society members in December. The issue featured the A. Paul Schaap Chemistry Building and Lecture Hall and the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights as well as an in-depth feature on TechTown. Two electronic State and the School of Medicine Alumni Connection, were sent monthly to 66,000 and 5,000 alumni, respectively. Alumni also have been given the opportunity to subscribe to the university s daily e-newsletter. The Wayne State University Alumni Association Past Presidents Council met on December 13 for its annual holiday luncheon at the Detroit Golf Club. In addition to the reunion of former leaders, the council indicated support for the transition from dues-based to free alumni memberships. The national alumni association hosted a championship football game viewing party at Emagine Theater and Sky Lanes Bowling in Royal Oak on December 17. The morning began with a reception in the theater atrium. The championship game was broadcast live in two of the theaters as well as on screens throughout Sky Lanes Bowling and bar. Approximately 350 alumni and friends attended. The 13th Annual Alumni Student Career Evening, hosted by the School of Medicine Alumni Association, was held on January 11. The annual Legislative Brunch, sponsored by the national alumni association and the Office of Government and Community Affairs, was held on January 14 at the A. Paul Schaap Chemistry Building. Legislators, alumni and university administrators enjoyed a buffet brunch and heard presentations on university research, including TechTown and the Perinatal Research Branch, in addition to remarks by Dr. Schaap on the importance of technology transfer to the Michigan economy. The School of Medicine Alumni Association held receptions for alumni and friends at Andiamo Dearborn on January 24 and Andiamo Bloomfield on January 25. The first gathering of the Fox Run Friends of Wayne State University was a tea on February 1 for alumni, university retirees and donors who reside in the Fox Run retirement living community in Novi, Michigan. The purpose of the group is to

2 2 promote acquaintance and fellowship among Fox Run residents with university ties, and to increase support for the university in the Fox Run community. The group plans a bus tour of campus in spring Regional Alumni Engagement Activities A pre-game reception was held for alumni at the Winston-Salem Marriot, North Carolina on December 10 to celebrate the Warriors football team in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division 2 national championship against Winston- Salem State University. A breakfast tailgate was held at Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence, Alabama, on December 17 for students, alumni, parents, fans and university officials to cheer on the football team in the national championship game against Pittsburg State. UPCOMING ALUMNI EVENTS Regional events will be held in Atlanta, February 8; Florida, February 18 and 19 and March 4 and 17; Toledo and Cleveland, February 22 and 23; Scottsdale, April 21; Chicago, April 25; New York, May 24; Seattle, June 9; San Francisco, June 11; Denver, September 20; Washington, D.C., October 15; Dallas, October 22 26; San Diego, November 6; and Los Angeles, November 8. During the spring and fall seasons, executive breakfasts will be held in Oakland County and receptions in Wayne County. The Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Lecture Series will continue with lectures in February and April. The Alumni Relations Office has developed Snowbird Seminars, a series of four events for alumni and friends this winter in Florida. Sunday brunches with President Allan Gilmour are planned for Bonita Springs (February 19) and Sarasota (March 4). The annual Detroit Tigers spring training game and family picnic will be held at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland on March 17. A new addition to this year s schedule is an Alumni College event in Fort Lauderdale on February 18, featuring lunch and presentations by President Allan Gilmour; Vice Dean Maryjean Schenk of the School of Medicine; Dr. Mildred Singleton- Anderson (SOM 75); Drs. Patricia (SOM 67) and Bob Gussin; and Charles PT Phoenix (Business 75; Law 99). Two of the presentations have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 continuing education credit for physicians.

3 3 On March 30, an alumni reception will be held at Joe Louis Arena prior to the Red Wings game. MAJOR GIFTS Hanley N. Abramson, Ph.D., contributed $25,000 toward his pledge of $72,000 to the Hanley N. and Young Hee Abramson Endowed Scholarship in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Aurora CAD Training and Development gave a gift-in-kind valued at $85,000 to the College of Engineering. Mandell L. Berman donated $30,000 to the Mandell and Madelaine Berman Scholarship for At-Risk Students. Beverly G. Butler contributed $25,000 to establish the Rebecca Joy Butler Endowed Scholarship in the School of Business Administration. Children s Hospital of Michigan Foundation gave $40,000 for Raman Spectroscopy in the Department of Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine. The Edsel B. Ford II Fund donated $40,000 to the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights in the Law School. Henry Ford Health System gave $25,000 to the Robert R. Frank, M.D. Endowed Scholarship at the School of Medicine. The Henry Ford II Fund contributed $160,000 to the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights in the Law School. The Foundation for Ophthalmic Research and Development gave $25,000 to establish the Tamer H. Mahmoud, M.D. Endowed Fellow Research Award in Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine. The General Motors Foundation donated $40,000 to the College of Engineering and $25,000 to the Damon J. Keith Law Collection in the Law School. The James and Lynelle Holden Fund gave $25,000 to the Richard J. Mazurek, M.D., Medical Education Commons in the School of Medicine.

4 4 Karyopharm Therapeutics contributed $27,500 in support of Dr. Milton W. White s research in the Department of Internal Medicine at the School of Medicine. Dr. Robert P. Kelch gave $30, to the Kelch Family Endowed Scholarship in the Irvin D. Reid Honors College. The Kresge Foundation contributed $500,000 toward its pledge of $2 million for the Detroit Revitalization Fellows Program, $40,000 to the University Press, $35,000 to WDET Public Radio, and $35,000 to the University Theatre Season. Rita L. Margherio gave $150,000 toward a pledge of $1 million to the Richard J. Mazurek, M.D., Medical Education Commons in the School of Medicine. Raymond G. Mercier, M.D., donated $35,990 toward his pledge of $100,000 to the School of Medicine. John B. Pruchnicki gave $84, to the Law School Fund. Donald R. and Gail H. Rodzik contributed a combined gift of $25,000 in support of Henry W. Lim s research and development in the Department of Dermatology in the School of Medicine. Dr. A. Paul Schaap gave a total of $495, on his pledge of $1 million for the Chemistry Building Central Instrument Facility Renovation in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Lorraine M. Sheppard donated $80, to the School of Medicine. Farhad K. Shokoohi, M.D., gave $20,000 toward his pledge of $50,000 to the Richard J. Mazurek, M.D., Medical Education Commons and $15,000 toward his pledge of $125,000 to the Shokoohi Family Endowed Medical Student Scholarship in Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine. The Thomas Foundation contributed $26,500 in support of Renu Kowluru s research in Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine. Menthele Waller gave $25,000 to establish the John B. Waller, Jr. and Menthele (Mikki) Waller Endowed Student Achievement Award for Masters of Public Health (MPH) Students.

5 5 The Wayne State University Alumni Association contributed $937,003 toward its pledge of $1 million for the Alumni Association Endowed Fund in Support of Alumni Programs. The Flip Wilson Scholarship Fund Trust gave $36, to the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts. PLEDGES AND PLANNED GIFTS Carol Jonson has made an additional bequest of $450,000 to support the English Department in the College of Liberal Arts, the University Libraries Special Collections and Rare Book Room, and sculpture and the Arts Center at Wayne State University. Dr. Silverenia Q. Kanoyton has pledged $25,000 for research and development in the College of Education. John S. Lam, M.D., has pledged $25,000 to establish the Dr. John Stephen and Judy Lam Endowed Scholarship in the School of Medicine. Janice and Barbara Lebiecki have bequeathed $1 million to the School of Medicine to establish the Eugene Family Endowed Fund in support of scholarly achievement in the field of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience. Laura V. Livingston has pledged $25,000 to establish the Dr. and Mrs. Walter C. Livingston Endowed Scholarship in the School of Medicine. John R. Manis, M.D., has pledged $25,000 to establish the John R. Manis, M.D. and Arpie Manis Endowed Scholarship in the School of Medicine. Dr. Michael Stoltenberg has established a $25,000 life insurance policy to create the Dr. Mike Stoltenberg Endowed Scholarship Fund in Athletics. Peter P. Wong, M.D., has pledged $25,000 to the School of Medicine.
