3 University of Turku Graduate School - UTUGS General: Established 1st of August, 2011 Consists of 16 doctoral programmes, which cover all disciplines and doctoral candidates of the University of Turku doctoral candidates in 2016 (incl. part-time doctoral candidates) doctoral degrees in 2016 Director professor Pirjo Nuutila

8 UTUGS funding 1) UTUGS-funded doctoral training positions: Applications submitted to UTUGS Doctoral Programmes one can apply for a) the right to pursue a doctoral degree at UTU (2 calls/year) b) UTUGS-funded doctoral training position (1 call/year; next call in the Fall 2017) Selection of UTUGS Doctoral Candidates to the doctoral programmes and funded doctoral training positions is based on the evaluation by the doctoral programmes. Decisions concerning the right to pursue a doctoral degree are made by Faculty, which issues the doctoral degrees.

9 UTUGS funding 2) UTUGS funding to the Doctoral Programmes: Funding for the operations of the Doctoral Programme -> Doctoral Programmes organize different courses, seminars -> Grants for travelling, finalization of the thesis. Coordination support -> Every doctoral programme has a part-time coordinator

10 UTUGS activities Examples of UTUGS courses on transferable skills (most courses in English): Academic Presentation Skills Academic Writing Philosophy of Science Research Ethics Entrepreneurship for Research Professionals Pedagogics Copyrights and Industrial Property Rights Popularization of Science Information Resources and Tools for Research Substance-specific formal training provided by the faculties In addition, activities such as 1st article language checking service

11 UTUGS activities Training Programme for Supervisors organized in cooperation by UTUGS, Unit for Human Resources Development and Unit for Educational Development.

12 UTUGS activities: Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition Spring 2017, University of Turku organized a Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, in which doctoral candidates introduce their research to the public as interestingly as possible in three minutes. The presentations were held in English. The winner of the University of Turku final participated in a joint competition organized by the Coimbra Group.

13 Activities of doctoral programmes Progress report via Saimi system in January. Launched fall Doctoral Programmes attended, over 1200 doctoral candidates reported their progress. Career and Review Discussions in March Launched spring Support for career planning and career guidance is new focus area of doctoral education. Annual meeting of doctoral programme. Training and courses organized by doctoral programmes.

16 Cotutelle agreement promoting international collaboration The doctoral degree is pursued at the two universities with a supervisor from both university Agreement on joint supervision based on rules and regulations of two universities Distribution of work Financial responsibilities Coursework requirements Contents and assessment of the thesis Awarding the degree IPR and publication rights Individual agreements for each doctoral candidate End product: One thesis, two degrees (one from each university)
