6 Charlton desaussure, M.D. Omnes Recte Iuvare Society Award Established in 2008, the desaussure Medal of the ORI Society is awarded to a member of the graduating class who best exemplifies the compassion, caring, humanity and excellence which for centuries has defined the art of medicine. The physician in whose honor the medal is named practiced medicine in Charleston from 1950 to Over those four decades, Dr. desaussure combined a private practice in internal medicine with a teaching career at the Medical University. As a lecturer in Hematology from 1950 to 1965, he taught several generations of MUSC students. Upon his retirement, the Medical University in 1992 named Dr. desaussure Professor Emeritus of Medicine. A 1942 graduate of Princeton and a 1945 graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. desaussure brought to his patients and his students the Socratic method for which each of those institutions is well-known. In an age before the technology which assists us so greatly today, the ability of physicians to fully understand and empathize with patients was critical to a diagnosis. Today s physicians benefit from tremendous tangible resources as well as the intangible methods of a previous generation. Dr. desaussure, from the classroom to the examining room, epitomized each of these approaches to both the art and the science of medicine, as did many physicians of his and earlier generations. It is for this reason, and to honor the many others who also brought such compassion and care to the profession of healing, that this medal honoring a graduate who exemplifies these same qualities bears the name of Charlton desaussure, M.D. William F. Wright Charles Pinckney Darby, Jr. Award This award is given to a student who is planning a career in pediatrics and who, as a third year student on their Pediatric rotation, demonstrated superb clinical skills and character traits of judgment, concerned care and compassion for children and their families. Elizabeth M. White William H. Lee Award This award is presented to the student who performed in a noteworthy fashion in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Elizabeth A. Gordon Glasgow-Rubin Certificates of Commendation These certificates are given by the American Medical Women s Association to women of achievement. Names are listed alphabetically. Kara S.
