6 Commencement Speaker Mae Lipscomb Rodney is a product of the North Carolina higher education system. She completed graduate programs in Library Science at North Carolina Central University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was the first African American to graduate in 1986 from Chapel Hill with a PhD in Library Science. Rodney s entire professional career has been in academic libraries, first at North Carolina Central University in a variety of positions between 1967 and 1983, and then at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) as library director from July 1983 to June It is there that she acquired the title of change agent. Library services at WSSU have transitioned from typewriters to a totally wireless environment; from a small box building to a tri-level facility that is open and technology infused. Student-driven services have been the focus since it became important to have what they need to keep students entering the building. A dream fulfilled is writing several short plays and seeing them transformed into live productions. The plays include Zelda is Dead, Black Diamonds and India s Story. In addition, Rodney has compiled multiple biographies, assisted by the library staff who transformed them into video biographies. The most comprehensive was the biography of her late husband, Cedric S. Rodney, which was compiled to commemorate his retirement from active ministry. In November 2010 the WSSU Friends of the Library celebrated its 25th Anniversary. The commemoration included the publication of Friends Inviting Friends: 25 Years of Friend-Raising. The WSSU Friends of the Library was formed by Rodney with the assistance of WSSU alumni, staff, faculty and friends to supplement the state-awarded budget. Through the various sponsored activities, along with the community s generosity, the library endowment is presently at a quarter of a million dollars. At least ten library employees (either student workers or full-time) have acquired their master s degree in Library Science. Two individuals hired by Rodney have moved into administrative positions in other academic libraries. The next milestone is to see one or two of these individuals acquire their PhD in Library Science. Mae has served on national, state and local committees, including the Salem College and Academy Board of Trustees. She has also served as a consultant to academic libraries throughout the southeast.
