5 INTRODUCTION Prepared by Yale s Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), the Fall 2018 International Student Enrollment Report highlights key data points about the enrollment of Yale s international student population. In some instances, the data is compared with previous years which also represent Fall enrollments. Contrary to national trends, but consistent with our peer institutions, Yale s international student population continues to grow. If you have any questions about the data please contact OISS Director, Ann Kuhlman. Highlights of this year s report include: The Fall 2018 international student enrollment represents the largest international student enrollment in Yale s history, 2996 students from 123 countries (22.3% of Yale students). The international student enrollment has increased by 52.5% in the last decade. The fall 2018 enrollment represents a 4.4% increase over the fall of The total student enrollment increased by 3.4%. Only two of Yale s schools (Law and Drama) showed a small decrease in in their international student enrollments. The School of Art maintained its 2017 numbers and all other schools saw an increase in their international student enrollment. 18.5% increase (81 to 96) in the School of Architecture. 16.3% increase (86 to 100) in the School of Public Health 7.4% increase (350 to 376) increase in the School of Management, with the growth primarily in the one-year MA programs. The international student enrollment in the MBA program was down by 1.9% (5 students). 4.5% increase (1254 to 1310) in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, including a 3.5% increase in PhD students, a 9.7% in Masters students and a 4.8% in nondegree students. 4.4% (637 to 676) in Yale College with the number of students pursuing a bachelor s degree in science increasing by 17.9% over the previous year. This fall, students from China represent twothirds of the total increase in new international students (93 of 155 students). The number of students from China increased by 11.8% (786 to 879) from fall 2017; the number of students from China has increased by 53.1% in the past five years. The enrollment of students from Africa saw a jump over previous years with a total increase of 6% (the increase is reflected in the G&P numbers; the YC enrollment saw a small decline of 5% or 4 students.) Nigeria continues to send the largest number of students (35) from the African continent (more than doubled the number of students in the fall of 2015). The use of post-completion optional practical training (OPT) saw a 5% increase (from 609 to 640 including a jump from 117 to 205 students on STEM OPT, a 75% increase over fall 2017). 1.This report includes matriculated students in the fall 2018 semester, including non-degree students, who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. Of the 2841 total, 2464 hold F-1 student visas and 326 hold J-1 student visa. 2. A recent report from the from the Institute of International Education and the State Department found that new international student enrollments fell by 6.6 percent in the school year, the second consecutive year of declines. A separate, more limited IIE survey of schools suggests that the declines continued this fall, too. 3. International students in F or J status may remain in the U.S. under Yale s visa sponsorship after graduation for a period of practical training employment (12 for F-1 and up to 18 for J-1 students.) F-1 Students in a STEM field may extend, if the employment meets certain requirements, the OPT period for an additional 24 months (STEM OPT).
