2 Letter of Welcome Welcome to the NAD Symposium on Transgender People in sunny Santa Barbara. We are so delighted that you have chosen to lend your voice to this important discussion. Over the course of the next two days, we will gather as a group to discuss this topic with individuals from various disciplines. We hope to conduct an informative, biblically focused discussion, and it is our hope that this will lead us to a greater understanding of this population. Our main purpose will be to explore whether Adventists in North America have a shared understanding of this topic, and if so, may establish a basis for future discussion. We are committed to ensuring that our time together is productive and spiritually inspiring and we are praying that God will enlighten, inspire, and uplift our hearts and minds. Again, welcome. 4 Symposium Presenters Jana Boyd, Ph. D, MA, LMFT is the Director for the Loma Linda University Health Employee & Student Assistance Program. Prior to coming to LLUH, Dr. Boyd worked in a variety of non-profit mental health settings. Dr. Boyd received her professional training at Fuller Theological Seminar where she completed a Ph. D in Marriage and Family Therapy as well as an MA in Christian Leadership: Integrative Studies, most recently serving as the Clinical Director of Christian Counseling Service in Redlands, CA. G. Russell Seay Jr. is presently an Assistant Professor of Religion at Oakwood University in the School of Religion. Although his specialization is theology, ethics, and African American religious history; he teaches a wide range of courses on the School of Religion. He holds a Master of Arts in Religion from Andrews University, with a major emphasis in systematic theology. In 2008, Pastor Seay received his Ph. D in Religion from Vanderbilt University. His area of specialization is theological studies with minor concentrations in African American Religious History and Ethics. John Reeve, Assistant Professor of Church History Andrews University Steve Yeagley, Assistant VP for Student Life Andrews University Olive J. Hemmings is President of the Adventist Society for Religious Studies she is also a member of the International Board of Ministerial and Theological Education. In 1989 she earned an M.A. in New Testament and Biblical Languages from the SDA Theological Seminary at Andrews University, and a Ph. D in Theology, Ethics, and Culture from Claremont Graduate University in Her great passion for the mission is fueled by a strong sense of purpose, and sustained by the grace of God. Katia Reinert, Associate Health Ministries Director General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Todd McFarland, Associate General Counsel General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Nicholas Miller is full Professor of Church History at the Adventist Seminary at Andrews University. He has degrees in theology (B.A., Pacific Union College), Law (JD, Columbia University), and American Religious History (Ph. D, University of Notre Dame). He was lead editor and contributor to the book Homosexuality, Marriage, and the Church (Andrews University Press, 2012) and author of The Religious Roots of the First Amendment (Oxford University Press, 2012). He has taught for more than ten years in the area of church and state, the rise of religious liberty, and modern church history. 5 Symposium Presenters Chris Oberg, serves as lead Pastor of the La Sierra University Church. Her primary responsibilities at LSUC are Preaching/Teaching Ministry, Crisis Visitation, Strategic Visioning, and Leadership Development. Daniel R. Jackson, President G. Alexander Bryant, Executive Secretary Kerby Oberg is the professor of Pathology and Human Anatomy in the School of Medicine at Loma Linda University. As a Pediatric Pathologist, his practice emphasizes congenital anomalies and his laboratory focuses on the molecular basis for malformations. Mark Johnson, President SDA Church in Canada Debra Brill, Vice President Lamont Murdoch is a Professor of Medicine at Loma Linda University. He also supervises the Endocrinology Clinics at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and Riverside University Medical Center. Claudio Consuegra, Director of Family Ministries Alvin Kibble, Vice President Henry Lamberton is the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He holds academic appointments in the LLU School of Religion and in the Department of Psychiatry. He earned a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University and Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree from the Graduate School of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is a licensed psychologist and has a part-time clinical practice in the LLU Department of Psychiatry. 8 5

6 Resources Presentation Itinerary NAD Human Sexuality Statement on Transgenderism (November 2015) While the Seventh-day Adventist Church has formulated teachings on gender and sexuality that may have a bearing on issues related to transgenderism, the Church has not yet articulated an official position applying these teachings to the issue. The complex nature of transgenderism calls for further discussion before recommendations can be made for the Church.
